When eBay was running their 20% refurb coupon, I got this for $159. Might be worth waiting for anther 20% off coupon off if you're not in a hurry.

I have been looking for a deal on this since 2 weeks.
I saw this similar pricing last week on ebay for refurb.
Also saw on Ozbargain, they went for $198 for brand new few months ago, keeping the new model released already.
Agree with RetroMetro, this should drop in price further

    Amazon 3 months ago $198
    Ebay 3 months ago $189

  • The full price is $199, so the SNSMD5 code should only discount $10.

  • What I don't like is the left one can't work independently.

    • +2

That's not true. I have a pair and regularly use only the left ear (right earbud in the charging case).

      • Correct. Sony upgraded the firmware to allow for this

    • Yes it can. Upgrade the firmware. I do all the time.

  • Rtings says the Soundcore Space A40 which can be had for half of this are better.

    • A40 noise cancelling sucks if it matters to you.

      • Rtings says the A40 have way better ANC than the XM4s?

        • You wonder who gave the ratings but I can assure you that was my own real expereince as I own a pair. Other than the useless ANC, everything else is good in particular the battery life. That's why I said in my comment if ANC is not a major factor, you can consider buying this.

I just got one today. I have to say the ANC isn't the best but it's not a biggie for what I need.
The plus with A40 is multipoint connection, good call quality in office environment and value for money less than $100.Just my 2cents.

    Man I LOVE these earphones.

I've had the priveledge of trying a lot of earphones, from really cheap but good Chinese IEM manufacturers to custom One Off manufacturers for custom molded units. I'd pay full price for these again if I HAD to. These sit in such a place where you get fairly close to the best of a lot of things, and cumulatively I think it makes it the best overall earphones I'd recommended to anyone and everyone.

No ANC to Sound Quality/Performance ratio comes close. Every other IEM involves some sort of a sacrifice.

I always come back to these. The only negative thing about these are that they are slightly bulky, and you should use foam tips for the best experience which are consumables that should be replaced every 3-4 months. They protrude out a fair bit, and it makes it not as ideal to sleep in.. But nothing comes close to how good the ANC is, and the effect it has on Audio Quality when you need that ANC.

If you listen to music on the go or outside or anywhere where it's busy and loud, or even if you have quiet humms and whizzing in the distance at home… and you close your eyes.. these feel like you're in a sensory depravation chamber with nothing but the music.

    • Sony Refurbishments can be either really good or really bad. I've seen little inbetween, but for the most part it's worth noting that the times things have been bad are a very small fraction given the sheer volume of refurbished units they sell VS the amount of complaints made publicly across the internet.

This is a great price for a great pair of earphones, so just pay with PayPal and don't let the outliers worry you.

Glad you are happy with yours but I had to return mine….. twice. The ANC was almost useless and the comfort for extended use was terrible. Sound quality is fantastic, but if you can't use the ANC and they hurt your ears, then they are not worth the price.

      • +1

If you're not using a core feature of any product then they're probably not worth their price =/

I had the xm3 and while the ANC want "almost useless" it was decidedly average. Took the edge off most sounds, but they were absolutely still there.

        • +2

the XM3's ANC really depends on how tight the buds sit inside the earhole. Any looseness and it's very ineffective.

I myself work near a school, and the sounds from the school during the day is annoying but the ANC almost completely cuts it out.

      • I have to ask, how good was the seal on your eartips? I agree some of the tips definitely hurt my ears initially, and took some time to find the right configuration.

The ANC is 100% dependent on the seal you get, you really need to use the foam tips, and the correct size, the silicone just won't work.

In recent sony now has a fitment and sound leak tester in the app as its such a critical feature.

        • I used the seal tester on the app and it was supposed to be all good, but I could still hear a lot of unwanted sounds like traffic noise and birds and dogs with ANC on. Also wind noise was terrible with ANC on and jogging was terrible due the amplified thump with every foot strike. These are known problems, check the forums.

          • @billy_bob: Yeah I've seen people report similar things. Worth noting the app tester isn't the be all result to go off. If you're hearing traffic that doesn't seem like it's sealed.

It's difficult for me to chalk up to the unit since every experience I've personally had with people telling me that in person has been changed by using foam tips or aftermarket foam tips in extreme cases. People have different ear canal structures and unfortunately it's difficult to find a perfect seal without trial and error (unless you get custom moulds)

I've no doubt there are some faulty units, but from my experience it's usually been fitment issues, it's particularly bizzare if you've returned multiple units and had the same experience…

Have you had similar issues with other anc earphones or found better anc in other earphones?

            • @SmoothCactus: I was lucky enough to get a full refund after returning 2 sets, but yeah, not sure if my issues were due to being refurbs or these earbuds are just not right for me. It's a shame really because the sound quality was great.

    • Hey there, appreciate the great write up! Can you pls say which foam tips you would recommend for this?

  • 2 out of 2 sets I have purchased have intermittent noise issues.

    • Exactly same issue with mine, XM5!

  • Don't buy this refurbished stuff, I got an XM5 which was broken out of the box. Zero quality control. There were tape marks on the cups. Basically, a gamble lol

  • And don't forget, poor after sales support if Sony :D it's a trap!
