FWIW, new GoPros are usually announced in September.

    • Hinted at 1" sensor.. Worried that will just make them hot pillows and overheat.. who knows.. https://www.pocket-lint.com/gopro-hero-12-leak-1-inch-sensor…
DJI Action 4 obviously the other option.

      • Yeah no firm view of whether the 1" sensor is legit or not. If it is, and they retain or improve on current tech specs that would be a big improvement. Alternate story could be that there are two models and the 1" sensor has reduced specs because of the bigger sensor.

        • It is not 1" and confirmed by trusted leaker.

          • @nadan: 1" sensor will ruin how everyone uses their gopro where it doesn't need to focus.

      • -2

yeah but none of these hold a candle with the go pro max or the instra360 X3 both 360 cams I think you can capture so much more and change every view angle in post its like having serveral cameras at your disposal in one. The potential for action shots is so much higher than 180 degree camera with the quality upgrades now on the new 360 cameras its just insane.

        • Much different use cases buddy. Also, by the time you export what you want to use from a 360 camera, the quality is much much lower. Both are great cameras though

          • @RickyBaker: it would be nice if they did do RAW formats that you can just open in final cut.

        • 360 cameras aren't very useful, notice how most people don't use them?

Poor quality picture, especially in low light, poor colours, poor bitrate. The field of view is too wide so everything looks weir and you have to hold out the camera with a big stick which isn't practical in many situations.

          • +1

@samfisher5986: canon 50Ds aren't used by most people doesn't mean they're not good. 360 cameras have so many angles in one shot you can have so many shots in post. imagine having 5 or more cameras at the same time in 1 single camera in real time.

            • @kungfuman: I don't disagree and yes it can work in specific situations but most of the time you know what you want to shoot, and you would prefer quality and a realistic field of view.

360 cameras are great when you are unable to point it at the action correctly and can hold a big stick out in front of you for long periods of time.. how many times does that apply?

$506.30 with ebay plus code: AUGG17

  • I was only looking at buying one tonight. Thanks so much!

    • +4

      Why tonight?

      • GoPro and JB both have "sales".

      • +12

        Bedroom adventures with the wife.

        • Lol

        • +4

No that's an Insta360 Go. Anyone with experience would know that.

  • +24

I've had it with gopros, unreliable, keeps dying and pretend to be recording but when you check footage, nothing… I've switched all my gear to insta360 and DJI now.

    • +2

Why so many up votes is it a once off lemon or common lemon? This is the first time I heard of this issue.

      • -1

Exactly, thats not a common issue with GoPros…

      • +2

I've had issues with mine in the past doing the same - randomly stopping recording.

      • +3

GoPro cameras are notorious for randomly freezing and losing files, though according to this review the Hero 11 is much more reliable: https://youtu.be/uvY7VQPt-_M

My HERO8 has mostly been fine except when trying to use it in about -5 degree weather - it would die within seconds of turning on (apparently one has to warm it up first).

        • +11

I usually have to warm mine first by placing it in my underwear. I then take it out and whisper sweet things to it, and it’s good to go. 👍

          • @cnut: Lol

          • +1

@cnut: I would have thought that you "whisper sweet nothings into it's ear" BEFORE you put it in your underwear?…

If I'm wrong, I may have to completely rethink my marriage as, it seems, "I've been doing it wrong".

    • +3

My story with gopro is I bought a gopro 11 with 64gb sd. Gopro sent me a gopro10 with 32gb sd. After months of back and forth phone calls, I gave up and keep the 10, even though I paid for the 11.
The 10 I got is constantly overheating and completely stopped recording.

      • Use the metal cage to dissipate the heat

      • +2

        watt… that's crazy

        • Oh and I forgot to mention, I still have 100gb of footage waiting to be uploaded to their gopro+

      • +2

        this is unbelieveable.

    • +2

Same here. They're over priced, over hyped and total crap.

    • +2

I got this GoPro model as my first last December. I am not a videographer and definitely an amateur in regard to editing and filming. I bought an Insta360 for a 3-week trip in July and never touched my GoPro. Not even once. I haven't had any freezing issues, still not worth it and would go with the Insta360 any day.

      • yep they are a good camera. the instra 360

      • Exactly… insta360 rocks!

    • You have to upgrade your gopro hero 3

    • +1

its funny when I say a similar remark I get negs lol but yes 100% agree.

  • +2

    little heaters

my gopro is probably the least utility I've gotten out of $500 spent on electronics.
connection to the app has been a headache , it works better recently though.

just too much friction to use, battery drains quick and AV quality not amazing,
the form factor doesent justify it for me.

    • +1

Not with the gopro 11 and the new app.

Had been using my 11 really well. Battery wise its insane. I only
need extra battery for half day of using it.

  • +1

I also have the GoPro 11. Its been brilliant, never had a freeze up or overheat. I have done quite a lot a footage, including some rough action vids. It has great picture stabilization . I purchased mine direct from GoPro as with the GoPro Membership thing ( A$60ish a year, I think ) there are huge discounts on the purchase price. Theres also unlimited uploads to their site storage for your vids plus a quite good editing app for your phone. Of extra interest is the camera insurance that comes with the subscription, basically covers everything !! The other thing is the amazing amount of third party addons for GoPros. ( On your favorite Ali-E site ) I have multiple cases, selfie sticks, adaptors, lens, batteries, chargers etc

    • So it took go pro 11 tries before getting it right?

      • Don't worry mate. A lot better than trying hard DJI action cam.

  • yeah I am all for these and I like go pros but I really want there 360 cam to be sale :D the go pro max.

  • +2

All the overheating and locking up appears to only be a 4k. Mine has been absolutely rock solid but I rarely shoot at 4k. 1440p/ 120fps FTW

    • I shoot 1080p @ 60fps and the hero8 overheated and died…

Won't turn on and only gives me red light of death.

      • I'm pretty sure we're talking about the 11. My 7 never had any overheating issues but would get the lockup occasionally. Once at 20m underwater (not fun)

  • I've had the Gopro Hero2, Hero 5 Black, Hero 7 black, Hero9 Black and to be honest the earlier models were waaaaaaaaay more reliable. It seems the more they tried to cram into the camera the less it worked. The Hero9 Black is useless.

I race motorcycles as a hobby and I can't even count the amount of time it froze the time it took to go from the garage exit the pit exit. We're talking less than 20s! Some times it will stay on a bit longer… say, 3-4 laps but it never recorded one full race to I gave up. Using it for other stuff seems a 'bit better' but it will still occasionally freeze/record sound only/corrupt a brand new memory card/etc.

I have the gopro subscription so I could just return it and pay some extra for a newer model but I can't say I trust it will work any better.
