  • Pardon my ignorance - Is this a Raspberry PI competitor?

    • Similar, except Raspberry Pi doesn't run Android natively. There are some hardware differences (RP uses a memory card for storage, etc), but performs a similar function. Interesting to see how this will go when XBMC is finally released for Android.

      • xbmc has already been released on android.

        http://xbmc.org/theuni/2012/07/13/xbmc-for-android/

        • There are issues with mali400 hardware video decoding. At present xbmc can only software decode on this (i think)
EDIT sorry i think the problem is on the allwinner SoC not the RK3066.

        • No, it hasn't. It's being developed, and there is source code which you can build if you're really motivated. It's not in the Play store, and XBMC only linked to the source code. If you've got a release, I'd be really interested in getting it.

        • No, you are correct. Only AmLogic 8726 SoCs currently have hardware decoding within XBMC. A10, RK3065/3066, Tegra3 etc. do not. There is a patch available for those building their own XBMC APKs that allows XBMC to launch MXPlayer to play video (hardware decoded), but this is not natively decoding within XBMC.

Not really a RPi competitor. The RPi only uses ~800mA at 5V = ~4 Watts, so it can be powered by most USB ports, such as the "PVR" port on your TV. This unit requires a separate power supply by the looks of it, using "max. power: 30W" according to the spec. The ventilated case certainly suggests it will be chewing through power!

Also the RPi model B (the only one currently available) has an ethernet port, which this unit lacks. WiFi only for this unit.

      • Most USB2 ports are limited to 500mA; I'd guess this includes most of the USB ports on TV sets.

Something is up though, this says presumably refering to the wall wart):

"Power 90-230V,50/60Hz input, max. power: 30W, Output: 5V/2A"

5Vx2A = 10W, so I don't know where the 30W happens. Either way, a lot more than I want to be sucking out of a standard USB port (even though the charger is a mini-use plug).

        • +6

You have things the wrong way around, there is no current limiting on USB ports in any of the PCs I have seen. There is usually a resettable fuse (a polyswitch or PTC thermistor), and often there is one fuse shared between two USB ports.

The USB2 standard specifies that ports must be able to provide 500mA if required by the device, and standard USB2 devices aren't supposed to draw more than 500mA. However, most (perhaps all) USB-powered hard drives draw 700-800mA, and have no problems on the vast majority of computers. This is why hard drive manufacturers offer the "optional extra" Y-cable, so the hard drive can draw power from two USB ports, on PCs that can't supply that much through a single USB port.

It is possible this is different on laptop computers, which have limited power supplies. On desktop PCs, there is no power limitation other than the resettable fuse, which is obviously higher than the 700mA required for a portable hard drive. TV sets would also be designed for portable hard drives.

The USB3 standard has increased the available current to 900mA, on the request of hard-drive manufacturers. This in not a maximum limitation, it means the port must be able to provide at least 900mA if the attached USB device needs that much.

In the specs, the "Output 5V/2A" is just that: how much power the Android box can OUTPUT to attached USB devices. So of the maximum 30W power input, up to 20W is used by the Android box itself.

    bought, ask questions later.

  • well done sirs, this is what i call a bargain

  • According to the internet the Mali400 CPU can decode 1080p rather easily so this could be a good HTPC solution once XBMC for Android gets more love.

    • +1

Perhaps, but with no wired connection, you're stuck with occasional streaming drop-outs. Maybe something like the $50 Cubieboard would do nicely.

      • Oh damn, didn't even think to check for a wired connection. Take things like that for granted these days..

Streaming media over wireless is not very good. Very glad I didn't order one.

        • +1

Streaming media over wireless is not very good.

Not sure what wireless you're using, but I can send 1080p to all of my devices without any issues at all….

        • Likewise i stream 1080P flawlessly over 802.11n.

  • not directly.Pi is can be modded . this mainly turns tv into a "smart" tv

  • does this has the mk802ii Rikomagic enhancement ?

ie Powerprotect ic and enhance wireless ?

  • +1

RK3066 is probably the best chipset in these cheap china devices. Mali 400 gpu will give you good performance in games. Not bad at all.

  • I see it has a USB host port - wonder if it supports USB hard drives. Otherwise streaming 1080p over wireless is not exactly ideal.

    • 1080p over wireless ..

.. isn't going to be the problem. The decoding of it once it's on the device is.

As mentioned above, hardware decoding should work in XBMC, but I'd like confirmation if anyone can find it.

      • +1

No, it does not currently. Only on the AmLogic 8726.

  • so, Rikomagic or UG 802 ?

    raw power -> UG802 - A9 cortex
    protection -> RK

  • +5

Excuse my ignorance, but does it come with some sort of remote? How is it controlled?

    • +1

You have to use a usb keyboard and mouse or this remote: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-arrival-2-4G-Mini-Handhel…

    • good question. I don't see mention of an ir receiver, nor any mention of bluetooth. so it would likely require a usb keyboard/mouse, and/or to be controlled by another android device on the same network wifi. but that's just a guess.

    • +3

It uses a newly developed prototype form of mind to computer interface.

    • There are ~50 keyboards with touchpads like Logitech k400 (it has it's own wireless tech using an included USB reciever, so should be fine).

    • So I can plug my Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse into it?
Would it handle a USB hub?

      • Most likely, i've got an Android tablet which has USB on the go, and it can handle a usb hub.

  • Anyone know if you can install a version of linux on this? Yes, I know android is linux

  • Bewdy. Cables provided and everyfink. Really looking forward to this arriving. : )

  • This looks good at a good price but the lack of custom remote makes it less desirable for me.

IF no remote turns you on check out the Equiso Smart TV that is shipping this month as it has a qwerty keyboard and a remote that seems very usable.

  • As for android mini pc,this wireless keyboard is the most popular.

  • Looks good.

Seems to run XBMC well going by this Youtube video:

  • this little beast generates a lot of heat when running.

is there enough ventolation with this model ?

  • +1

The special hive design(you can see there are many little holes on the surface of the device)makes it run smoothly but generating less heat.

    • +2

they are called ventilation holes and just means the the RK3066 and RTL8188 ICs can run a bit cooler

      • +8

'hive design to generate less heat' sounds cooler

        • +6

I see what you did there :P

  • Would this run as a plex client?

  • does android tv support live streaming links? just trying to exactly pinpoint the use of android tv. sorry if its a silly question.

  • +1

would an iPhone work as a remote for this thing?

  • This would be awesome for a car PC if it can interface with a touch screen. Anyone have any ideas?

    • Why not use an android tablet since you get the touch screen? Many folks on mp3car forums have used 7" tablets like the Galaxy Tab for in dash solutions.

      • Because you can get Lilliput screens which fit directly into DIN slots

  • Ordered. Thanks for the deal. Should be an interesting new toy to play with!

  • +4

Buyers beware, last time they took more than 2 months to send my MK802. Even then they sent me a European power adapter.

By the time item reaches to you, it will be generations older…

  • +2

Can someone please enlighten me as to what this gadget actually does. It appears to be like an Android phone but with higher performance and connectivity to a computer monitor ot TV - but I still don't know! :) Searching the web finds threads where everyone appears to know what it does already!

    • +1

It's essentially an Android device without a screen. You can hook it up to whatever you want, and have access to everything that an Android device would.

Most obvious usage for something like this is as a media player, considering it has HDMI output.

Read my posts in above thread… its a mini PC without a screen…

    • It's not a phone.

    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Newest-UG802-Dual-Core-Androi…

$68 from Aliexpress good shipping with them took just over a week or two for my mk802

      • shipping US $7.37. Ends up being ~$10 more expensive.
      • +1

I just changed the link this one has free shipping

        • Ahh.. Excellent!

    • Ali dont accept Paypal?! - the sellers there only have 9 and 4 ratings, didnt fill me with confidence. Have done my purchase through Lightake
      Thanks OP!

  • +1

Guys….in point form, please list what can be done with this device. Make me want one :-)

    • +15

Simple, Its a computer that connects to your TV to use as a monitor, the OS is Android and all you need with this is a usb keyboard and mouse.

      • Play Games.
      • Download all the Android Apps.
      • Watch Porn in HD.
      • Use Google Maps in HD and play I spy.
      • Drive a car with the accelerometer on your HD TV.
      • XMBC, Media server, NAS, RAID, Torrent, Rapidshare, Megaupload…errr yea sry
      • AND Finally, try and fool your friends that your TV is now FULLY Touch screen.*

-* I won't hold myself responsible for holes in your TV, dead pixels or any TV related injuries.
-* Warning NOT A SEX TOY.

      • Thanks. I want one!!

      • Slight correction: as there is only a single USB port on this device, you will need a hub to plug in both keyboard AND mouse. Or you could use one of the Logitech wireless solutions, which let you use a single "universal" receiver (hence a single USB port) for both devices. Note that not all Logitech keyboards and mice are compatible with the "universal" receivers.

Or you could use a wired keyboard with a built-in hub, but those are somewhat rare.

    • Its a cheap Android / Ubuntu computer

  • Can you use the normal Android interface instead of what is provided - that being the ugly blue screen.

  • Would be possible to use Skype via an USB Webcam?

  • +3

Rep, OK I am sold on getting one but can you confirm how long this is going to take for delivery, otherwise I'd better follow "Kaboda's" link and get from Aliexpress as not going to wait 2 months like "Ozdeals" above.

  • Yeah same here. Want to get one but need OP to confirm it will be dispatched ASAP. Also remote too expensive! I can get it on ebay for $30 delivered so best to buy separately unless they pricematch.

  • Does any one know how is it in comparison to rikomagic MK802ii? I was thinking of buying Rikomagic but havent seen this one before.

  • Rikomagic mk802 & mk802 ii are single core this one dual.
FYI I have the raspberry pi & running Raspbmc, runs well. Chokes on 10gb+ 1080p mkv through the network( but I'm sure it's my network). Runs 1080p mkv through USB. Had to buy a case and class 6 sd card. Going to use for projects in the future. But yeah most consumers want a machine that's ready to rock right out of the box. Ubuntu is already running on the mk802( version 1). These little android monsters are the ticket.

  • +1

Check this pretty good video put together by this guy.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKNPnBE-ouI&feature=youtube_g…

    There's a part 2 as well.

  • +3

will his work with something like a Benq GL2450HM 24"W LED G-BLACK/DVI/HDMI/SPK ? under $300 for a android computer with moniter, seems great for parents

    • Can't see why not….it is meant for this.

  • why wouldn't it??

  • Does it include a HDMI extension cable like most of the MK802II on ebay?

  • did you check the PHOTOS or 'package included' specs? CLEARLY posted on the website.

  • The mk802 has a hdmi male output and has female to male adapter cable( not long though). Yeah it does too do they say."1x hdmi cable" whether it's a female to male I dunno.

  • +1

Can this access an external HDD that is connected to the router on a home network? (I have bought a similar device from jaycar and was unable to) Jailbroken apple tv2 has no issues.

  • -3

Is it possible to control it from iPad or iPhone (as a remote)

  • -2

Does it have 2 usb ports? For attaching a keypad and a mouse, there should be two at least.

  • +6

Note to self - Do not come here in the future for credible feedback (Judging from the dumb questions people keep asking). Has anyone even bothered to READ the specs and CHECK the images before posting stupid questions?? or is that simply too hard.

  • -1

Does anyone know if this or any tv units have custom firmware or support from xda? Would be nice to get jelly bean.

    • Doesn't seem like too many posts on XDA about this model.

I can't even find when it was released.

      • Not sure if it would accept the firmware designed for MK802…but there is a dedicated website to support that device..

        Rikomagic.co.uk

  • +1

I copied this from an email i got from Lightake. : )

For your convenience, you can view, track, and edit orders 48 hours a day through
    Lightake Order Tracking.

  • Loll all these questions.. look at the site check it out. Google, YouTube it etc..

  • Got one for same price last week.

Does anyone know if you can use an App on an Android phone to control (mouse/keyboard function) the UG802 like you can for the MK802 II?
