Sony E 11mm F1.8 Lens $509 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

80

(Update 30/08) Seems JB has dropped the price even further and is now an absolute cracker deal at $509.

On sale is one of Sony's best wide angle APSC lenses for Sony E, FF equivalent of 16.5mm on crop sensors. Sony Au lists for $699 and next cheapest seems to be $636 at Digi.

Despite being built like a toy and weighing less than a pack of Winnie blues, the image quality and value is superb. Wide open this lens presents excellent contrast, sharpness and practially no CA. A slight fall-off towards the edges but still little to no CA and minimal vignetting compared to other UWA primes. Review

For those on FF the sensor coverage is still quite good. According to this it requires roughly a 1.32x crop to remove vignetting, giving a FOV of ~14.5mm.

(Update) Have tested this lens on FF and can confirm that in full width 16:9 it requires only a ~1.25x crop to virtually remove all vignetting (with lens corrections on). This effectively makes it a 14mm 1.8 lens for $509, quite the result. For critical resolution and IQ you may want to stick with it's intended use, but for vertical social media content this lens is a no-brainer on FF given the performance.

  • Yeah currently looking for a decent lens for my zv-e10 that can capture low light better without weighing too much. This one's probs more than I'm willing to spend though.

    • You'll find the Sigma 16mm 1.4 for a bit cheaper. However if you're concerned with weight the Sigma is more than double, 180g vs 405g. If it's for more general purpose shooting the 16mm should be more versatile at a FF 24mm equiv.

      • It's for video, wasn't a fan of the weight of the 16mm but might consider the 30mm since its 265g, cheaper and should work for my purpose.

    • can't go wrong with SEL50F18F, SEL35F18F

      • 35 looked like a good option in terms of specs but just too pricey for my cheapness.

        • What focal length do you need exactly? A cheaper high quality prime that I would look at is probably the Sigma 30mm 1.4. You can get it on sale occasionally for around $350 when ebay has their 20% off sales at Digidirect, DCxpert etc.

          • @Dubious speculation: I'm pretty flexible as I'm trying to find one that can be useful in a variety of scenarios, probably like somewhere between 15mm-35mm with F1.4 - F2.0. Sigma 30mm 1.4 is top of my list right now since it's a good weight/cost balance.

  • Very limited stock at JB. Better get it price match at Sony Australia.
