What if my ABN is not making a profit? :D

    • +1

You can try and let us know. I don't have an ABN so I can't check.

      • +6

Every ozbargainer should have an ABN after the Lenovo credits deal last year

        • What was this exactly? Sounds good

          • +5

@Catsfan070911: Pretty sure it was an error- Lenovo gave out free credits to signed up members which could be redeemed for products.

Normies got $100 worth of credits, but if you had an ABN you got $200 worth of credits.

I told myself it was gonna get cancelled and I wouldn't believe it until the package was at my doorstep and whaddaya know, got a free $200 monitor.

            • @jaypee06: Ohh yes I remember this now, missed out myself as was too slow, but thats awesome haha. And I am a ABN holder now for Paypass and whatever other shafts I can manage :)

              • @Catsfan070911: I almost missed out - was browsing and couldn't think of what to get then remembered all the previous times I'd missed out on deals so just went for the monitor and checked out as fast as I could lol. I remember seeing the votes and comments just piling up and was thinking shiiiiit this is gonna get ozbargained fast, gotta be quick.

            • @jaypee06: Hello brother do you have a link to that post…is it still possible to do it now….I reckon I missed out on that lenovo deal….

not making profit is better than making a loss!

      • -5

not making a profit = making a loss

        • You're not a very good AI bot.

          • @spaceflight: You guys are weird
Learn basic accounting or just words in general

            • @ChatCPT: I know more than basic accounting and words in general.

What happens if you don't make a profit or make a loss?
I'll help you out, that's called breaking even. Your = doesn't work.

What happens when you're selling things for a profit, but business overheads result in an overall business loss.
You're still making a profit at some point, your = doesn't work again.

What happens when you make a profit but declare a tax loss using accounting methods?
Do you think the third of large Australian companies that pay no income tax are really not making a profit?

              • -1

@spaceflight: Wow. Really struggling there aren’t ya.

Post said not profiting is making a loss
Sure why don’t we take one definition of profit and apply it to another against loss? No, that logic would be ridiculous wouldn't it.

And who has to separately incorporate business overheads to incur a net loss. Like duh Business 101

While you're at it why don’t you check the definition of profit against individual customers? Specific items or business units? etc etc
                Way too contrived mate

    • +3

You have to be a registered not for profit organisation.

      • The question is how to do this…. :)

      • How does someone register for this?

        • +5

With great difficulty. Not to mention annual reporting and reviews.

      • @stephendt it was tongue in cheek :)

      • +1

Went through the process and it seems you have to be registered with ACNC

    • Wind up order sold separately

    • If your ABN makes no money, that's ok, MS will make profit from it (and you) either way.

  • Is it once off or annual sub?

    • +3

      once off for 10yrs

  • +1

I recently set this up for my school P&C - there are a few hoops to jump through, but I got to say it's all slick to set up now. It's been a while since I have done a clean 365 setup and it was all sorted in a couple of hours.

    • -3

Mind sharing the process please? Thanks mate.

      • +18

Yeah mind sharing on how to become a Office 365 Admin via an Ozbargain comment?

        • +2

First you have to start calling it Microsoft 365

    • Hey, I know it's an old post but I am looking at this for our P&C. I have applied so currently our application is pending a decision but I'm curious to know more about what you mean by 'few hoops to jump through'?

Are you referring to the process of getting the application approved or do you mean the technical side of setting up M365? I am familiar with the latter so there should be no issues on that end.

Got this for my church recently. It is for 10yrs once granted.

    • 10x free Microsoft 365 Business Premium (with own domain name email)
    • Annual free Azure credit (was about 2k)
    • Any additional licences required are discounted by around 75% (e.g. Business Standard comes down from $18.92/mo to $4.51/mo inc GST).

    • US$3K but they’re about to change it to $2K, and unlimited business basic accounts as far as I’ve seen. There are a few qualifying hoops as mentioned above but the NFP portal has some great pricing!

    • Hi,

I am interested for getting this for a church as well. How was the set up and how are you finding it?

When you say 10x, I am guessing it's because it renews every year, and not for 10x entities concurrently?

How did you go with applying? If I church has a charity certification/document, will it qualify for this offer?

  • Will it become non-free when the organisation starts making a profit?

    • +6

doesn't work that way - charities and NFPs make profit all the time - they just don't distribute to shareholders but keep as reserves for next year.

      • Unspent funds baby

        • After inflated salary and management fee/consulting fee to related parties of course

      • Like FIFA, worlds richest NFP
        $4 BILLION in cash reserves
        hmmmmm

  • Microsoft is almost free for several types of organization, for example, educational institutes, NFP, charity organisations etc.
    Nothing new here.

    • +3

      Was new for me

  • Would Local Gov qualify as NFP, I wouldn't think they are required to pay income tax?

    • Define local gov? (As in what sort of org within local gov)?

    • If they are income tax exempt then they are eligible for this.

    • Local government as in a local government council. They are definitely NFP as dont pay income tax but problem is that the only option for Registration type with Microsoft is "ACNC". I called ACNC and they only register charities even though they call themselves Australian Charities 'AND' Not for Profits Commission

Anyway to get a MS work account?

    • +2

MS Works hasn't been available for over 10 years now…
      https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/microso…

You need to use MS Office or M365 :-)

      • -1

My bad I mean a work account that can be used for some MS products like Power BI that are not included in MS365

        • +1

Microsoft 365 Nonprofit E5 exists. You may have to actually talk to a rep to get it though; not sure.

  • Thanks OP

  • +1

Microsoft still selling basic after all these years.

    10 PRINT hello world
    20 RUN

    • +1

640kB RAM ought to be enough for this one.

I feel like Google Workspace for Nonprofits is a better alternative for smaller NFPs. Set it up a few years ago for a local charity, seems to work much better considering the technical literacy of the main stakeholders. This is super dope though for the free Azure credits, but if you don't need AD or managed computers and are considering this, check out the Google offering too. (I wonder if you can have both…)

  • Is this different to the one done through ConnectingUp?

If it’s that one the fine print is that while it’s free from Microsoft, CU charge $1.50 per account per month to cover their support costs and processes.

This has just been brought in over the last few months and kicks in at everyone’s next annual review.

Tell me I’m missing something - for our org it’s gone from $0 to $50/month. Still well worth it but I’d rather the price was zero…

  • As I mentioned in a reply above, problem is that the only option for Registration type with Microsoft application online is "ACNC". I called ACNC and they only register charities even though they call themselves Australian Charities 'AND' Not for Profits Commission

Anyone know a way around this for NFPs that aren't charities?
