Should prob put that its from Dick Smith in the title or post somewhere.

Also this is going to be no good for Telstra or Vodafone as it is not 850Mhz compatible.

Thanks. I thought the specs posted are fairly clear. Its ok on 2G for Telstra/Vodafone, just not 3G.

      • nebie learning more that we need 3g and 3g is 850mhz [only?] reading cnet to learn more.

      • I have one and I can use a Telstra SIM to make calls and send SMSs without any problem. I have another Virgin mobile SIM in it for surfing Internet.

  • tad on the slow side @ 650mhz

    • and the internal memory too :(

I got this for International travel around 2-3 months ago, the battery life just sucks !

It will last for almost a day of phone calls alone…, I've installed a custom rom to tweak its abilities…, apart from the Android bit everything else is average…, I should have bought the MOTOROLA EX226 ! :(

    • curious to know what custom rom you put in?

    • I wasn't even able to root the damn thing. I'd like to know too -What instructions did you use to root the phone?

The Android M18 and M15 are some of the most stable and attractive roms around, while it will still struggle despite the skeleton structure (i.e no excess apps and 120MB+ free capacity), the CPU being a decent Qualcomm MSM7227 @600-650Mhz~ is fairly snappy at first, once you start loading apps it becomes slow as sh*t…, overclocking it will make the phone too HOT to hold and the battery will die twice as quick, tweaking it any further than 800-1000Mhz will either burn your fingers or burst… lol

ROOT(Pretty certain this will work for both 2.3.5 & 2.3.6):

What instructions did you use to root the phone?

I find that the Vibrate function does the trick nicely. ~purrs~ ;P

    • A day of phone calls?? Most smart phones will not last more than a day with intermediate usage my friend

      • +1

My defy can last upto 4 days on one charge with Wifi, 3G and calls at intermittent intervals…

You need to tweak its usage patterns, adjust voltage and remove rubbish unwanted services, apps, etc

Do this ONCE, calibrate your battery and finally customize your battery mode, nightly, performance or saver… etc

    • I loaded a custom ROM with no bloat ware, uses SIM management to turn off one SIM when I don't use it. I also turn off wifi when I don't need it. It can last me almost 3 days.

      • yea sadly I always needed 2 SIMs one for data and the other for voice, so battery runs really quick especially when travelling… :(

I own this phone. I cannot recommend it even though it mostly works ok as a phone and is a handy 3G modem router. Haven't had battery issues, lasts similar time to other phones. Both its sims can be active simultaneously, and it is easy to control what connections each sim is making i.e. 3G and/or GSM. Screen is not good, insensitive to touch near the edge bezel. Crashes when bluetooth is on sometimes. Runs old Android 2.3 on 600MHz processor. Hasn't got enough memory for more than a handful of apps (512Mb ROM + 256Mb RAM). Navigation not good, too slow to get position fix. However with a prepaid mobile broadband sim in its second sim slot has saved me heaps on on excess data plan fees.

I agree it doesn't have much internal memory. I moved as many apps to the SD card as I can, but I still feel the squeeze. However, for the price that I paid, I'm still happy with the purchase. GPS locks pretty fast for me. I enabled both A-GPS and EPO assistance.

  • Have recently been looking into getting a dual sim mobile, and this was up the top of my list with a couple others of the ones i was most interested in. I'll probably pick one up on the weekend.

Anyone know if dse have them in different colors or just in black?

Also, some websites list it as being 14.4Mbps HSDPA, and some others claim it's only 7Mbps…can anyone verify which speed is the right one for this 918D phone?

    • Bought the phone.

It's not active dual sim. If you're using data/internet on sim 1 you will be unreachable on sim 2 if someone tries to call and they'll be given a message that the line is busy.

Also the download speed I'm pretty sure is not 14.4Mbps HSDPA. That's the speed of my acer liquid mt and the 918d is noticeably slower, so it's probably 7.2Mbps.
