This has been a good device mostly but Im looking forward to a more premium model eventually. Need to reboot this thing all the time.

Bring back the $55 deal then maybe.

  • Niche question…

How good is chromecast at dealing with sideloaded apps?

Primarily some of the Chinese apps to stream Chinese tv and Chinese app stores (shafa).

One of the issues is that controls go wonky with lots of sideloaded apps. So you kinda resort to using an air mouse to help click things.

I was kinda hoping for the shield TV pro price to drop more and get that, but do folks think Google Chromecast will be good enough?

    • More than good enough.
I use the fire stick and it's working smooth as silk

    ETA. F google.
    https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/google-tv-file-manager-pr…
adblink walks around the sht restrictions

    Orig:
I'm trying to copy my old kodi Settings onto this machine. IM having the problem where no app has permissions to enter the Android folder. And the Chromecast is also missing The app that allows you to give that permission. Is there any way around this?

  • what are the good feature to have chromecast for when you have lastest smart TV?
    Anybody could help?

    • Android 12 and portability to use on travels. Otherwise no point especially if your new smart tv is also android

  • Would something like this work to play movies from a USB?

    https://amzn.asia/d/9WXn6oX

  • Thanks for this deal.
I’m going to use this with this
deal I know the monitor is only 1080p but I’m going to use it as a photoframe and 4K will help if I ever wanted to upgrade.

  • Does anyone know if Google has hard coded their dns on this google tv as well!?

I have the first and ultra versions of the chromecast which were updated 2-3 years ago and Google’s dns servers were hardcoded which restricts use of smart dns proxy servers.

  • This with Stremio = Chef's kiss 💋

  • is this good for reolink cameras so you can view the cameras from any tv or monitor?

Or would amazon alexa be better. cheers in advance

    • I do this with 3 Reolink cams. I have to use the google home screen cast function from my Samsung phone though, so its not an app on the GTV or anything.
Never thought of trying to sideload the Reolink app to the GTV though, I'm fairly happy just viewing on phone so have not looked into that.

Was under $60 on Feb but the number of upvotes here is much more

  • Thanks OP! Stacked with the JB Perks and the Citi offer for an extra $20 off thanks to this thread :)

  • Bought these on launch and installed them on all my three TV's. Couldn't live without them and can't recommend them enough.

  • I have a 55” Aldi QLED purchased last year.
I can’t seem to figure out which tv to use to get CEC to work. Power, Volume, Sound.
Anyone suggest a tv setting it works with on Aldi tvs?

    • I don't know the aldi tv settings, but most TVs have a setting burried under the HDMI connectivity settings to enable CEC

      • Yeah “Braun” is not in the settings.
        Thanks though

  • I am going to London in a couple of weeks where I will be staying at a friend's unoccupied apartment. Part of the "deal" is that I fix up several of her IT problems:

    • WiFi extender to get signal into other rooms that have walls made of chicken wire coated in plaster, ie a perfect Faraday Cage. Needed to make the rest of the items in this list work. I will probably use UK purchased powerline networking for this.
    • Ring doorbell
    • Security camera
    • Connect to smart power and gas meters
    • Install Firestick or Google TV to replace TV antenna that has died and she can't get corporate body approval to replace cable.

I thought I would buy one or t'other here because they are much cheaper:

    https://www.currys.co.uk/tv-and-audio/digital-and-smart-tv/d…

The cheapest Firestick is GBP38.49 = AUD76.28 compared to AUD37 at OW.

    The cheapest GTV is GBP34.99 = AUD69.35

The HD GTV is £59.99 = AUD118.90 compared to $67 with this deal, minus whatever devious discounts you can wangle as described above.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't take one of these Oz purchased devices to UK, other than that the power supply will have a different plug which can be worked around with a cheap plug adapter, which may not be necessary if the TV USB port puts out enough power?

The dedicated buttons appear to be the same:

FS - Prime, Netflix, Disney, Amazon Music
    GTV - YouTube, Netflix

    • Of course this is all idle frugality. If we are getting 3 weeks of free accommodation worth say GBP200/night I can afford to buy gold-plated devices and still come out ahead.

But frugality always raises its ugly head.

Like when I was leaving from Southern Cross Station in MEL yesterday and with only a few minutes till departure I went to the info counter to find out why "they" had charged me $2.50 twice to take a train and tram from SX to Toorak Village the previous night. Their explanation was that when I had been in MEL a week earlier I hadn't touched off and the charge was pending.

Any good reason to use this vs the built-in WebOS on LG OLED? I understand that Google's interface may be faster, it has a better search capability and Google assistant (which I don't use for TV), but it means that there is an additional remote control especially when switching between FTA channels and GTV.

    • +1

Basically for what you've already said. Also, you can potentially not have to rely on a second remote beyond intial setup. The CEC capabilities should allow your tv remote to control the Chromecast interface relativity well.

      • Thanks! Then it looks like I may not really need it, looks like I'll just get it when LG stops supporting their WebOS for my C9. I already have an old Chromecast 4K for casting.

        • +1

I have a C9 also. I personally havent needed to use my Chomrecast once the WebOS app support expanded over the last couple of years (like having Binge etc). Can confirm that the remote works pretty quickly on the chromecast menus though. Also, I haven't found the C9's OS to be slow either.

  • I have got a 1080p TV and not sure which one to get at these prices: 4k or HD?
    What do you guys reckon?

    • +2

Definitely buy the 4k. You'll upgrade your TV in the future.

  • I ordered this and received it today. All was well and it looked brand new in box except for one minor thing. The quick start guide says to insert batteries into remote. I found that they were already in there. Not super weird so all good.

Plugged my chromecast in and there was no start up or set up - straight to the home screen but it was all in chinese, logged in to somebody elses google account. wtf… a lot more weird. Anyway, I just factory reset it and all is well.

    • +1

It must have been a returned device, previously bought by someone else.

  • +2

I went into JB HIFI last night and they are $69, asked him to do me a deal on the 4k version. Said he will knock $10 off it so got it for the same prices as the HD version.

soooooooo. Received the 4K version for $59

    • Thanks for the tip. Went on Live Chat and told them someone I know got it for $59 in-store. Told them I want to get that further discount too without having to go in-store.

Received the 4k version for $59.

      • I don't understand the "live chat" function. When you select it (during the advertised Live Chat hours) it just has you fill in a form and you then need to wait for a response in the same way as an email enquiry.

  • Does anyone there is a good prospect of this selling for less somewhere before Father's Day?

  • i have one tv wit this already but i want to buy more lol…
can i plug in to my 34" philiip monitor and make it become tv ? hmm but how to get free to air…. also not sure if the monitor has 2 hdmi (already used one hdmi)
