Samsung SA23950 23" 3D Computer Monitor w/Glasses for $298 at JB Hi-Fi

130

Cheapest on Static ice for the same model is $347 from MLN. Not sure if this is a specal or permanent price, however it appears to be in-store and online (The Knox store had quite a few in stock). Not a bad price if you are wanting a monitor with

23" 3D LED Monitor

Full HD 1920 x 1080 Resolution

2ms Reponse Rate

120hz

Mega DCR

HDMI, Display port, DVI-Duallink

2D - 3D Converting

3D Glasses

Although the resolution is a bit low for a modern day monitor, you would pay a lot more for a similar screen with a resolution bump. Unfortunately they don't seem to have the bigger 27" model, or the T27a950, which has a built in HDTV tuner and more ports.

this monitor is FANTASTIC, its also thinner than an iphone with thin bezels

      • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

        • Lol but look at more pictures of it, JV!! Somehow, in some way, that's sure to change your mind.

        • +4

Oh, I agree.. the Janome is ugly. I was being sarcastic up there. I found it a bit odd dude telling you to look at more pics of it, like that would suddenly change your mind and endear it to you.

        • different angles

like from the size showing how thin it is

Also the stand is necessary cause it converts 2d into 3d. gotta pack those chips somewhere

      • Does this sowing machine come with free string?

    • It looks fantastic in the flesh. Only disappointment is that my girlfriend won't be happy unless they make one with the stand on the other side so my 3 monitor rig (Laptop in the middle), remain symmetrical.

      • you only have 1 set of eyes …

        • +1

Which can quickly go from one screen to another. Essay in the middle, article I'm using as a resource on the left, maybe a video or my essay plan on the right, or another article if Im writing a paragraph that uses several ideas/viewpoints, or perhaps some lecture slides while i write notes to revise from. I could never go back to one monitor when it comes to serious studying.

        • ^ haha serious studying ;)

lol but seriously two monitors are the best!!

        • I'm not sure why that is funny?

    • +2

I agree with JV its horrid.

what an ugly sense of beauty…

    Have bought this model.

Note that the number is slightly wrong on JB's site - they have it as a SA23950, not the S23A950. The resolution on the 27" is the same as on the 23" - they're 1920x1080 screens. The big selling point on these is that they're 120Hz, and good at the price for a 120Hz monitor.

      • Doesn't bother me at all really - I don't look at stands ;)

        • -2

          I don't look at stands

that's the whole point. you shouldn't be noticing it, but because it's assymetrical, i reckon i'd find it hard not to notice…

    • I did notice the model number being slightly wrong both on their website and and in-store, debated calling attention to it in the OP.

Can you please tell me how it stacks up in the real world? What have you used it for? I plan on getting one for Xbox/PS3 and as a second screen for my laptop. I'm also interested in the claimed viewing angle of 170 degrees, as in the past using monitors for games I've been disappointed with the quality whilst having them on a slight angle

      • I've used it mostly for gaming off my desktop PC - DotA2, Saints Row the Third, GTA, Fallout New Vegas and Borderlands all look good on it. Bear in mind that there's no speakers on the screen, so you'll need something for audio for the consoles if you're using HDMI.

I'll check viewing angles for you when I get home, but I've had no problems with it in a 'on desk' environment.

do you know what the usual prices are for these?

  • +1

I have the 27" version and its amazing.

120hz makes both windows and gaming very very smooth.

    • How much did you pay?

      • +1
        • I downscaled my resolution on my ips monitor from 1440 to 1080 and my eyes started bleeding. Graphics was blocky like a console and text was just painful to read.

This is a rip off at $459 when you can get a 27" 1440 ips @90hz for $350.

        • It's a matter of preference. I find 1080 on a 27" screen to be difficult.

        • Chance of a link to the 27"? Is it one of the Catsleaps (Korean display, with seconds/A- panels), and if so, what's the warranty/repair time like on them?

        • lol im still using my 19" …

        • catleaps are not very good and require overclocking….

I wish people would stop saying these are the best…

        • catleaps are not very good and require overclocking…

Short of overclocking one, these are one of the best panels with only nec and Eizo topping them, thats if you have the spare change for it. Its the same panel used in acd's and dell u2711 (dell might have gotten the new revisions).

Apart from 120hz, whats so good about these monitors? Colours are so weak, viewing angles are horrible, pixel density is subpar. frames dont matter when it looks like your playing with the graphics all turned down. I can get the same quality of gameplay just by turning my resolution to 1080 and getting 80-90fps average

        • +1

I believe that the Catleaps use LG A- panels - ones that didn't meet QC criteria set by their clients, but are still functional (factory seconds). From what I can see on ebay, you can't return for dead pixels unless there are more than 15, and there is some risk of getting dust inside the glass screen (and the seller I saw wouldn't accept returns for dust).

The advantages of the Samsung are:

          • one of the cheaper 120Hz monitors available locally
          • local support for warranty claims (Samsung have repair centers in state capitals) and fast turnaround
          • good dead pixel warranty - they'll replace for a single dead pixel
          • reasonable pixel density, angles, and colours in the price range
          • good value at the JB Hi-Fi price (not at the launch RRP, though)

Also, you're kind of missing the point in your second paragraph - the screen you're using doesn't dictate whether you have to turn your graphics down, the GPU does. Catleaps are good screens IF you're prepared to risk using a factory second as your primary display - if you don't have a spare floating around, I'd advise against it.

  • I had a S27A950D before. The display is fantastic, colours very vibrant. The only thing i dislike is the glossy screen, basically a mirror in a bright room. You can see the shadows of everything behind you and its distracting. But when curtains are drawn, it really good.

    • Its only an issue if there is a lot of sunlight or you have your brightness low.

  • Do Samsung 120hz monitors still not support the NVidia 3d system?

    • AFAIK 3D doesn't even use drivers.

Its likely that Nvidia are not supporting this 3D monitor.

      • This doesn't support Nvidia 3D Vision - I believe it works with ATI's version but haven't tried. The 2D->3D is gimmicky, and the glasses provided don't work well over prescription lenses.

it looks like a sewing machine.

    • Rofl =)

    • nice one. Could really hide an actual sewing machine behind it

      • -2

or use a pic of a sewing machine as your screen saver…

  • Has 3D been standardised yet? Do Sony, Panasonic, etc.. use different 3D standard?

    • -5

      the screen is actually 2D.

      the 3D isn't real, it's an optical illusion…

    • +3

There are two technologies; active and passive. Passive is similar to what you see in the cinema, where a polarised set of glasses directs half of the screen's resolution to each eye. Cheaper to add lots of sets, lighter, comfier glasses but as above less resolution.

Active uses a battery powered set of glasses that uses shutters to block out one eye, allowing the monitor to display a full resolution image to only one eye. Obviously this happens quick enough that it appears to be continuous motion. Upside is full resolution, downside is heavier glasses, with each manufacturer using different methods to do this 'active' syncing, which are therefore proprietary and often expensive. Personally this also distracts me with the noise of the shutters and gives me a headache from flickering..

      YMMV of course :)

      • Does this monitor do active or passive 3D?

        • Active. Works great.

      • I will wait for a passive 3D TV but is there a different 3D blueray format for each active and passive 3D TV?

        • Passive is no where near as effective, I doubt it will ever be used in the home setting.

        • Umm, LG's entire consumer 3DTV range would beg to differ :P

@donkeykong: No, it's the same 3D format, the passive vs. active is a debate on the hardware implementation of showing you the two pictures.

        • Thanks, I have just read this review on passive LG. I am willing to sacrifice a slight observable reduced detail for a more pleasant viewing with lighter passive eyewear.

          http://www.digitalversus.com/tv-television/lg-47lm660t-p1328…

        • Well I'll never be using them then, passive doesn't work for me. At best I see a normal picture and at worse I get a thumping migraine. It's why I hate going to the cinas with people who like 3D.

        • Why would the views of those in your company affect your enjoyment of the attended movie? I would expect the 3D or non-3D nature of the film to have a greater effect ;)

        • Because having a migraine doesn't lead to enjoyment of the movie?

    • For a dollar less you lose a lot of response time… And I personally find LG screens to be quite lackluster, my TV/monitor from them has horrible viewing angles.

    • No, it's not 120Hz as far as I can tell - it's 60Hz. Note that if you're using 3D on the posted screen, the refresh rate drops to 60Hz overall (60Hz left, 60Hz right).

  • My brother bought the 27" (without HDTV tuner) for around $500 4 or 5 months ago and it's a fantastic monitor. If anything, the stand makes it look very modern, I don't see why there are complaints of it being distracting…

  • I have the 27" model. Great monitor but I think if anybody wants to use the 23" for 3D might be too small but for 120Hz it's great.

  • JB HiFi sent me a monitor that someone had returned. Was missing the 3d glasses.
