Tiger is farmed. Banana is farmed or wild caught?
Good price but Coles black tiger prawns are still my children’s favourite.
who cares
😂
farmed vs wild caught makes a difference to what they are fed and taste. like farmed salmon, less omega 3 than wild caught, yes you can get frozen wild caught salmon from canada.
We can all go bananas for these prawns
Stored 2 kgs in freezer now. But seriously haven't seen prawn this cheap since forever..
Need to learn few prawn recipe now
Cheaper than bait!
Black tiger prawns are where it's at! We have found they have the best texture. Not a fan of the banana prawns really.
I found tiger prawn tastes better than banana prawn
Wish they were pre-pealed / de headed.
I'm a big wuss and cannot do that myself….
yeah, i hate having to de-head, de-shell, hardest bit is de-veining ….don’t like eating the poo tube hence de-vein.
They do sell these. They're called prawn meat and it's $28/kg in frozen area.
oh sweet, I can make Còctel de Camarón.
just got 2x 3kg boxes still frozen
My local had thawed loose ones but would only sell me frozen ones in a 5kg box.
Unless you really need it for presentation as a whole, there's way too much wastage/effrort. I've been using https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/666563/jus… for a while now, stir quickly into soup/pasta/salad, makes you far likely to use them as well.
You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich

Asked for 2kgs. When I brought it home I weighed it and it was correct to the sticker. I put it in the fridge for a bit then came back an hr later to divide it up into smaller bags for freezing. Before I split the bag I weighed it again and it was 1.8kg.. O_o thats a lot of paper and water.
i guess stock up for christmas in the freezer, not sure why people line up at Christmas time for prawns as they are frozen and fish monger thaws, australian prawns aren’t kept alive until ship gets to port, they freeze them. then you can be be at home while other’s queue at the market for thawed frozen prawns and watch white christmas, moses, little drummer boy, ben hur and other block busters.
The medium ones were $12 at Malvern Central. They did not have large.

What is the best way to defrost?
Put in fridge a day before you use it. If you need it fast in 1-2 hours, put them inside cold water in room temperature.
If you've bought a box of frozen prawns, separate into manageable quantities & store in freezer. Then transfer a small pack to fridge overnight to defrost.
Bought 3kg box. By time got home, prawns were frozen, but easy to separate. Bagged into press-seal bags (12 per bag) & into freezer🍤
Just picked up a 3kg box this morning. The sticker on the box said X/large and net weight was 3.48kg. I think I scored, still frozen and easily dividable so put the whole box in the freezer. Decidedly definately devilishly worth getting a box.
As prawns were easily dividable, would make sense to bag up into smaller manageable quantities, unless you want to use the whole 3kg at once later.
Once frozen at home, likely won't be as easily dividable later.
(Packaging weighs ~150g)
Anyone noticed white spots on their prawns? Wondering if it's the white spot disease and that's why they are so cheap.
yes wondering about this myself
Only way to tell is by lab testing as there are lots of other reasons for white spots such as salt crystalisation during freezing. Even if it’s white spot disease there is no health risk to human consumption.
Just a suggestion - ask for them still frozen.
That way you know they'll be good eating. Being thawed on ice tends to leach out the prawns.
Yes you'll pay slightly more as the weight will include some ice - but considerably better quality prawn
So Green Banana Prawns, what color should these be? The ones at my local were a bit grey, and black on edges, innards.
Lucky, $29 for me.
