  • Apart from the 1TB disk, is there any advantage to this of the WD Live ??? It costs about $160 more…

    • Convenience. More elegant than having something attached to it, and faster to play movies directly on the drive than streaming off wifi.

The drive is slow btw. I get write speeds of 14MB/s and read speeds of about 7MB/s. You heard me right, it reads slower than it writes. But I can accept the inconvenience.

  • Was $129 at Dick Smith a month ago

Rip-off at this price in my opinion

    • that was a clearance, they don't sell that model anymore…

    • This is no rip off. If you compare the market price for it, it's lower than most places.

      The $129 was a clearance.

From what I can see, compared to the WD TV Live Streaming Media Player:

    Extras:
    1TB HDD
    DLNA host
    Component out.

    Lacks:
Onboard WiFi (separate USB WiFi adapter required for wireless connectivity)

Overall, it's probably not worth it for most people.

    • I already have a NAS so don't need the DLNA…

Bought this at OW (price-matched DSE) for ~$122 a month or so ago. It works wonders but it's quiet loud (even after you turn it off with the remote). Wouldn't pay $249 for it though, that's for sure.

    • thanks for the warning…

i find my foxtel IQ loud enough, don't need more noise…

      • It honestly depends how/where you use it.
For me, I watch stuff in my small bedroom, so it's annoying as fsck (especially when I'm ready to go to sleep). If you're using it in a living room, I doubt you'll here it (or enough to make the sound annoying). After all, it does have a mechanical drive so it's bound to make noise.

        • when i'm reading at night and the kids are asleep, it can be annoying.

          during the day, i don't notice it…

      • If you're far enough away, you shouldn't hear it, and you definitely shouldn't hear it over the audio from your videos.

    • If you press the power button on the remote it only puts it on stand by, where it's still powering some fans (you can transfer files to and from it over the network in this mode).

You have to hold down the power button to turn it off completely.

      • I have to take the power cord out of it to turn mine off.
There's no real space saving advantage to the 1Tb disk because you fill it soon enough and end up plugging in another drive anyway.

JB HIFI had the 2TB model for $188 this week.
I didnt realise it was such a bargain before reading this

    • That 2TB model most likely is a 3.5" drive (which is cheaper), and thus the unit is also bigger. If that matters.

  • Probably mush better off getting a WD TV Live Streaming player + external 1TB (or more) HDD. Will cost less and give you greater flexibility over your storage. As someone pointed out hardware wise they are internally identical to the streaming player other than the ability to take a 3.5" HDD. Same CPU/RAM and very similar software AFAIK.

If you got a streaming player from OW for $88 the other day then you have it set, grab a 2TB HDD for around $120-$150 and you have virtually the same player with double the storage for less money.

It's a 2.5" drive in the Live Hub.

If you mean you can plug in a 3.5" drive to the Live Streaming, you can also do that with the Hub.

Probably mush better off getting a WD TV Live Streaming player + external 1TB (or more) HDD. Will cost less and give you greater flexibility over your storage.

You can still plug externals into the Hub. Personally I don't think it looks very elegant having something dangle off it. Also it's a few extra steps in the menu to get to external source.

Overall I like the drive, but it's not without faults. The boot time is slow, and the internal drive is slow. Also its support for USB wifi dongles is very limited.

Get the streaming one if you need wifi. If you're after all in one convenience though, it's not a bad deal.

      • Oh didn't realize it's a 2.5", but yes I was talking about the internal drive. I know you can use externals with the hub, but with the flexibility comment I meant you have the flexibility to decide which HDD you want to use for that price (under $250), rather than pay up for only 1TB of initial storage capacity. Or if you already have an external then even better.

It's my understanding the hub also has noticeable fan noise, this could be a killer for quiet movies at night. The streaming is silent (proper silent, not "very quiet"), and most external HDD's only run at 5400rpm and are often rubber mounted in their enclosures so that would suit people with sensitive ears more. Like me :D
