I think the main selling point is to save counter space. You could potentially squash the roll somewhat to make it less likely to spin itself wildly.

True, but it would now take up 0% bench realestate which can now be used for other items (or kept clear and clean)

I have this, sticks great with the tape supplied, generally have to use 2 hands but main point for us is the fact it sits under the overhead cupboard nicely and not on the bench
