StreetSmart Greater Perth Street Directory 2011 Edition by Melways Group $0.98 @ Officeworks

400

I know most ppl would not buy an outdated street directory, but a true ozbargainer would just get one and apply the updates with a pencil to save a few bucks.

For 98 cents there is not much to lose anyway. The current edition retails for about $35 so it is a significant saving.

This is produced by the Melways group, so the sizing/look-and-feel would be very similar to a Melway which is one of the better ones in the market.

avoid this suburb, avoid that suburb, definitely dont drive down here

  • I really don't get this weird logic. Why would they even bother selling it to make a dollar…damn paper is worth more.

The problem is you are looking backwards. You have to look forwards. They've already written it down in their system and they need to get it off the shelves. It's cheaper if a customer takes it out of the shop, rather than staff putting it into paper recycling. Besides their markdown system is automated anyway. Sometimes we benefit from this since the computer has no idea of what might become valuable at a lower price point.

also someone might come in and spend money on other stuff. That's why we have 'loss leaders'

    • Its called cost price! selling at a dollar could save a few that will take to dispose it off!

  • aww a;ready out of stock

  • Melways are recognised as far and away the best in the market for suburban mapping.

If you got a few of these you can make a decent massive wall map of your area (would need to get it laminated). I've done it.

shame their business model isn't going to survive unless they smarten up a bit…

      • My understanding is they're doing fine.

Where have you been jv? I've missed you.

I've stopped buying them after religiously buying each new edition.
          I'm sure I'm not the only one…
It is mainly older people who buy them, so their market is going to continue to decrease unless them improve their electronic offerings…

I found UBD is the directory used in Perth. Melways for Melbourne. But between google maps and gps, I'm not sure I'd want a book to store or lug around.

    How do these work again?

There is no Jones St at G 14…. oh wait…. it's on adjoining map…. 23 pages back.

    Ahhh…. such joys, such memories.

    +1 for the pencil trick.

There is a similar hint for a cheap Personal Address Book.

Just get yourself a normal telephone book (free), and cross out the names of all the people that you don't know!

      • +10

to ensure cost is kept to $0, ensure pencils are picked up from Ikea or the local club

If you live in perth, this is a great deal. Sydney, not so much

  • I've just checked with OfficeWorks phone order section: ALL stock gone! Website only updates 1-2 times daily!

how many people still clicked through even tho everyone said it was out of stock? That's true ozbargaining

    • <raises sock>

People still use paper maps in the metro areas? Cheap museum piece or something to show the grandkids in a few years I guess.

    • "gather round kids, this is what we used to find our way around town"

As a Perth native, the thing I want most from a street directory is the quickest and easiest path out of here.
