Sidchrome 1/2" 60 Piece Drive Socket Set $99 (Was $237)

Features
✓1/2 inch sockets
✓Sidchrome – built to last a lifetime
✓Ratcheting T handle screwdriver and bits

This 60 piece socket set from Sidchrome is perfect for the industry professional and home handyman alike. Including ½’’ sockets and accessories plus a ratcheting screwdriver handle and bits, this set features the TorquePlus fastening system, a unique system that allows greater contact with the flats of fasteners, providing greater torque to make tightening easier. Conventional sockets and spanners damage fasteners by concentrating forces on the corners. Sidchrome drive design spreads force over a larger contact area, reducing rounding off and extending fastener life. TorquePlus is ideal to use on damaged, frozen or rusty fasteners.

  • Is this overkill for home use? Would likely only use it a few times per year. Been wanting a set for ages and would prefer high quality.

    • +10

Yes, definitely overkill for home use. Unless you live in a castle and your house is covered in bolts that you would see on the Sydney harbour bridge.

I’d suggest a 3/8 or 1/4 socket set would be a more functional size for home use.

      • +3

Something like I/N 6123418 for $59 would likely suffice. There's also a cheaper supatool branded set, but you'd want to check the quality in store. It may be fine, but some cheap sets are flimsy. Flimsy cases are a pain if they break.

        • +3

Avoid sup atoll is my advice. Have a work mate that for some reason refuses to buy anything else(I guess cause of the price) but every second ratchet in a set they buy the whole head mechanism is out of alignment. The quality is horrendous, warranty makes it okay but we shouldn’t support cheap manufacturing like that.

          • +1

@doobey1231: I guess i got lucky, i was surprised with the supertool quality and i have used my Dad's snapon gear for years.

            • +1

@Spendmore: Ditto. Been using my supatool set for 15 years and it’s taken a beating. Even used it for impact driving which it wasn’t designed for and it delivered.

            • @Spendmore: Well they gotta get it right at some point considering the warranty, but two returns within 3 months is enough to make me steer clear from the company.

          • @doobey1231: Been using my supertool kit for 20 years. Still going strong.

        • Flimsy cases are a pain if they break.

So true. Many years ago I bought a cheap set, and used it to work on the car in the back yard. The moulded plastic insert that holds everything softened and distorted, just from the heat of sunlight! It's much harder to find the socket you want, if the sockets are loose in the box.

      • +3

1/4" is too small for anything thst needs some weight to fix or hold. 10mm fixings is the max it can really handle IMO.You wouldnt want to try driving a bolt into a harfwood joist for instance say for fitting a clothes drier as ome example.

3/8" is the goldilocks spot, not too big, not too small, ok for 6mm to 17mm.

        • Yeah agree. 3/8 is my most used size ratchet. I think most people could get away with a good 3/8 ratchet and an el cheapo 1/4 set.

          • @Worf: Thats a good point, 1/4" is never going to be subject to high torque loads so you can go cheap but if your trying to bust big siezed nuts with a 1/2" drive large socket and extension bar cheaper sockets will either crack or round out.

    • +3

1/2 inch is a bit big for general home use and doesn’t do smaller sockets like on bikes, 3/8 inch set covers smaller sockets and large enough for most cars unless you need larger sockets for 4 wheel drive. The supercheap toolpro-x in 3/8 is a great set, same pattern as kinchrome lok-drive and will grip rounded nuts as it’s 6 point not 12 point, so more contact with the nut. Metalurgy has come a long way in 40 years, and sidchrome is just a brand that stanley uses in the australian market.

    • +7

No. You will have it for life.
The 1/2” is smooth like butter for big bolts. You never know when you’d need it. The power you get from it is amazing. I had smaller ratchets which needed a lot of power behind them, sometimes they’d slip and I’d bang my knuckles on the next surface. Still hurts thinking about it.

    • +3

Had 1/4 and 3/8" for a while. its fine for working around the house but I have started working on my car and even for basic things you sometimes need 1/2" drive stuff like breaker bar to undo filters etc.. Bigger stuff like brakes etc and you definitely need 1/2". I reckon its great to have it laying around as you never know when you may need to use it.

    • +1

I have a little Millwaukee 1/4in set at home, it has both Metric and Imperial, metric up to 15mm. it does 90% of what I want it for, only pull out the 1/2in for doing work on the car, which doesn't happen very often these days.

    • Nope. And get a peewee 1/4" set also when they come up on special.

    • +3

Buy once, buy right. Get 'everything' and never worry about it again.
Wait for this to go on special around the $200 mark (its quite often)
      https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/toolpro-toolpro-automoti…

In my use alone, these ToolPRO sets have built several hotrods, a few harleys and repaired all manner of drift cars, and show zero signs of wear.
      They're genuinely a great product.

      • Ooft, she's a big one!

        • +1

          Yes she is! hehe
I always recommend this kit when someone asks 'what tools they need at home'.
It's an assumtion, but it's usually a pretty safe one, that they don't currently have ANY tools at home, and are wanting something they can pickup, and have what they need.

This is convenient, and covers nearly everything I've ever needed rebuilding cars and doing home repairs (minus hammer and drill).

    • yes way overkill, home use is 1/4".

    • +2

Also… fasteners used around the house are typically screws (Phillips head 2, odd Allen key type). Bolts around the home that use a socket are tek screws (8mm), Dynabolts/ankascrews, and maybe a few coach bolts. (Subtext - 3/8 or 1/4 ratchet is better / OK for these applications… I would avoid using a 1/2” ratchet for an 8mm tek screw).

I find that I don’t use a socket and ratchet around the home much. I mainly use it for car DIY - and typically use a 3/8 ratchet plus 10mm, 14mm, 15mm and 17mm. Plus a deep socket (for spark plugs).

Supercheap auto’s tool pro ratchet is pretty good and comes with a lifetime warranty

    • I have had this set for 10 years. Very useful and will last a lifetime. All the cheaper sets I have either rust or break.

    • 1/2" drive absolutely required for vehicle use, not so much if just around the house. The price is right.

  • +2

been looking for something to put in the ute ty op. my shed is a sidchrome sanctuary now

  • +4

I bought mine 35years ago and still use it.

    • +1

sheesh! 35 years ago! that's great longevity!.
are your nuts still moving freely with it?

      • +2

are your nuts still moving freely

Yeah they tend to do that as you get older and ageing/gravity takes its toll.

        • excellent! great to hear.

  • +1

looks to be price match with trade tools

  • +2

Comes with a Sidchrome sticker too :)

  • Damn I need a decent set just for home use, and light vehicle (ie. just battery removal etc). Want a good deal on 1/4" :(

    • +1

      consider an all-rounder 3/8 set

      • Oops I ordered this anyway. Surely i'll use it… LOL. Will just keep my eye out for a good sale on a 1/4" now too

    • +1

This is a decent set for home use….

      • OK thankyou, makes me feel better seeing as I pulled the trigger and bought them through FOMO hahaha

  • +1

I got an earlier version of this set from Bunnings for $20 about 20yrs ago. Perfect for home use and minor work on cars.
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/stanley-60-piece-1-4-3-8-socket-…

    • This would be a better set due to 1/4 and 3/8 size.
      1/2 is too big

    • +4

Stanley ratcheting tools are absolute snot these days, no way do they live up to the quality of the set you have

    • and it's 6 pt sockets so grip better.

    • Stanley has gone from being a quality brand to a brand that only has the name, the products are pretty base tier, sometimes garbage…

I bought a trolley jack and the wheel almost unbolted itself and collapsed the jack

      • And Stanley now owns Sidchrome, these tools are but a shadow of when they were originally made in Australia. (I'm a mechanic with almost 40 years experience).

        • Maybe, but we didn't have ratcheting spanners, and my dads ratchet handles while still working (technically) are loose AF and barely click. Also the old black handles have broken at the ends. They are 50 years old at least tho

  • Is this a metal case?

Also where are the impact socket deals 😭

    • Yes

  • +2

    There's still also a Sidchrome 28 piece 1/2” drive set for $29.98…

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/788584

    • If Bunnings stocks the exact same item and the price it's not the same they can beat by 10% . That deal it's from Sydney tools so I am guessing you can price beat only in NSW.

      • +4

You know sydney tools has stores all around australia right?

      • No, I've had them price match the QLD stores several times; it's an Aus wide policy.

      • Bunnings does NOT stock the 28 piece set, so that's all moot anyway.

    • Whats better, the main deal for $99 or to buy all 3 in the link listed here, also for $99?

      • Just buy the 28 piece I mentioned. Unless you think you would use the larger bolts.

  • +3

These could easily strip a stubborn bolt which happens quite alot. I recommend the 6 point sockets over this.

  • I've had this exact set for the best part of 15 years, been absolutely brilliant throughout and got a lot of use in that time.

  • +2

might be worth noting here that the sockets appear to go up to 32mm, might be useful to someone chasing some larger sockets.

  • delivery is not free. it shows as $10 for me

  • +2

    This a very good deal.

However, I can't stand when these x-piece sets contain a bunch of those tiny driver bits just to pump the numbers higher.
There are 18 in this set and to me it should really be sold as a 42 piece.

  • +2

Wish they offer more metric only choices.

I don't have actual statistics, can only assume (may be wrong) that imperial sockets are getting little use these days. So 15 of the 33 sockets are practically useless for most people buying the set. What a waste of 1/2" sockets.

    • +1

very good for working on classic cars

    • +1

You're getting it for less than 1/2 price so not a waste, plus some of us still work on older cars.

    • Depends on what you are working on. Some nuts and bolts are so badly rusted that you can get away with hammering an imperial socket on it till it's tight. Not a waste.

  • Picked one up this morning, thanks O.P.

  • -2

$99 is about all these are worth.

  • Is this good for working in bikes?

    • Someone commented above, may be too big for bikes. I assume they meant pushies and stuff.

    • If you don't know the answer already, then you won't be able to work on a bike 😓

  • Thanks, Op. bought 1.
now to decide what to buy so that I put these to good use. maybe a broken car??

  • Thanks OP, if they're supposed to last a lifetime, why not.

  • Got one, thanks OP!

  • I wouldn't buy this purely because it's misleading in my view. If the manufacturer wants to market a 60 piece socket set then lets see sockets not screwdriver bits.

  • +1

I don't see how this is that much of a deal, sure it comes in a metal case but you could pick up the 1/2 in set from Sydney/total tools for 20 or 30 bucks last week. Yeah it comes with some bits but that's not work 70+ dollars. Look for a set in sydney/total tools, there might still be some stock

    • Exactly, but don't post that all the folks who bought one will neg you. $99 is about all its worth, the RRP is highly inflated.

      • I picked the 1/2, 3/8, and an extra set of torx and Allen key bits and sockets for less than this delivered. Might still be able to find them if you look hard enough

  • Got one earlier today, thanks OP.
