nbn Connection - Termination

Hi folks,

My home internet (nbn - fixed line) is running out in a few days.

I wondered what happens if I don't port to another service provider before the cut-off date. Will I get charged a reconnection fee if I connect or port to another provider months down the track?

My current provider advised me to port before the cut-off date to avoid reconnection fees.

I was looking to trial a 5g connection while I decide what to do moving forward.

I appreciate any feedback or experience anyone has with this.

What do you mean by "running out"?

Yeah, but to AndyC1's point… that doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense with NBN. They aren't going to come in and remove your cables.

NBN is a flick of a switch type deal with provisioning. You can, and usually are, up and running within hours of signing up unless you need a technician visit (usual for brand new builds).

What's the context here, OP? Did you put in a 30 day cancellation notice or something? If so, porting out before the cut-out date might mean "so that you don't experience downtime", or it could mean "in case we forget to put through the cancellation for you." I've yet to hear of a time it ever meant "so that the wires don't get disconnected from the NBN network".

Just read it as end of contract with current provider, with the outside chance current provider is closing down.

@randomusername2017: Yeah, that's a good possiblity. OP, is the current ISP closing down?

              @Morien: spintel promo

Just churn to a new promo/isp with no setup or connection fees. Superloop, TPG, Aussie come to mind.

              • @randomusername2017: It was end of a promo contract so the kill date is mid august and I didn't want to renew at the inflated pricing.

The isp (spintel) isn't closing down, that I know of.

I was going to trial a 5g connection to compare speed and pricing and then ultimately choose a better option or jump back onto another promo plan (mate has a trial for 1 month @ $1)

The way spintel presented me leaving was 'you'd better port before the last day or you may get a reconnection fee' - this may have been a communication barrier.

                • @eriklee: Ah.

Nothing is being disconnected. Just make sure you've cancelled with spintel so they don't charge you again.

Some ISPs may charge a connection fee, but that's different between providers, and certainly cheaper than paying for a service you aren't using.

      • What is being cut off and why? Is it POTS?

      • who is your nbn co? and why?

    • Good question
Usually any plan keeps going until terminated
OP has been given incorrect advice

Ask your service provider if they can offer you a break without penalty.

  • was this over a phone call, or over email? have you actually called your ISP from the number On their website (no through the correspondence they provided) and confirm who and why they are doing this, this doesnt really seem legit.

    • was this over a phone call, or over email?

Someone with an accent called, they were from nbn® Co. They informed him that scammers had accessed his account and his internet will be disconnected.

      • I called the isp directly, so no scammers are involved here.

        See above for context.

From personal experience, there are usually no reconnection or connection fees with NBN. Case in point:
    - Was with spintel and asked them to terminate and cancel the connection by the end of the billing date as the 6 month discount was ending.
    - Signed up with exetel, but the transfer did not go through in time.
    - Got disconnected by spintel and lost internet for the night.
    - Contacted exetel to resubmit and was reconnected a few hours later. I was not charged a reconnection or connection fee.

    • This is my exact situation - thanks for letting me know that someone else is having the same issues.

I may just let it lapse to test a 5g connection and see if this is a better fit, otherwise will be trialling mate nbn for $1

There isn't a re-connection fee. Do you have FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, HFC?

Do you have FTTP, FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, HFC?

      Yes, he has him/her/them.

FTTB, if you see the response above, it will give context. Thanks for the reply.

  • If you are trialling 5G, it is only good for downloading. Unless it has improved recently upload speeds are worse than 4G and any video meeting calls will probably be unworkable. It might also be better if you live inside Melb or Sydney CBD.

  • Most ISP offers free connection. Don't worry too much OP.

  • ISP used to charge a setup fees previously but most doest these days. So i think you jist need to cancel the connection before the end of your billing cycle.

Then just find another ISP that deosnt charge a setup fee if you want to go back to NBN.

  • Just change providers before the cut off date and that way you still will have internet.
5G is really only good as a backup service or if no other technology such as FTTP is available.
For 5G to be as good or better then NBN you need to be on a business Fixed Wireless plan with both the same download and upload speed allowances.
These can be expensive as the 5G spectrum isn't cheap.
