    • Good thoughts by @rygle below.

It really depends on what you're planning to do—they both can do pretty the same thing (both original language research or being an electronic library) but each has their strengths.

I use both on a Mac. Accordance is my daily driver for original languages work (and I have a few commentaries and other resources). Logos is mainly for other books (commentaries/books). To me, Accordance is much faster—but not as 'pretty' as Logos.

    Nice one, thank you!

  • Hi OP, can you share what makes it ‘excellent’?

    • +3

      Not the OP—but here's my $0.02.

The NIV Application Commentary series has been around for a while and has a unique approach. Each section of the commentary has three parts: the 'original meaning' which is like most commentaries (generally not very technical, fairly brief) then a 'bridging context' and 'contemporary significance' section.

In the best examples in the series, it's the Bridging Contexts and Contemporary Significance sections that can be really helpful for preaching and teaching—they start your creative juices working. But some of the volumes can be be pretty disappointing in these sections.

Have a look at https://www.bestcommentaries.com/series/niv-application-comm… where each volume is rated and reviewed.

Why do we have arguments about religion every time some one posts a bargain? It’s either a bargain or it isn’t, full stop.

    • +14

      Ozbargain is a religion

      • +5

        Amen

          What's today's best bargain… pray tell!

            • @muncan: terrific! thanks for that. I'm thinking, with 50 of them hooked up on my belt, I could be more effective than a longliner.
Now I've got to look for a good deal on fishhooks or lures, then find the dinghy…. and I'l be jiggityboo.

I’m not even religious and I’m tired of the usual comments that always get posted on anything religious-themed. Some people just can’t help themselves.

Sometimes I think some Whirlpool-style moderating is warranted here.

      • I miss FOG (Falcon on gas).

    • Is it so bad to discuss or argue a point? NIV itself does say to "demolish arguments".

It seems that today the vast MAJORITY of people around the globe have blind faith in bronze and plastic idols like Lucy in the Smithsonian.

And this blind faith with its prophets and preachings is really the ONLY basis for atheism, agnosticism, climate alarmism, adultery and broken families, the racial voice to parliament, and much much more.

Meanwhile, every single time they read and write the date it points to a real man who had a real and public execution in Jerusalem, and whose real genealogy affirms a starkly different timescale of all history.

As this man is followed by billions for proving his authority over death, it is surely the absolute height of foolishness to refuse to even discuss or consider him and how he presents himself as our ultimate choice about life and death, and eternity itself!

So this is their inconvenient truth… people prefer to be in denial of their false religion, blind faith and idolatry of literally-fabricated bronze and plastic skeletons like Lucy. They do not wish to discuss or even consider the evidence and whether they may be wrong.

It's a (profanity) bargain website. What they are saying is, once there's a bargain relating to anything religious people start ranting and from I can see its the non-religious and their opinions. Nothing to do with the (profanity) deal itself.

        • +2

And do you know the very first bargain posted is for a Christian bookstore? Node 1 from 2006…

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/1

I would say just let them rant… for these so-called "non-religious" their ranting appears to only demonstrate the height of their folly.

          • @inherentchoice: Oh no, incoming smite.

Pretty sure it's societies duty of care to call out snake scat oil brain worms.
Turn the other cheek is your duty of care

            • @Protractor: Incoming since 26 days ago?

To "call out" something is very different to suppressing.

  • Is this fiction category?

    • Bro let people live their life based on a book rampant full of homophobia and sexism cmon man

somewhere in the "P" fiction category…. between pseudo and science.

Loads of unhelpful comments here. Just wanted to break from that and say thanks OP for posting this. Much appreciated having a new resource for my Logos library.

      Loads of unhelpful comments here.

      I know. Sigh.

I guess there must be some certain level of smug satisfaction from logical and rational thinkers when they observe the apoplectic responses of believers in sky fairies trying to justify their ancient goat-herder beliefs.

      • VS people sharing unwarranted opinions about said religion having nothing to do with the deal itself.

  • I've found the NIVAC series a mixed bag—but I've grabbed this (it's free—why not!) and also a few of the others from the same series which are on sale this month.

  • +1

I have some snake oil. It's free this month. Can I post it as a bargain?

  • I used to call myself an atheist until I discovered videos about the universe on YouTube and realised that you either think you know how big the universe is OR you actually understand just how ridiculously huge it is and realised you are agnostic at best and that it’s absolutely absurd to call yourself an atheist.

    • +3

Wait until you find out that the ultimate answer to life, the universe and everything is 42!

    • +2

So if you think the universe is a few thousand light years wide then of course there's no god, but if you realise that it's billions of light years wide then it's absurd that there's no god. Very good.

      • Maybe its absurd that he created something so big with billions of galaxies but only put life on one planet with a talking snake.

        • +2

Not all theists oppose the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

    • +1

I think the point here is that the absurdity of a higher power (most will agree) does not directly mean there definitely isn’t one. In other words you’d surely be crazy to argue either way. I mean how do you know?

      • Several key factors in Christian apologetics contribute to the notion of probability regarding the existence of a higher power, such as God:

        1. Cosmological Argument: The universe's origin and fine-tuning suggest the need for a transcendent cause, pointing towards the existence of a Creator.

        2. Teleological Argument: The complexity and order in the natural world, including biological systems, imply design, which suggests an intelligent designer.

        3. Moral Argument: The existence of objective moral values and duties implies a moral lawgiver, which aligns with the concept of God.

        4. Historical Evidence: The historical reliability of biblical accounts and the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ provide a solid foundation for considering Christianity's claims.

        5. Personal Experience: Many believers cite personal experiences of encountering God or experiencing spiritual transformation as evidence for God's existence.

        6. Philosophical Reflection: Philosophers have explored the nature of reality and consciousness, leading to arguments for the existence of a higher power.

While none of these factors alone provides conclusive proof, collectively, they contribute to a cumulative case for the probability of God's existence.

Atheism is also considered a belief, and when considering the factors surrounding the existence of God, some argue that the probability of God's existence is higher.
Atheism faces challenges in explaining ideas like something coming from nothing and the emergence of a mind from matter (ie. a rock will eventually gain consciousness over trillions of years).

      • +1

Bingo. With the math of just probability, it’s hard to argue that there is no possibility of a ‘creator’ - in whatever form that may be. Even if that means we are in a simulation or a multi-verse exists or something else. When you try to wrap your mind around the sheer size of the universe(of what we just know) it’s just mind blowing to me. I know a lot of people will laugh at the point I’m making or simply dismiss it… but I think those who have some basic understanding of what I mean will understand. I respect everyone’s view, not trying to stir the pot, just sharing my own.

"While none of these factors alone provides conclusive proof, collectively, they contribute to a cumulative case for the probability of God's existence"

You set it out as if your argument is based on logical deduction…. it is not. It's all quasi reasoning trying to prove the impossible.

    • +2

You mentioned that it's impossible, which suggests you've made up your mind. Once someone has made up their mind, it's highly unlikely that any argument will change it.

    • Takes a lot of faith to believe that everything just, somehow, came to be.
That we have evolved from some kind of primate over millions of years.
That, maybe, in another million years, apes might have finally invented industry and civilization of their own.

I find it curious how so many can question the beliefs of others ("how can you really believe [the Bible]") without asking themselves the same question of whatever they believe.

I suspect if people genuinely questioned their own beliefs and investigated why they hold them, they would eventually arrive at some form of 'truth' that they have an explainable position on.

      • Goes well beyond evolution from primates. What about some fish deciding it wanted to breath air so grew lungs over millions of years and then wanted to walk on land so grew legs, feet and toes as well.

      • The joke's on the apes. We would have used all the fossil fuels by then.

  • Thanks so much OP.

  • According to confirmation email, I need to download logos app to read it. That true? Can I get it in pdf or other standard ebook format? No way I'm downloading yet another reading app just for this.
