Any leads on a good 4K reader for Mac/Windows? Keen to digitise some of my discs.

  • Sweet, let me watch my old DVDs of DivX rips of The Office.

    • +1

That. Or these DVD drives can go in handy to read those old burnt CD or DVDs with family photos or whatever to archive it onto HDD or flash drive.

    • +4

Don't say DivX, I feel 10 years older for thinking about it.

      • Lucky rich folk.
I was still in highschool during those days, clunky Xvid encoders were the only option for us; none of us could afford a DivX licence.

        • I didn't get a DVD player until well and truly after DivX was done. I just did some reading and turns out I knew nothing about it, I had seen numerous pirated DVDs from buddies like 10/15 years ago that would show the logo at the start, I had no idea it was an entire format / oofshoot of DVD, figured all this time it was just a fancy pants AVI player or something.

          The more you know.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: Yeah, it was a full licenced video codec. Its still around today. Most people have switched to H264 though.

But for both those codecs, most people cant afford the licence costs, so are using compatible open source alternatives like Xvid and X264.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: I can remember a mate going into Harvey Norman many years ago and buying a 2x? cd player with a soundblaster card for 499.00, cd mind you no dvd then, plus some obscure burning software that crapped itself if you farted withing 10 ft

      • 90's gangang

    • +3

I see DivX and i instantly think of DVDCopyX.. nostalgic

    • I can watch my real player and flash movies from the 90s on CD

      • VLC handles both quite well.

I miss realmedia; once PCs were powerful enough to actually decode it in a timely fashion, the quality was insane.

      • +3

WINAMP “It really whips the Llama’s ass!” BAAAAAA!

        • Still my chosen player.
But the new version is quite unstable, I suggest sticking with 5.8 until the next patch.

If all you want is an external USB DVD writer. Then you can buy an actual brand name off ebay for $39 delivered. Be better than this noname crap. Samsung GP60NB50 DVD writer.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/294738925125?hash=item449fcf1645…

    • +2

I take your point but that's an LG

      • Better than a noname brand (if it even is a brand) which one has never heard of. I wouldn't trust that with a 10 foot pole to last even a few months before carking it.

If you want a different brand there's ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U LITE for $34.60 delivered. Still way more reliable.

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/314745742676?hash=item49484ee554…

    • Edit: Yeah i meant LG, not Samsung, and also $39.80 delivered, not $39. A few typos.

    • +2

That LG is cheaper at Amazon with next day delivery for me ($37.95):
      https://www.amazon.com.au/LG-Super-Multi-Portable-Rewriter-G…

      • Well there you go good find. Which would you trust this noname brand or that LG DVD writer.

        • If all you want is an external USB DVD writer.

still apples and oranges, ultimately they are different products and this "noname has more features

so unless you can link a like4like from LG or whatever branded

      • Bought this two years ago when it was on special for $28.

  • +8

    I love ORIGBELIE

  • I know reviews shouldn't always be taken at face value but they are worse than usual for this device

    • Its probably because people dont realise how much power these DVD readers need and how little power a normal USB port can provide. You'd need to use both ports to get enough power, and then it might not support multiple ports at the same time, so using all the ports at the same time likely wouldnt work.

  • Thx. Been looking for an inexpensive external disc drive for my laptop. Can't believe nowadays there were none in modern laptops haha

    • They take up a ton of space and feature moving parts for a medium which is largely obsolete for the lowest common denominator's use case.

      • take up a ton of space

        14" T420 Thinkpad: Am I a joke to you?

They've actually been ripping everyone off with less features.

Can't even find many such new laptops with at least 3 USB-A ports nowadays which still be common in usage

        • 14" T420 Thinkpad

At 3.1cm tall when closed, that's a thicc boi

  • +4

    Inflated retail price for sure…

    https://amzn.asia/d/fHlpJkP

16x write speed, similar ports, same pricing.

    • Agreed.

I was just about to post this too.

Not really a deal. More like inflated pricing and lowered to make it feel like a deal.

    • +1

How do you get 16x write speeds for laptop style drives which are only designed for 8x.

If it does indeed spin at 16x in a laptop style drive then it will be horribly noisy and unreliable. They aren't designed to operate at that RPM. But there's no way i can believe a 16x DVD speed claim for a laptop style external DVD drive. I've never seen one maybe for a reason.

      • there's no way i can believe a 16x DVD speed claim

I can't see that claim made anywhere. It's probably 16x for CD writing, and they're being intentionally vague.

        • +1

Fourth picture down shows and claims 16x CD & DVD writing speed. But i call BS on that for DVD writing. There's no way that this writes a DVD at 16x speed. More like 8x DVD max in reality.

          • @hollykryten: I'm looking at the pictures, and I still can't see 16x DVD speed claimed. I can see two pictures with "24x CD Read/Write" and "8x DVD Read/Write", did they change the pictures?

    • Is that an original BEEDOVE optical drive? How does that compare to a HORNETPENGUIN one?

    • $33.59

i reckon some of us would pay extra 60c for a reasonable seller like it

  • +1

any deals on a vhs player?

    • That’s a really good question (not being sarcastic either). I have some old VHS tapes, wanted to play them to convert them to disc, but my VCR bit the dust and chewed the tape.

Seems it’s near impossible (and expensive) to buy a VCR now. It’s also difficult finding a decent one 2nd hand.

      • why not convert straight to digital MP4 format?

        • +1

I have a DVR, and I was just going to essentially "dub" the few VHS tapes I wanted to keep and record them onto disc… once they're on disc I can make backups of them or rip/convert to any format, but without a working VCR, that's a lil difficult.

  • +1

24X read speed and we can dream back in the 90s.
Maybe drives compatibility issues with Windows too so no thanks I don't take the risk.
I also have plenty of games and data discs but I can't use them anymore because they are not compatible with modern computers.
Just buy a well known and reliable brand, spend $5-10 more and avoid getting another cup holder.

    • I get the feeling once this is passing through usb it will be more compatible, but maybe someone can verify about the logic or maybe someone who actually has one can comment.

The last optical drive I relied on is in an old Dell laptop that I still have which runs some flavour of Linux depending on the time period, and it had enough issues even though it wasn't an uncommon drive, so I do hear ya

  • +1

Jokes aside, now I can listen to lossless music on CDs from my PC.
People big on vinyls but CDs is where it's at imo!

  • -2

I'm 12 and what is this?

  • +1

Are DVDs eternal? As in make a video, include inside my coffin then in 1M years they can watch it? USB would succumb to floods etc but DVD with plastic should last longerrrrrrrr?

    • I'm pretty sure disc rot exists, maybe try this instead: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record

      • +1

so a gold-plated copper USB flashdrive

        • Apparently even if the flash drive is made of pure gold it won't make a difference. Well the NAND flash inside of it suffers from bit rot when not used for many years making it useless even in storage.

    • Place the video in an airtight, waterproof, and UV-resistant container to protect it from moisture, dust, and potential damage from the burial environment.

      Or a sturdy time-capsule ..
