Steggles Family Roast Chicken Whole haven't gone down to this price since COVID.
While this is 1 cent more expensive than ALDI's Broad Oak Farms Fresh Whole Chicken, Steggles is "slightly marinated for tenderness".

The steggles chicken is 90% chicken lol. I would be expecting approximately 100%!
they pump these up so much.
What do you mean by this?
Pumped with brine to make them more plump and heavy (which also results in more flavour and longer shelf life).
Hmm, if it adds flavour and extends shelf life (which would also help lower the price) i don't really have a problem with that.
@whitepuma: Its very expensive salty water you are paying for.
Pretty much one of the cons that the meat producers undertake to boost their profits. They do it to virtually everything; chicken, bacon, fish, ham, etc.
Its very expensive salty water you are paying for
Well, that's debatable and comes down to perspective…When you compare the price of a woolies steggles chicken to say a chicken you get from a chicken shop or a butcher, it's actually REALLY cheap. So like i said, if that brining process helps add flavour whilst also extending shelf life, which in extension can help lower prices, then i'm all for it.
However if it's got legit health concerns compared to other chickens on the market then i may see why people would be salty about it.
@sane: Does it really matter? We pay like $8-16 for an entire chicken from them
Try raising a chicken from an egg, it’ll cost way more than that
@Zythyx: Done that, can confirm, it costs significantly more
@sane: Exactly. Being able to charge $4/kg (and more when not on sale) for water that costs a couple of cents per chicken at the most, is the greater reason.
@sane: Even salmon??
@Fobsessive: You wouldn’t believe how much salty water is in salmon
@whitepuma: reminds me of frozen scallop shellfish from China - look HUGE when frozen
when cooked in a frypan they shrink to 'what just happened … !?!?!?'
added water costs nothing - and if they can sell it for - hmm - $20/kg there's potential instant profit - until customers wise-up and stop buying them …
@Hangryuman: @Hangryuman, Refer to Zythyx's comment. you're still paying a ridiculously cheap price for the chicken, even when you factor in the water weight. So that little bit of water weight doesn't really matter by comparison. If you don't like it then only buy your chicken from a butcher of chicken shop, do that and you will quickly find out you are paying MUCH more there.
Wonder if they can pump up my muscles so i can look massive
Thats synthol .. bro science
Far out, might as well just get silicone implants at that stage
But pumped up chickens don't have strong muscles… If you got pumped up like a Steggles chicken, you'd look like the flabby love child of Lizzo and Michael Moore.
As long as i look massive
Fully agree. I lurk here but had to sign up just to say I wouldn't even buy these if they were $1.. you can get a nice macro organic chicken for $5 a kg when they come on special, they are much better, these Steggles ones don't taste like anything.
Our chickens have no added hormones
What does it means ?
Is it before or after ded ?
I'd hope it would apply to both or else it would be misleading advertising
I saw some chicken states "Raise without anti biotics". The whole thing is confusing
@frewer: So the hormones would be used to plump the chicken up, getting more meat on its bones (bigger breasts, thighs etc. kinda like puberty for humans). People don't buy chicken with added hormones because they're worried they may have their own levels affected/for animal welfare reasons
The antibiotics are used because of the high density they tend to farm chickens at. If one gets a disease it quickly spreads amongst the flock and so they incorporate antibiotics in to their feed to stave off illness. As a society we have a small level of concern for antibiotic resistance that appears to be developing and so they're marketing it as not having antibiotics for those that care about that kind of thing
In the USA they marinade them with bleach for an extra kick
they marinade them with bleach
They prefer the white meat ?
as preferred by wypipo
Unfortunately, most chickens in Australia also go through a chlorine bath.

Works out cheaper at Woolworths if you
1. Have a 10% off offer as part of Everyday Extras or Woolworths mobile/insurance
2. Pay with discounted e-gift cards (up to 5% off)
3. Factor in earning a miniscule amount of Everyday rewards points
So potentially $3.42/kg plus earnt points
All these hoops have literally turned me/my family away from Woolies. Knowing how Woolies operates, it's probably all built into the grocery pricing so normal people who just tap and go are probably worse off.
Lol I love this description against the product listing
We've taken great care to remove all bones from this product, however some may be present.
Haha, and by great care they mean.. we took the head off.
Good way to score a free chicken by requesting a refund for online delivery orders
What, product not as described? Interesting play haha,
For super crispy fried chicken, boil (choice of seasonings), leave in the fridge for few hours (preferably overnight), lightly coat with cornflour and salt n pepper, shallow, deep or air fry. For condiment, Worcestershire sauce mix with tomato sauce and for extra kick, add Tabasco sauce as well. ENJOY! 🦴
Wait, do you boil the chicken or just the seasonings?
That sounds like way overcooked chicken.
how long do i boil the seasonings for?
Chicken, McFly. Nobody coats my chicken, Needles.
I've boiled the box of denim I found under the bridge and love denim chicken. This sounds great
