XCOM has pretty good native controller support from what I remember so even without the touchpads it should be viable. I don't have an issue with the touchpads but I've had the Steam Controller for years so I'm used to them.

    • +2

I've played a game of Civ V (10 hours) on the deck and I have to say it's not that bad, but also not ideal. The touchscreen on the deck is not very good or accurate so you will mostly be using the trackpads. You also might encounter some small text since these games aren't intended to be played on handheld.

      • I imagined it would be horrible, on my very good desktop, the game turns are sloww once you're in the modern era.

    • +1

Once you get used to the trackpads they're great. And the flexibility of SteamInput is pretty incredible. I made a very close emulation of the console controls for Diablo 3 on the Steam Deck considering Blizzard never ported controller support to the PC client.

    • I'm a huge fan of the touch pads. In fps games, I'm actually better on touch pad than I am with keyboard and mouse. Only issue is that for extended period, the touch pads gets sweaty and accuracy sucks once it does.

    • +1

The touchpads do an excellent job so far, as does the touchscreen in my experience

  • Now shows as $778 for Ebay plus members with 5% off…but any future discount will change this.

    • +3

DASO20 shows 20% off for me even after I purchased one.

  • At Jack deal it is $730 (who ever they are.)

    got one 655.20

This or the ASUS Ally one?

    • +4

the ally is twice this sale price.
Not really a great comparison :P

    • +1

both have pros & cons, ally is also double the price but with more storage

    • +3

Really depends on what you intend to do.

For most people, I think the Steam Deck is the better option.

      • Yeap, had a look at all teh options - and there are a ton but they are all really expensive or not out yet.

For cheap prices you have either:

        Steam Deck
        Switch
        PS Vita (used)

So it depends on what game syou want etc.

The repairability finally sold me on the Steam deck (I already have a Vita)

        • Don't get a vita, it's far too expensive for its age. It's much better to enter the emulation market once you hit the 300 dollars market.

Need to HODL for the Ally !!!

Already released and available at JB HI-FI?

Won't come down to this price if that's what you're wondering

      • No but I got a deal by asking at JB. $1199 + 119 for the warranty, so only paying like $20 extra for 5 years total warranty. Used 15% off gift cards. It’s a winner in my eyes, and can use it as a full windows 11 PC with one cable.

While you can say this + a 500Gb ssd makes it the still significantly cheaper than the rog ally, it’s not a windows device if you need it to play all your other games/do work. Emulators exist but support is never guaranteed.

        • full windows 11 pc!? could be worthwhile replacing my asus pn50 then!

          • @ltwo: I bought it in lieu of a laptop. In a pinch you can still use it as a laptop if you bring a keyboard, but otherwise having a usb c setup anywhere lets you dock it and have it as a pc.

        • +1

$1199 + 119 for the warranty, so only paying like $20 extra for 5 years total warranty.

It already had 5 years warranty. No matter what JB or ASUS say, ACL trumps their warranty claims.

Dont nessecarily go with the Ally theres tons of other stuff on the market or shortly coming out have a good look and compare.

For me (apart from price) why I decided to get the steam deck is that units like the Ally arent nearly as repairable down the track and thats a big reason why I bought it (Already have a larger HDD on order) as well as ultra low power consumption on non-AAA titles and emulation I like playing. 9W is crazy.

  • Any and what AAA games optimised for the Deck?

    • +5
      • How the hell does it play Cyberpunk, my desktop barely runs it?

        • Running linux optimised for gaming with less overheads i guess

        • 800p resolution + Linux + some software wizardry.

It can really run just about anything at 30fps. Only a few specific recent releases it can't at the moment, but even then after some updates it should be able to.

        • Native res on the deck is SMALL. It's 800p. So it has significantly fewer pixels to render. It will also only work on fairly low detail settings for most AAA games to get decent 30FPS+. That and it pretty much relies on AMD's FSR to get stable framerates.

That being said, I am having a blast playing Diablo 4 on it at 50-60FPS.

  • SD owners - do you connect your device to a TV to play with a controller (so it basically becomes a console)?
What's your recommended way to do that?

  • How is this for running Windows more generally? Particularly if I don't want to run games via steam

    • Check out the windowsondeck subreddit

  • Amazed this hasn't sold out.

      Ebay plus most likely

      • Yes, all of the deals on https://www.ebay.com.au/deals are ebay plus.
It also has [EBay Plus] in the ozb deal title.

        • I'm aware. I'm pointing out that it probably hasn't sold because it requires an Ebay Plus membership.

          • @Ethan Bargain-Hunt: Sorry mate, I thought you were saying it's "most likely" an ebay plus deal.

          • @Ethan Bargain-Hunt: Trial membership is free or a few bucks a month, so worth it - for big items I guess just subbing for 1 month for that.

            • @Franc-T: Yeah I've unfortunately exercised that trial already (as I imagine most others have). You've just reminded me of my revolut card!

              • @Ethan Bargain-Hunt: Just used my revolut card and bought one. I haven't owned a video game console in 8 years, this is 100% an impulse buy

                • @peskyMatt: Just FYI mine arrived today (At same time the dock as this comes with a non-AU plug). Funny thing is they left it on my doorstep without signature (though im happy they did, was home 10 mins later)

                  • @Franc-T: Auspost said they attempted to deliver mine but I was home all day and they simply didn't :)

I went to auspost to get it and am already playing am2r! After tinkering with it a little bit, it is clearly the perfect device for me - can play all the classics and indie games I want.

Hope you have heaps of fun with it!

                    • @peskyMatt: yeah, just getting into it. I really like this can see myself using it way more than my (numerous) previous handhelds, I no longer surf the internet in bed i now game lol

  • Me scared. Took the plunge.😱

BTW is this console specific to Steam library only or can others (Epic, EA, etc.) join the fun too? I bloody hope so.

    • Yeah, you can use other launchers. Plenty of guides online.

There are a few games that are Windows only due to DRM or anti-cheat but for the most part many other games run without issue.

      • Thanks for the reply. I assume that I can access my Steam account with this device therefore all my games from it will be playable to it? Am I making sense? lol

        • +2

You will be able to access your Steam account. Most games will be playable. Steam will give you a compatibility rating. There's also https://www.protondb.com/

          • -2

@ihfree: Is this proton thingie relevant to the Steam Deck? Is the SD linux based? Sorry, am a complete newb and have no idea where to start.

            • @pacificstorm: YouTube.

Those are all questions that can easily be searched for on Google.

              • -1

@CrispyChrispy: Of course dude, I know that man. I'll be digesting everything I can about the SD from Youtube and beyond lol

It still be nice to hear from fellow Ozbargainers and users about their first hand experiences and what are they doing to fully enjoy the shit out of the console. Don't be a stranger and if you got questions, simply sing out. It's free after all.

                • +1

@pacificstorm: Fair enough, wasn't trying to come across as rude but I was

Have fun with your Deck, I'm personally still trying to decide between this or the ROG Ally, though leaning towards the latter as of now simply for extra performance though battery is a concern :/

                  • +1

@CrispyChrispy: Yeah man, I get ya. I was also aiming for the ROG Ally for its overall superiority but at this price, I just couldn't resist.

Judging from some of the YouTube clips that I have seen so far, looks like I made the right decision in making the purchase.

    • Why you scared?

  • Does anyone have one of these and a PC? I have a good PC and not sure this would get much use, I don't use public transport as I am rural and need to drive.

They are great for people that use them apparently but im not sure if this would just collect dust on the shelf.

    • Yeah, have both. I've used the Steam Deck a fair bit around the house as well in place of my PC.

    • If you have a good PC, the alternative is just get a tablet (Or use your phone), pair with a controller (Optional), install Steam Link and stream all games from your PC.
If your Internet is good enough you can even do this outside of home.

    • I have both. SD is great for lunch time breaks at work, commuting, going on holidays, anywhere you're away from your PC. Hell, even when I'm at home I'll often chill on the couch with the girlfriend and play something while she watches TV.

It can also work as a Steam Link client so you can stream in much higher quality. Effectively turning your Deck into a game streaming box for the TV if you want.

      • Hell, even when I'm at home I'll often chill on the couch with the girlfriend and play something while she watches TV.

        Me 2 soon enough. lol

    • Lol most of my portable gaming devices are used in bed and in the toilet. If anything, I rarely touch my pc with a rx 6800 anymore unless it's Minecraft time. Convenience is that nice

  • Still haven't played my Steam deck yet, I should be concerned.

    • You bought one and havent used it yet? thats what im afraid of. I will buy it and it will gather dust only to have to waste the time selling on market place

      • Yeah, haven't used it yet, got it when it was $655 (20c cheaper) last time.

I might need to buy some games on steam or something.

  • At this price it's hard to ignore. Phantom Liberty should still be playable but my real concern is probably Starfield. Might just stream it or borrow my brother's PC.

The vast majority of my Steam library will be playable though.

    • GamePass + xCloud + iPad (or any tablet) + xbox controller! I use xCloud a bit and it runs beautifully now days even over my phone hotspot.

  • Awesome price! Purchased in the last deal and upgraded to 2TB. It is probably the best gaming purchase that I've made!

  • Anyone notice back light bleed on their steam deck?

Read it was bad on them

Also how is the warranty with this shop on eBay?

  • Shows $849.00-$169.80=$679.20 for me, price raised?

    • +1

Yep jacked ~15min ago at 18:05:33 AEST

      • $684.79 for me just now. Still amost a hundred lower than the Amazon one I had ordered.

Dont like this price change shennanigans though.

        • They are trying to act like Amazon pricing algorithm ;-)

  • Quick question. Those who swapped out SSD, what do you do with the original 64gb SSD?

    • +1

Put it in the new SSD packaging for safekeeping/troubleshooting/warranty returns.

You'll only get about $20 for it if you sell it.

  • +3

Really tempted, but the price jack leaves a bitter taste.

    • +1

Also just got '….You have been successfully subscribed to our newsletter….' wtf

    • Yeah, not buying now. Price will come down again with a new deal sometime in the future.

  • +1

I received mine today. Fast delivery!

  • +1

Mine arrived today via Express Post.

    Brand new sealed.

Didn't come with an AU plug adapter. Not a big deal.

    Very happy.

    • Mine got stuck in Sydney for some reason rather than being in transit.
Ebay tracking there is an issue with the delivery and Aus post app says they have got it. Frustrating to say the least… Aus post sucks.

      • Unfortunately the exact same thing has happened to me mate. No events since Wednesday afternoon and just says "we've got it" in the Aus Post app. :(

      • Came here to say this, No movement since Wednesday nights scan in. Huge bummer

        • Just FYI mines arrived (Melb).

        • How did you go? Mine didn't arrive today, but it's reached Adelaide thankfully.

          • @dogebargain: Same here, reached Adelaide Airport this morning. Now scheduled for Monday :(

      • same when i chased it with aus post they said it was a dangerous good that can’t be shipped

  • ugh i ordered one and it didnt show up today. When i rang AusPost they said mobicity didn't ship it correctly and it was dangerous so they returned it to them. But they cant tell me when because its in the middle of the shipping.

  • mine arrived today (melbourne) which is most ideal because I have a flight tuesday and am now almost looking forward to it

    • Just FYI it's finicky playing games offline. I believe you should preload them and go offline once before the flight to make sure it's working okay.
