    Damn nice deal

      ?

Could mean either James Bond’s phone of choice or the phone spies on you

        • Not a phone that a spy will use as real spies don’t use any devices that are “connected” so people can’t use them to track your movements. They will actually use a modified smart phone that has all the WiFi and Bluetooth antennas removed so they can blend in with their surroundings. Nothing more suspicious than someone whipping out a Nokia 3210 to make a call.

It’s cute how you say this EVERY Google phone deal.

      • +1

Equally as cute that @ozbar has been a member for over a decade but has yet to post a single deal …

Does this have auto call recording?

    • Dunno, but I used to run an app from the store to do that.

      • What's the name of the app? I tried one and didn't work properly

        • I was using Call Recorder - Cube ACR, but recent reviews suggest that it's not so great anymore.

          • @SonOfATightASS: Ah thanks, i tried cube ACR and it wasn't good

            • @Chridim: Cube sucked for me, I now use all call recorder. It's decent, occasional hiccups

    • Only Xiaomi / Miui built in, can't record legally in Australia.

      It's all in the props.

      • Isn't Asus also built in? Or did they stop it
Dad's been using asus due to the built in call recorder

        • Not too sure. Using it is aus? Vanilla android has it but depending on what country it is either disabled or enabled

    • Interested to know, what is your application/scenario is using this auto call recording?

      • +4

Blackmail would be the main use.

      • Question is why not.
Also S23 doesn't have it so cant use it.
It is mainly for my dad for obvious reasons

        • What obvious reasons do you need it?
          To remember details of calls?

      • Set it to auto record all calls with your builder/realetate agent phone numbers that prefer to tell you all their lies over the phone vs email because there isn't a paper trail.

        • Yeah those kents..
Not sure if it holds up legally if you record without permission (?) but good to have up your sleeve to try and keep them honest.

          • +2

@G-rig: Even if it doesn't you at least can keep track of the lies and transcribe them for your own records.

But as far as I am aware in VIC at least, it is a single party consent state so if you are part of the call and consent you are good to go. But yeah its been getting harder and harder to record calls and it is a bummer because it can be very legitimately useful.

When calling places to find out more information about something I find I retain like 40% of the information I was told after i hang up, so it is great to be able to rewind if I need to after the fact.

            • @denserham: Yep 100%, for my dad it's more like 10% which is why he needs phones with built in call recording.

    • Google seems to want to stop call recording being a thing you can do makes it hard for apps to be able to work, even xaiomi stopped putting call recording in their software.

LineageoOS want to be your parents so they blocked all of Australia from recording even if it is legal in your state.

But GraphineOS is very easy to install and feature complete on a pixel recently added a solid inbuilt to dailer call recording, but it isn't auto. Only thing is that you lose access to using google wallet.

TLDR; no perfect solution, blame google.

      • +1

Might start investing in the old tape recorder? Put the call on speakerphone and press record lol….

        • Or get an iPhone

          • @G-rig: Been awhile since I used an iPhone assumed they wouldn't let you record either that is nice, don't want to start using an iPhone though.

            • @denserham: Yes I only ever had one, iPhone 3g, jailbroken haha.

Oh right, I his assumed it was a standard feature unless apple have removed it.

              • @G-rig: Yeah I am the same last iPhone was a 4s I think? Did some googling and recording calls on iPhone is just as hard and hacky as on most Androids.

        • I did that when lineageos and xaiomi rugpulled the feature from me at the same time and I needed to scramble and find a solution.

wonder if you also get this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/790268

        • Oops my bad. Dint see that.

Can anyone confirm if this works?

      • +7

Can confirm. Got $200 gc + $50 coupon.

Note that the coupon expires 31/08/23

    I got 1 for $674 + $150 GC in a previous perks deal

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/778087

    • +5

Pretty good price I got the pre-order deal $999 - $300 coupon, $100 JB hi-fi voucher, bonus Chromecast with Google TV 4K & Google Nest Hub 2nd Gen (sold both), sold pixel 5 for $350. Later 28d price protection claim JB hi-fi price error/banner $599.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/729640

      • Well played

      • How much did you sell the Chromecast and nest for?

        • +1

Cc about $60 and nest $149

          • +2

@G-rig: Really you sold the nest for the RRP price? That's crazy

            • +1

@RQNinja: Nah they costed more back then I think over $200

      • +1

Nice work! Should be leveraging 28D Price protection claim more.

    • It's also been $500ish via Kogan and even potentially sub-$500 if you signed up with Telstra in-store at JB and cancelled during the first month, with the option of a 256 GB model at that time for $28 extra.

This deal is just OK, though you could get their current $1200 gift card deal for a $99 Telstra sign up in-store, cancel, and offset it further ($766.67 + $99 first month, though they may knock the $99 to a pro-rata amount in a support chat).

Would work out to be an effective $512-$576 paid with $200 (+$50 on perks) coming back to you on purchase, with just under $401 (or slightly more after price match) in gift cards left over.

      Not bad for $770-$866 outlay.

      • Sorry could you please elaborate a bit… Are we saying if I signed up for this plan:

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/790840

get a $1200 giftcard and cancel straight away, the early termination cost would only be $766.67 so $433.33 profit?

        • +1

You'll also get charged for the first month, but you may be able to walk most of that $99 fee back. So $334.33 at worst.

If you get most of the $99 reversed, I'd value the Pixel 7 at about $280-$330 bucks in the final transaction, and you'd be walking away with at least $601 in gift cards - subject to any price match for the phone - and that $50 voucher.

I'm assuming that JB will honor that $1200 gift card deal for a new service and number, and if so that's a pretty sweet deal to stack.

  • Since it's now past 9am. Anyone have success using gift card at time of purchase to bring it down to $599?

Or did the gift card need to be used in a separate transaction?

    • +3

Gift card normally issued after purchase :)

    • +1

It has to be used in seperate transaction.

    • I got it for 509.05 (hopefully) check my comment down below

  • +5

Don't forget to buy GC from woolies

  • +2

I used 5% off jbhifi giftcard from jbhifi life rewards. Will get this 200 dollars, + 50 dollars hopefully. So total savings is $289.95 so basically I got this phone for 509.05

Btw officeworks has cheaper phone than jbhifi and jbhifi has to match the price of it. Officeworks has 787 phone and jbhifi is 799. I asked them to give me discount and they said they will give me for 785. But i had already paid 799 in giftcard otherwise I could have got that 14 dollar discount extra. They said if i want that I have to cancel it and it will take 1 to 3 working days to get that money back to my giftcard so I was like leave it. Otherwise I could have got it for 495.05 or 303.95 discount. Kindly tell them to match price before buying.

Not a good phone imo…bought 2 of these as gifts for my family back home…
    Compliants:
extremely slow charging…take about 3 hrs for full recharge ..even with a super fast charger

Gets pretty hot if you intend to use it without a case…

    • +12

Bloody awesome phone in my experience. YMMV.

      • your battery experience? chinese phones have gone mad for fast charging, apple is still slow as (profanity). google still claiming 24 hours use.

    • +1

the superfast charger wont charge more than the port allows.

    • +1

Love mine, and have no trouble with the charging time nor with heat. At least nothing different to my work iPhone.

    • +1

Recently upgraded to the pixel 7 pro from a Redmi note 10 Pro (great value phone btw, got $250 for it after two and a half years use and paying $360 for it new) and it's a superb phone.

Yes the Redmi charged quicker but this isn't really a big deal. Battery life is fine on the pixel.

Was at circular quay train station the other night and took a few snaps of the view. This is where the pixel really stands out, superb quality photos.

    • Nice of you to be gifting to family 😊

I have a Pixel 6a, and whilst battery life is OK agree with slow charging, takes quite a while for full recharge.

      • +8

Nice of you to be gifting to family 😊

Imagine receiving a pixel 7 as a gift then telling the gifter your complaints. FFS some people are oddballs.

    • Have you got adaptive charging turned on?

      • -1

Yes, does it slow down charging?

        • +2

Yes, that's what it does, to prolong battery health.

  • +1

Stack with this for further discount (flybuys points) on jbhifi gift cards.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/789115

  • Wonder if I can use my 150 GC from last time :)

    • u can if its still valid.

if the voucher is good for 2 years use it as a rolling discount

      • Cool, thanks

  • +1

Do you get the bonus if you trade in a phone? I have the Flip4 which I don't really like (very basic camera) and I would like to change.

  • -2

    20% discount better than voucher… !

  • Anyone buying anything with the $200 GC immediately or saving it for later?

  • +8

I can confirm you get 50 voucher in addition to 200 gift cards. I was able to use it all in the same day to make additional purchases. Good deal .Thanks op

Any thoughts on the estimated price of the pixel 8 Pro?

Yeah I know it's not out, but it's going to have a flat display ♥️

So I'm eager to check out

    • +1

Oh I didn't know. Flat screen would be awesome 😎

I stopped following pixel news since I gave up on pixel and sold my pixel 6, reaaallly bad battery life, actually all their flagships' battery life been 👎🏻 ( had all the pixel since 2)
      Pixel 5 was ok though.

Flat screen + good battery life I would crawl my way back to pixel again.

      • Pixel 8 likely to improve, however still tensor processor which I hear isn't great

  • -6

Why so desperate to offer $200 discount unless no one is buying the dreaded spyphone!

    • What?

      What!?

      Lol

      What!?

ALL Android phones run Google Android

So the LEAST LIKELY Android phone to spy on you, would be this one.

Other ones, which also contains Android, would spy on you just as much, but also report back to their manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, LG etc?

    • ozbar definitely not a fan going by his comments

      • Ignore him. He’s been saying this for 5 years, yet also talks about how he’s had Huawei and Samsung phones as if they are safer.

  • +2

Tips for those who do buy this phone: set your phone to Battery Saver mode (a lot more battery life than regular), then in App battery usage (Settings -> Apps), set Clock to be unrestricted as otherwise your alarms won't go off properly.

  • Just FYI, spoke to three separate sales assistants who refused to price match OW price at JB Parramatta.

    • Don’t get your strategy but I would try a different store if I want to speak to 2nd person.

    • did they give any reason?

    • I’m guessing if you want a price match you don’t also get the gift card.
