Samyang AE 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical IF Lens Nikon Mount - $349.35 (Shipped)

10

Do you like Samsung? why not ballin with Samyang as well :)

Samyang/Rokinon/Bower/Pro Optic are the same Korean lens brand

This is a "no frill" lens, all mechanic no autofocus, no image stabilizer/vr/whatevah, well just like it supposed to back in the days.

Deliver great picture and incredible bokeh. With $350 - it's a bargain to have an 85 mm with f/1.4
while Nikon 85mm f/1.4 D(manual) $1200-1500 and auto a whooping $2000!

Lucky for Canon user, this lens cost $314.95

There are cheaper options through Fleabay - particularly if you look for the Rokinon version (meant to be identical).

My son uses this lens. Hard work - but great results when you get it right.

Very positive reviews on lots of sites…

    • Yup they are Identical. As well as any same specced Vivitar's I believe (but they are a lot less common).

And yup this isnt a deal. I can find this price pretty standard anywhere. Sometimes amazon does lightning deals for around $220 with this lens. Havent managed to snag one yet though plus they wont deliver to AU so it makes it harder.

  • Can i use this as a Mug ?

    • Your a mug if you do :p

Manual focusing would be extremely difficult at f/1.4!

    • Disagree… Just need to be more careful or use live view on applicable cameras.

  • heaps cheaper elsewhere….like the Rokinon/Vivitar 85mm f1.4 is exactly the same lens rebadge for $60 cheaper on ebay.

  • I got mine on ebay for $286 including postage. It's a refurb though. No complaints on IQ, all praises. Not perfect (terrible fringing in hard light) but for that price it's quite a bargain.

donut bokeh is only due to mirror lenses, which are what these are. If you look at the cutaway of a mirror lens you will see that the internal mirrors actually blocks out light from the centre hence forming the donut bokeh. Nikon lenses are fully lens manipulated, ie no mirrors hence there will never be donut bokeh.

If anything, the group name is from nikon cameras using mirrored lenses. Donut bokeh is lens specific, not brand specific.

The Samyang 85mm f1.4 isn't a mirror lens - IIRC it's a design similar to one of the versions of the Nikkor 85mm f1.4. This lens is known for having smooth, pleasant bokeh, e.g. http://www.flickriver.com/groups/1437990@N23/pool/interestin…, http://www.flickriver.com/groups/vivitar_85_14/pool/interest…

As schwinn says, the donut bokeh is only on mirror lenses - e.g. Samyang's 500mm f6.3, 500mm f8 and 800mm f8 are mirror lenses. They're really obvious - extremely short for very long focal lengths, and there's a mirror in the middle of the front element. An 85mm mirror lens for 35mm format makes no sense because the entire point of a mirror lens is that it reduces the amount of glass, the number of air-glass surfaces and the physical size to reach long focal lengths.

      • Thank you for that. I must retract my comment regarding this lens being a mirror lens then! Sorry for misleading everyone - I did not know that Samyang actually made non-mirror lenses!

  • I love Korean, why not love North Korean as well?

Not a bargain but good deal in terms of a 1.4 lens

  • "why not ballin with Samyang as well"

    English please.

  • Lucky for Canon user, this lens cost $314.95

The Canon version is cheaper because the Nikon version has a chip which means that it will show information in EXIF data and it will meter on the low-end Nikon cameras.

Other brands will generally meter unchipped manual focus lenses on their entire range, so there's no need for a chip in those.

  • WILL GO AWESOME WITH MY D800E

  • I've been resisting buying one of these for a long time - they'd be awesome for portraits (thought my Canon 60/2.8 macro goes alright on an APS-C body).

It'll definitely be interesting if these guys develop some cheap, sharp, large aperture lenses with AF. Could really shake things up :)
