IMPORTANT UPDATE 26 JULY 2023: RE Method 2

OlduBil: "Transfers from foreign bank accounts to our bank accounts in Turkey are not possible".

  • OlduBil is no longer accepting deposits/transfers from foreign bank accounts. Please DO NOT make any transfers into OlduBil (i.e. your Türkiye Mastercard) until further notice!

  • If you already have the funds in OlduBil from a previous transfer, you are free to continue with Method 2. For those wanting to top up your Türkiye Mastercard, please DO NOT initiate any transfers into OlduBil from Wise or Revolut until I have a new update

  • For those who do not have funds in OlduBil and wish to utilise Method 2, I'm afraid this is no longer possible at this point in time. Every transfer done is at your own risk!

Background:

Modern problems require modern solutions. Like Xbox Game Passes, Youtube, Netflix, Discord, Google One, Microsoft 365, relocating (virtually of course) to Turkey is usually the best option, with some methods saving hundreds or thousands of dollars each year added up. The processes below are very easy, just take it slow and you'll get there! Just remember you'll be saving hundreds at the end of the day.

Due to a price increase by Spotify worldwide, my previous guide has expired. But no worries, this guide is now better than ever, and combines the two methods together (Google Pay for those who want to use Australian Cards, or Virtual Türkiye Mastercard for those who can't do the Google Pay method) as well as providing more information on extra plans and family systems. There will be some screenshots throughout the sign-up process for OlduBil(see screenshots in the instructions section) from previous testing - and yes, I can confirm the validity of these methods because I don't spend money for nothing. Most important thing - Türkiye is still very cheap!

Thank you so much for all your support and previous comments (I love reading them)! Any comments, concerns, suggestions or feedback are welcome :)

Instructions – Method #1 via Google Pay (Android Required) – If you want to use your Australian debit/credit card

Note: If you currently subscribe to Google One or any other Google services via Türkiye, then you may already have a Türkiye payment profile in your Google account. If this is the case, you may not need to do Part 1 at all (go straight to Part 2).

If you have an existing Google account and don't want to create a new Google account, simply add a new Türkiye payment profile into your Google account (not ideal for Google accounts where the sole user is an Android user or the family system consists of Android users - see why in the notes section of this post. You can create a new payment profile by following these steps: go to https://pay.google.com/gp/w/u/0/home/settings and clicking the pen icon next to "Country/Region" and a link to create a new profile should pop up. You can then add details for the Turkish profile (If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address).

If you don't have an Android device, and would still like to use your Australian debit/credit card via Google Pay, consider this BlueStacks method by @langh using a PC.

Part 1 – Creating a new Google account

  1. Create a new Google account on your phone.

  2. Delete your Google Play Store cache (this may not be required). If you don't know how to, please see Google's instructions.

  3. Select your new Google account in the Google Play Store app to switch over from your personal account or add it in if it's not there (to do this, click on your top right icon, then click the dropdown next to your account email, then click "Add another account"). Make sure the selected account is your new Google account.

  4. Add a new payment method and select "Turkey" as the country (to do this, click on your top right icon again, then click "Payments and Subscriptions", then click "Payment methods"). If needed, use a fake address generator to obtain a random Turkey address for the payment profile. You can use your Australian debit or credit card (or any card as you wish) and best to use a card with no international transaction fees (Suncorp and Latitude Platinum have no international fees).

Part 2 – Subscribing to Spotify Premium

  1. Boot up the Spotify app and click "sign up" or "log in" with VPN off. If you don't have the Spotify app, download it from the Google Play Store. See link here.

Can I sign up with my Australian Spotify account? - Yes! Simply log in (make sure your current subscription, if any, is cancelled).

  2. Turn on VPN and connect to a server in Türkiye (see Notes section for suggestions) and leave it on for the remainder of the steps below.

  3. Boot up the Spotify app again. Click on the premium tab on the bottom right of the home screen. Select the plan you want. Scroll down to the bottom and make sure the country is set to Türkiye. If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye.

Alternatively, go to your Spotify account settings on a web browser and check what country is selected. If it's Türkiye, you're good to go. If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye. However, you still have to double check on the app again on step 3.

Country dropdown box greyed out? - I bet you have a current Premium subscription running? If so, this will have to finish. You can't make changes to your location while Premium is running.

  4. Click on "Google Pay". Complete the Google Pay confirmation prompt to subscribe. Your debit/credit card should already be preloaded (add one if not). If requested for an address, please use your Australian address (new Spotify accounts - family plan sign-ups).

If you get an error, trying clicking the "change plan" option and re-select your plan. Muck around with it a little… Turn VPN on or off etc.

  5. Fly back home and turn off your VPN. YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

Part 3 - Family Members (Family plan only)

  1. On the main account (plan manager), go to: https://www.spotify.com/tr-tr/account/family/ to obtain an invite link. Ensure the address listed is your Australian address (DO NOT use a Türkiye address)

  2. Get a family member, friend, bf, gf, or whatever person to accept that link. When requested, enter in the same address as listed in Step 1.

Error? "You need to live at the same address? It looks like you’re trying to join Premium Family from a different country. Premium Family is only available for family members that live together. Try again when you’re at the same address."

Simple solution - go to the relevant Spotify account on a web browser and check what country is selected. If it's Türkiye, you're good to go. If it's Australia or another country, connect to a VPN server in Türkiye, then refresh the page, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye. Accept the invite again and it should work. You can turn off VPN after this.

Instructions – Method #2 (If you want to use your Virtual Türkiye Mastercard)

Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard REQUIRED

Please read the following instructions carefully. If you already have a Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard via OlduBil, proceed with the following instructions. If you do not have a Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard, STOP HERE and see how to get one here in the instructions section (Part 1 and Part 2): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784047. I'm in the process of making a wiki page on the Türkiye-based Virtual Mastercard via OlduBil, so stay tuned!

Notes: The Spotify sign up pages may be in Turkish (which is easily navigatable if you have some common sense). Feel free to translate the page to English otherwise.

Part 1 – Subscribing to Spotify Premium

  1. Log in to Spotify (VPN off), or make a new account (VPN off).

  2. Turn on VPN and connect to a server in Türkiye (see Notes section for suggestions) and leave it on for the remainder of the steps below.

  3. Go to the Spotify Premium plans page.

  4. Scroll down and select the plan you want. Proceed to pay with your Turkey-based Virtual Mastercard. If requested for an address, please use your Australian address (new Spotify accounts - family plan sign-ups).

  5. Fly back home and turn off your VPN. YOU'RE DONE! WOOO! Enjoy your savings :)

HELP POINT: Because the popup payment windown cannot be translated to English, here are screenshots of the process in the following order: (1), (2), (3)

Part 2 – Family Members (Family plan only)

ISP Notes (Important)

  • If you currently have a Spotify Premium subscription, simply cancel the subscription and you'll be able to resubscribe via Türkiye. If the current subscription is a family plan, simply cancel the subscription and once you resubscribe via Türkiye (do not let the subscription expire), the entire family system will remain intact and no futher changes will be necessary.

  • Most VPN services will connect to Türkiye, unlike India. Those include NordVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), free Windscribe Chrome extension (recommended), free UrbanVPN Chrome extension (recommended), ExpressVPN, etc. If one doesn't work, use another VPN.

    • If you're using Windscribe and it shows different currencies: keep turning the windscribe on and off. Each time you don't get TL, turn it off and on, then refresh the Spotify sign up page. You'll eventually land on TL. Go to https://whatismyipaddress.com/ each time you turn it off/on and see if you land on Istanbul.

FAQ

Q: Will I need to turn VPN on everytime I listen to Spotify?
A: No! You no longer need to have VPN on every time you use Spotify Premium. VPN is only required for sign up. After sign up, use Spotify without a VPN.

Q: I got charged a different rate compared to the prices on this post. What happened?
A: Due to foreign exchange rates constantly fluctuating, prices will differ by several cents each month

Q: I have an existing Spotify account, can I use the same email?
A: Definitely!

Q: Is signing up to Spotify Turkey going to affect my Spotify library/catalogue?
A: After setting up this sub, you may or may not notice the Spotify catalogue/recommendations may be weird with brand new regional music, etc… but your Spotify catalogue will adjust to what you’re listening to and soon it will look like nothing ever happened

Q: GST/VAT and Tax related questions?
A: Don't worry, there really isn't any tax you need to worry about.

  • I'm on monthly Turkish plan, anyone knows how to pay for a full year straightaway ? Can't find the prepaid options

      • Thank you for insight I'm on turkish student plan hence the issue

  • Ok so paying by Google still in AUD. I'm more worried that Credit card company will block overseas transactions especially paying in Turkish

I have an existing Spotify account non subscriber. So I could follow this without an issue, pay via Google pay?

Also I have to create a new google account just for this to work? I'm guessing not a good idea to use existing Aussie one they will know you are doing this loophole. And location wise they know you are actually in Aus

BTW does anyone know why Google Nest hub 2 allows you to select songs while other devices do not and just shuffle?? On free plan

  • Just got my Oldubil Mcard yesterday following your guides… And about to cancel my $19p/m Amazon Music and $17p/m Netflix plans.

  • +7

I went with Google Pay method. I did everything till the last step and when I clicked on pay with Google Play on spotify, it says "Subscription not available". It says it isn't available in your google play country. However in my google play country (payment profile) i can see it is correctly set as Turkey. On my google play it is also set as the current user (the newly created google account). Can't make it go past that.

      • +1

Hi mate that worked to get past the error. Now i get a your payment cant be completed. Use a different payment instrument or contact us. Any ideas?

      • Wow ok so you need to remove all Google account and profiles on a device. That's crazy that means I need a new device or dump a testing device to do just that creating a Turkish google account

      • +1

also had the "Subscription not available" error. Then removed my primary google account from my device and new error is "Google Play purchases are not supported in your country. Unfortunately you will not be able to complete purchases."

        • Same thing happened to me..

  • +2

Hey there. When i click google play….
I get an error subscription not available. The subscription isnt available in your google play country.
    Im stuck there
    Any help?
    Thanks

    • Me too. Everything set up but seems to be defaulting to my Australian account

    • Hey mate, I was able to fix this by setting up my new account as a completely new user on the device. Then when i checked out it picked up the right profile

      https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2865483?hl=en#z…

      • Thanks mate. Now i have an error with payment :(

your payment cant be completed. Use a different payment instrument or contact us. Any ideas?

      • Having exactly the same problem - made a whole 2nd gmail with another Turkey adress, VPN is on, account is selected in google pay, prices shown in Spotify app are in Turkey, select google pay method… not available in your country

        • I have the exact same issue.

  • Bugger my current premium account doesn't end until the 29th. Hopefully the prices don't change too much in the next 4 days!

    • +1

@DoomTrooper make sure you cancel it so it doesn’t renew

  • +1

Got all the way accept to paying with Google Play. It keeps on defaulting to my Australian main account and says I'm not allowed to go any further. Anyone know how to make it use the new profile?

    • -1

Make sure the VPN is on and set. Use dnsleaktest to confirm.

      • very certain its not the VPN (spotify is showing turkish prices), its google defaulting to main account rather than the new turkish one. I have the turkish one selected in the play store but when trying to pay through spotify it just reverts back

  • +1

Can anyone confirm Surfshark works okay for this?

    • Same here ^
      Surfshark user here too.

    • +1

Try it and let us know? Someone has to do it… I can’t be here doing all the work :)

  • -1

how to pay for 12 months at one go?

    • Didn't you read the deal? :D

      • I did, there are no options to pay for more than 1 month in list

        • Do you see an option “More Payment Options”? @dione

          • @I Smell Pennies: no. maybe because i still have 1 month free trial on my spotify account. let me try that one first and see how it goes when ended

          • +1

@I Smell Pennies: Now I see it, its available in spotify web

  • -4

Lira has almost doubled in the last couple months. Looks like this wont be as cost effective for much longer.

    • +1

doubled???????? looks like halved to me??

      • The rate was previously $1.2 AUD for 1 month of individual shopify its now $2.19

Gotta keep things factual in this game

        • +1

The Lira as a currency has not doubled. The Spotify subscription cost has increased in the last few months

          February price increases for instance:

          Student: 14.99 TL/month (Old price 10.49 TL)
          Individual: 29.99 TL/month (Old price 20.99 TL)
          Duo: 39.99 TL/month (Old price 27.99 TL)
          Family: 49.99 TL/month (Old price 34.99 TL)

          • -5

@Lucille Bluth: I'll take that correction… However it doesn't change the net result, this way of paying for Spotify has doubled in price and it will only get worse. I'm just bringing people back to reality, the people who thought this would last forever.

  • Just also wanted to share If you use an android, and only really need music on phone, (aka not on your watches or TV or smart speaker) then
you should instead look into ReVanced, until it survives. And save 100%. Personally also prefer YT Music over spotify

Nevertheless great effort put up by pennies

  • I can’t find the cancel subscription for family plan, all I see is change plan. Do I need to change to free to do the turkey swap for family?
Or is there a spot I’m missing to cancel?

    • +1

      Change plan to free.

      • +1

        Thank you

      • Once you've changed to free will everyone need to update their address to Turkey I take it and then re add them

  • Can someone please recommend a cheap or free VPN (Türkiye)? I only need it for sign-in the app to make the payment.

    • Windscribe , as mentioned

  • Will they know if my account is Australian (subscribed for free trial a while ago)? Now is still using free account

    • No, it doesn’t matter. But you need to set your account to Turkey to be able to successfully subscribe.

  • Am I wrong to be concerned about my payment details being linked with a dodgy address?

  • Lolz…..and just signed up NordVPN and it doesn’t have Turkish server 😬

    • Have to use obfuscated service for turkey mate, i think it was due to regulation. Been using it for my XGPU

    • It does, I used it just today

  • Damn, My sub just renewed yesterday for another month. Has anyone successfully renewed cancelling existing membership on single plan?

    • I think yes for normal/duo/family, I had problems with Student, had to wait for expiry

  • -3

This looks like too much of a mess around to save $40/year especially at the risk of messing with the current family setup

    • +1

I think you are in the wrong website

      • Nah, I just know what’s worth my time and what’s not.

    • it's a saving of $209 a year on the family plan…

      • Not when you're only paying for 1/6th it's not.

  • Any recommendations for vpn’s that actually work? I’ve tried a few and I’m not having any luck with options to pay in the Turkish currency

  • -3

Wife uses Spotify for work, can't risk there being any problems, if she loses even one play list…Ozbargain loses a member…
Also, my Spotify was hacked once and I still get Indian drum and base recommendations to this day…

    • +1

You won't lose your playlists. However, Spotify will initially change music taste to Turkish music. Maybe not ideal for your wife, given she uses it for work.

    • +1

I take it indian drum and base is not good?

  • Doing option 2.

Logged in, then switched VPN to Turkey. Go to account page and it is in turkish, but prices in AUD. What…?

    • What VPN?
      Also use provided link.

  • i just got a message that the price went up on my spotify app

  • How long does it take to transfer from wise/revolut to oldubil? Are we talking days or is it hours? what are people experience? still waiting for my money to appear on oldubil :(

    • Revolut to Old took me a couple days.
First transfer took 10 hours (Granted Turkish bank open times and weekday), and second took me a couple days (Bc weekend)

    • Wise to Oldubil took me around 6 hours.

Wise charged handling fee (as explained in ISP's post, all expected
But Olddubil also took 10% of the transferred among as well - with some google translate it seems to be some sort of 'commission fee'.

      This feels so wrong..

  • Anyone else not get google pay as an option for payment? I'm only getting credit/debit card when switching over to Turkey in the spotify app.

    • Same here! Looking for a solution! :)

    • +1

Me too. That's why i had to use the turkey mastercard option. If you don't mind creating a new spotify account, the option was there for me. Didn't work for my existing..

    • @jujujuan @Himesama21 See here and here

      • Yeah, I used an existing (spare) Google account with Turkey payment profile. Closed all the app and tried assessing Spotify account page on the browser. Google pay is still not an option. Just made the new turkey account too (last week) and it's already on Family Premium subscription (with all 6 members invited). Just wanna change payment option from the OlduBil CC to Google pay to avoid all the transfer fees and etc, tbh. I'll try again in a few days, but it is not possible, I'll just leave it as is.

  • Using the Wise to OlduBil method, can someone confirm both Wise AND OlduBil both charges handling fee?

  • I've been using Yotube premium/music. Is spotify much better music provider?

    • IMO, yes. I use it much more, with all my playlists stored here.

  • I have an existing Google account and want simply add a new Türkiye payment profile into your Google account but I am a member of an Australia based Google One and YouTube Premium Family account (I am not the account manager). Will adding the new Türkiye payment profile to my Google account or any of the steps above potentially cause me to lose access to my membership in any of these family accounts once it detects a change in my profile location?

    • @WorkingLowJam are you in a Google Family? and if so, does any member (and/or yourself) use an Android phone?

      • Yes, I am part of a Google Family but not the account manager. Also, yes, I (and others) in the Google Family use an Android phone (I also have a spare iPhone though?). I was just unsure if the the notes section of this post still applied if you wanted to use the Turkey payment method while your Google account is part of someone else's Google Family. If that's an issue, then which alternative method would you recommend?

  • +1

I did the Oldubil method when it first came out (thanks ISP), I was just wondering if you send more than the cap what would happen and if you could compensate for the transfer fee from Oldubil when transferring from wise to get somewhere around the full 2750?

    • @BloodRanger thank you. I'm not too sure actually. Good question. To be on the safe side, I don't think it's worth testing this.

      • +1

fair enough, I was just wondering as I was planning on using the Oldubil card for Netflix, Spotify family plan and a couple individual plans for friends and wanted to get as much as I could on the card to avoid further fees. Either way, thank you for all your guides 😊 (Xbox one was a godsend)

        • +1

Haha thank you. Yeah nothing beats the xbox deal, and might not ever see that pricing again for a while, if at all.

For Netflix, I suggest using your Australian debit or credit card via the gift card method. Saves more $$ than using OlduBil.

  • does anyone know how to fix the error "your payment method and country do not match"? thanks

    • Method 1 or Method 2?

      • Method 1. I've done the google account and everything and im on the turkish website but on my profile i cant change the country from aus even with a vpn on. is there a certain way you have to do it on an android?

      • i got the spotify account to say turkey but even then when i try and pay for the premium with my aus card it doesnt work (i did make a new gmail with a the billing set as turkey)

        • This was my experience with method 1. Your Spotify profile will be locked to AU while your sub is still active. That apparently causes the card country not to match. I believe the answer is waiting for the sub to expire and changing country. A hassle for family plan but a price I will pay.

  • "Wise to Oldubil took me around 6 hours"
Unable to transfer from wise to oldubil, can you give me some info please?

  • Do you have anything for a cheaper version of the Australian Financial Review? Thanks

      • I remember there was a post from last year I think that had a cheaper international version of it with a VPN but I can't find the post. But yeah perhaps it has now been changed. I did try a payment with Turkish currency before with one of my Google payment methods but it is basically the same as the Australian price when converted.

      • +1

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/718277 - not sure if still works.

    • +2

Here is the post for Australian Financial Review cheaper deal via VPN. Have not tested to see if still works https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/718277

      • +1

Thanks so much. Hopefully can find a way to get it with Android.

  • For those using the Google Pay method, what comes up on your bank statement when money is taken? Like the merchant / text that's shown

  • +2

Wise to oldu took around 4 hours.

However I’m getting payment failed when trying to purchase Spotify. Vpn is on and country is turkey. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • +1

    Not all capes wear heroes.

  • I read the instruction only provided for family plan. If I signed up for duo plan, when I sent the invite to my partner, do I need to change my address from turkey address back to Aus address before creating the invite? Or I just maintain Turkey address and when my partner receive the invite, he just make sure the address provided is the same turkey address that I used?

    • Your address should always be your Australian address @vinsontan

Just change it back to your Australian one. Follow the same instructions as the one I wrote for family plan.

      • Tried the suggestion but somehow when my wife sign in to her spotify account using PIA VPN and using my pc, and then specify the same australia address, spotify still complain it is different address from the invitee.

  • trying to add a family member and they're getting the different country error. When they go to try this: "If it's Australia or another country, click the dropdown and change it to Türkiye." - there is no option on their drop down except Australia.

Anyone manage to add a new family member?

    • their country must also be turkey im pretty sure, you can do this by turning on a VPN to turkey first and then it should appear
