I'll use this to flush out the old oil

    • Yeah will be doing the same.

  • This is semi-synthetic for those who are wondering. This stuff comes in a grey bottle that says semi synthetic. I pulled them up on this before saying its deceiving showing a gold bottle that says synthetic on the front and they should change their photo online. Still hasn't been changed.

We should create an ACCCC so we can complain about the ACCC to it.

    • -1

Stuff customers are getting is gold color bottle exactly same as website
I grabbed myself one just like 1 hrs ish ago.

Anyway if you wanna complain about color of bottle/ on debate of if it is semi synthetic vs full synthetic EVEN AT THIS Low price of $17.99
Good luck to you, no clue what could satisfy you

      • I've used the silver bottle one and it does the job in an old car. Good price in this day and age

      • -3

@OP. Why not update the title and description to first up accurately describe that it is semi synth.

    • I'm slightly confused. On the gw website it says SYN-X 3000 is fully synthetic. If autobahn is selling this product, how can it be semi-sythetic?

      • +1

Old bottles in silver stated semi synth. New bottles state synth. What has actually changed in the product is not clear though.

        • Ohh as in they're clearing out old product, of the same name, that used to be semi-sythetic?

          Huh that's well confusing lol

          • @incipient: I'm not the best at oils but there's some suggestion that not all full synthetic oils are equal and some semi synth oils can be reclassified as synthetic if they modify the mineral oils as opposed to a true full synth oil. Can read up more on bob is the oil guy website (bitog)

So maybe it's the same product just repacked and relabelled. Either way it's a cheap price in current climate.

      • +1

It doesn't say fully synthetic, you need to read more carefully. www.gulfwestern.com.au/product/syn-x-3000-10w-40/

They renamed 'semi-synthetic' as 'synthetic' and changed the bottle to gold. GW no longer label products with 'semi'.

Fully synthetic is marketed as 'full synthetic' as it has always been (and its the same with other companies).

        • Ooph that's splitting hairs on the definition here haha.

If someone buys a "red car", they expect it to fully red. I would argue that a car with two Red panels is in fact not a "red car", but a "semi red car".

If you really wanted to get tricky, could it not be argued that natural oils, after being blended and treated are in fact now synthetic as they did not occur that way in nature, so are now technically, fully synthetic!

So yeah, unless the industry in a broader move is calling "semi-sythetic" just "synthetic", they're just being deceptive and misusing definitions.

But yeah. It's $18. Pretty bloody good value for locally made decent oil.

    • Thank you, was wondering this. They dance around the wording “premium blend synthetic”.

  • Gulf oil! Oh yeh

  • need a deal on something MB229.5 nearly due for a service!

    • This is also on sale for $34.99, and is MB229.5 compatible. It is full synthetic too.

      • This is 229.51 - low sulphated ash, for vehicles with dpf.. 229.5 preferred without dpf has better anti-wear properties. Appreciate the link tho.

        • What model Mercedes do you drive?

        • This is recommended for MB 229.31, 229.51, 229.52, 226.5, which pretty much covers most late model Mercedes, so if you want to spend more, go ahead, but you are wasting your money. This will be more than good enough.

          • @billy_bob: The 229.5 isn't more expensive usually, it does contain more anit-wear additives. Engine is a om642, without DPF, manufacturer recommended oil for this engine without DPF is 229.5
Its a closed case mate. 229.5 is better oil - IF you don't have a DPF filter.. (which I don't.. anymore)

  • I'm seeing different answers on my Google search, but do you reckon this'll do for a 2015 Kia Sportage with about 185k kms on the clock

    • Assuming it's a petrol engine you're talking about, unless you have an oil consumption issue I'd be sticking to a 5w30 or a 10w30 if you can't get the former. You don't really want to be using a heavier weighted oil if you don't need to, it'll affect your fuel economy amongst other things.

    • Go for it

Wouldn’t pay too much mind to a jump to 10-40. As long as it meets the required spec from manufacturer, IE SN.

    • Check out the Gulf Western NetLube.

      https://www.datateck.com.au/lube/GulfWesternAus/

Almost all the major manufacturers offer it. Put your make and model in, and it spits out the recommended oil by the oil manufacturer.

For example, gulf western recommends a 5W30 for my LS1.

a 2015 Kia Sportage with about 185k kms

      Yes. It's fine.

I run 10w-40 in the 160k km Accord Euro (I run almost anything under 40 weight that's a good price.

      • Thanks all

        • Did you end up getting this oil?

  • +1

Note this is "synthetic" NOT "full synthetic"

  • Thanks OP. Will stock up with these. Using it for flushing out as well.

  • Use this oil in my quad bikes which get a yearly oil change but only see a few hundred km each year. Better quality oil than the dino oil I used for years, cheaper, and is MA rated- not that MA rating is actually necessary for wet clutches despite manufacturers recommendations.

    Good value here…

    • Curious, why change oil after 1 year if the quad bike has only gone a few hundred k's ?

      • A precautionary measure as oil can begin to break down over time in the engine. Sludge can begin to form, particularly if the engine isnt run long enough to get hot enough to evaporate the moisture that contaminates engine oil.

No need to change oil filter so its a quick drop the oil and refill.
