Ooo yeah that almost makes up for the lower krisflyer transfers. Anyone got some good suggestions on destination redemptions on qatar?

    • +1

      yupe… effective from 4 October 2023

From 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 KrisFlyer Mile

To 3 Membership Rewards points = 1 KrisFlyer Mile

Just saw this in The Australian today.

"Qatar Airways has been refused its application for additional capacity into Australia following opposition from Qantas.

The Middle Eastern airline was seeking to operate an extra 21 flights a week, effectively doubling its capacity into ports such as Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

As part of the application process for bilateral air rights, the federal government sought Qantas’ input late last year.

Despite both airlines being part of the OneWorld alliance, Qantas opposed the bid for more capacity on the basis it was unfair and would result in the loss of Australian jobs."

    • +39

      F2ck Qantas!!

    • +11

Qantas is too greedy, operating old, shaky aircraft and insisting on flying all routes without wanting to share with anyone.

    • +12

4 big banks, 2 big supermarkets… The monopoly continues. We continue to be at the mercy of the price makers.

      • No reason to use the big 4 banks whatsoever..unless you are now stuck in mortgage prison..that the gov should do something about (ie. If you are currently making repayments @ 6%, then nothing should stop you paying 6% elsewhere).

    • +10

Dumb thing is asking a direct competitor. Obviously a competitor would always say no.

      Also, (profanity) QANTAS.

      • +1

Qatar CEO hates Alan and Qantas.

      • -3

No it's not. It's "dumb" to review something but only talk to one side… They didn't ask for Qantas to decide whether or not to allow this, but it would be interesting to see their full rationale.

Even if it was just to "help out Qantas" like a lot of people here seem to think, there is certainly something in ensuring a strong home carrier continues to exist. I don't care enough to fly Qantas myself (I take the cheapest flights and 99% of the time, that isn't Qantas), but becoming reliant on foreign countries to remain connected to the world may not be the best long-term strategy.

    • +9

Weird since Qantas doesn't fly to the middle east. Almost as if they were protecting their business partner in Emirates.

      • -4

It doesn't have anything to do with the Middle East - Qatar focuses on transferring passengers to other regions like Europe (where Qantas absolutely does compete). It has nothing to do with "helping Emirates".

    • +8

Why do something that would reduce prices for Australians?

      Thanks QANTAS!

    • +4

I strongly recommend everyone to write to [email protected] and voice your dissatisfaction. its (profanity) ridic

Enough people email, somethings might change.

  • Received same email on Explorer.

  • What's best current AMEX credit card to sign up for? Was looking at the velocity one but now interested in any one that provides good MR points.

    • +1

Based on spend or bonus? Better to wait for a big bonus. Explorer seems to be the balanced pick

      • Bonus, yeah none of them really exciting at the moment, hopefully a big offer is just around the corner..

  • Does anyone know how long do these Qatar Avios points last for ?
eg. do they expire in tranches like KrisFlyer does?
    (I hate this)

    Qatar redemptions are pretty high,
but the 20% bonus on my accumulated points,
    makes this quite tempting,
(considering St George amplify also changing its KrisFlyer exchange rate after 31 July 2023).

    • +2

      Qatar redemptions are pretty high,

They're not - they offer classic and flexi tickets. 1 way business to Aus from Doha is around 70k normally which is a great deal. 140k for the Flexi tickets - which honestly, at a pinch is quite good as well, though not great. Just gives people flexibility though.

Essentially aim for the classic or saver or whatever they call it.

    • +3

Only expires if there is 3 years of no activity (either by points redemption or accural).
Every time there is activity, another 3 years is added on.

      • That's great to know !

That's the same for Velocity too,
and used to be like that for United Mileage Plus [UMP],
until UMP made their accounts "life long".

    • +1

But you can transfer Avios to BA and to Iberia, I think?

  • +1

whats the seat availability to europe like with qatar? worth it?

  • -1

It's a good deal, buit Qantas rewards are quite stingy to Australia. Not impossible, but difficult.

    • +2

This is with Qatar, one of the ME3 airlines, not QANTAS.

      • All Q’s look alike.

      • +1

I was actually saying QATAR, but my phone autocorrected because I must have misstyped the word.

  • +7

Hoping no one else has this experience, but beware Qatar treats redemption flights like dirt.

We had put tickets cancelled twice for operational reasons, no other explanation, they just refunded the points. So annoying because we had made so many other bookings based on those flights… luckily most were refundable, but we still lost a few hundred per person

    • If you're flying FROM the EU (and not just transitting), check if you're eligible for some refund.

From Australia, i'm fairly certain ACCC has some rules on this especially if you stand to lose money due to a flight cancellation, I just haven't read enough to go down this path.

  • sr, haven't transfer any point in Amex. While on amex portal or Qatar Airways Avios webiste, there is no display of 20% bonus point, if we proceed, how can we know or track?

    • +1

They had a similar offer 2 weeks ago that had 30% bonus. You don't see the bonus until after 2 weeks once the point been transferred across.

      • cheers mate

      • 30% off? Really? I never got an email about that.

          • @nightelves: oh ok, I thought it was for Amex as well, I was like damn i missed out.

            • @lonewolf: If you click on the expired link you can see that Amex was included as part of the 30% bonus transfer.

              • -1

@nightelves: Damn, so how come there was no email about it, or did i miss the email. I wish that heading had Amex in it, I would have avoided going into that thread as the title doesnt mention Amex.

                • @lonewolf: I'm guessing the partnership only came into effect after the promo?

                • @lonewolf: Nah, you're good (unless you have a French or Indian American Express account). It didn't apply to Australia.

      • +1

I hope you are right because I transferred and used the points yesterday! Even so, 42500 points for one-way to Europe was a pretty good deal I thought.

        • 42.5k points on QR to Europe ?
          Wow…that is pretty good.

          • +1

@whyisave: Yes. To clarify I mean 42500 Avios for economy.

            • @woolton: How much did they charge you for taxes & fees on top of the 42.5k points?

  • No good! More competitions for those sweet QSuite seats.

    • You never know, and there is no guarantee that you will fly in the QSuite until you step through the door."

      • True, though they tend not to swap out aircraft at the last minute on Australian routes. Common on other routes though.

        • I didn't get Qatar-ed, but I had the opposite experience. They switched to QSuite at the last minute for my flight from DOH to SGN last month.

          • @T-man: Did you book an awards ticket to Sgn?

            • @nightelves: Yes, I used Velocity points. There are two flights to SGN every day.

        • I've never flown Qatar Qsuites but I have flown their business multiple times. 3 of those times qsuites was supposed to be on the route - get to the plan and bam, bad surprise with the standard reverse herringbone.

  • Anyone know then if it's targeted, or available to all transfers?

  • +1

I m about to cancel my Amex when they sent me the new policy to Singapore airline

    • Were you thinking of replacing it with something else? If so, what do you have your eye on?

  • +1

    2 MR points = 1.2 Avios point

    I thought it's 1 MR = 1.2 Avios and got excited for a second

What’s the best routes to check out for redemptions from Brisbane?
Europe seems to be the clear winner, but any Asian countries now that KrisFlyer will be devalued.

  • Hello,
What is the point expiry policy?
Is it better point rewarding system then Asia mile and Krisflyer?
    Thank you

    • Google is your friend - "Your Avios stay with you as long as you collect, spend, buy or share at least one Avios every 36 months — any longer and your Avios will expire and be removed, so remember to take action before those three years are up. There are lots of simple ways to ensure you'll never lose the Avios you collect."

So this is basically the same as Velocity and Qantas in Australia which is far better than Krisflyer which have a hard 36 month expiry with an optional paid 6 month extension.

I did the math a couple weeks ago and it was around 90k points one way to Europe with Avios vs 120k points one way to Europe with Krisflyer. That means Avios is basically 3/4 of the cost, and with the upcoming Krisflyer redemption being devalued, it'll make Avios a clear winner.

If you want to travel in Asia, I think Krisflyer still works out the better option (but definitely get your points xfer'd before the 3:1 devaluation).

      • A bit Thank you Nathan. Since Qatar is one world, do you think it has better value than Asia mile?
In terms of point value and number of reward sits availability?

        • I haven't researched Cathay miles recently, but from the small research I was able to do there seems to be some okay deals available when booking with different airlines via the Cathay miles redemptions, but availability also seems to be an issue as well.

All of this really depends on where you want to travel. A good site to do research from is Point Hacks.

      • +1

Hi. How do you get 90k business? I can only see 180k one way business on qatar website..

        • They have 2 levels - limited vs higher availability. They double the cost for the higher availability redemptions. You'll find the 90k availability is typically only offered for off season/shoulder tickets.

  • +1

Anyone transferring their points to KrisFlyer before Oct? Huge difference being 1 point more.

    • I think Im gonna do it

  • Sydney Santiago flights are almost 20% more expensive with Avios than with Qantas & Asia miles. While Sydney Brisbane is cheaper - 12k return.

  • +1

Hi, anyone tried the point transfer?
When can I receive the bonus point?
I’ve transferred 5000 amex yesterday and only received 2500 avios today.

    • the term says "All bonus Avios earned will reflect in the Eligible Participant’s Privilege Club account up to 45 days after the end of the Campaign Period.". let me know when you receive it

  • I have never brought tickets using points or upgraded ..so newbie..

Could someone guide me where all I can use Qatar via business/ first from Melbourne? Of course needing least ponts ;)

Also happy to book economy and try upgrades using Avoid points if an option..

Any advice welcome. Thanks in adv

  • Hey guys, I had a look for seats to europe mid next year on the Qatar website and I couldn't see any classic awards seats. I could only see flexi tickets which are twice the price. There was previously some availability there so it looks to have been pulled.

You might have more luck than me but I would definitely recommend checking availability before transferring any points over.

    • Probably partly due to the 2024 Olympics in Paris

  • Anyone got their bonus points yet?

  • Dear hive
    still confused@@

    Options:
    1) Transfer Amex pts to KrisFlyer?

    2) Transfer Amex points to Qatar Avois and gain 20% bonus?

    3) Transfer to Velocity and gain 20 % bonus points?

    What would people do?
I am thinking 2) is best followed by ? 3); especially as further accumulation of Kris Flyer shall be hard..

    • +1

IMO use Qatar now. Keep accumulating Avios, and you'll be able to transfer them to BA/Iberia for far better deals than Qantas can offer.

      • Makes complete sense @JohnHowardsEyebrows.
This is what I was thinking too..Also looks like velocity points and Qatar Avois could used interchangeably. Not sure 100% though

    • It's getting really hard to find award space on Qatar now.

  • Hey guys, if I mainly fly to Asia from Sydney, (occasionally wouldn't mind going to England but for the most part that doesn't happen anymore). Is it worth me transferring here or just keep using it for krisflyer?

  • Has anyone bought this to transfer to BA?

    • I've not made the transfer yet, but was easy enough linking the accounts.

    • what is BA?

      • +1

        British Airways.

  • Just transferred all MR to Avios. The transfer was instant. Then moved them to BA. Nice!

  • Has anyone received their bonus avios? I transferred on 2 Aug and still haven’t received the 20% bonus
