best battery charger…..loving mine….(not literally….that'd be positively shocking news)
With a post like that, you're bound to get a negative response!
lol :)
Great charger, however the button keep failing. this is the 2nd one i have where the button stopped working.. their are hacks on google to replacing the button, however i dont buy them to hack them open when the button stopps working..
Bought in $89 Repco Deal 3.5 years ago.
Buttons haven't been a problem.
Which button?
the mode button that switches from car to bike to something else.. mine is stuck on car at the moment.
See : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEDCuIxRT0M
Oops - there is only 1 button.
Best to use switches, which I just did.
Am used to repairing electronics, but better if things don't fail!!
Similar buttons are used in a lot of equipment. One in my doorbell repeatedly needs attention.
Mine is only used on car.
That button is also used to recondition battery. Just put on that setting.
@INFIDEL: i used to work in electronics (design, and r&d) so changing the switch is very easy..
only catch is the box is glued shut.. so no way of opening.. unless you cut it open.. i guess you can reglue, but would look dodgy
@tsandu: 5 year warranty is best option.
But a switch that doesn't fail is always better! It's about the cheapest component!
Designing requires a different skill set to repair, but understanding how things are made can help in approach to repairs.
Heat gun to glued seam usually helps in opening. And putting in vice to apply pressure to crack seam. A usual approach when pry tools aren't good enough for plug packs etc.
Looks wouldn't worry me… I rarely see it. Came with free rubber bumper which would hide a repair.
Thanks for vid.
Charger has been almost always on for 3.5 year. So button rarely touched.
Have a very old car that belonged to my Father. Rarely used.
CTEK has kept it going, car starting first go.
Nico or norco brand is my go to charger. But a little expensive..
I use my MXS5 on my bike constantly and car occasionally. Had the button fail. Stick on the one setting.
Had it replaced as clearly faulty. I shouldn't have to be playing around with electrics to use something that should just work. New one is working ok, but if I had a choice at the time, I would have gone to an upgraded lithium charger too.
I used one of these in the "RECOND" mode to bring a dead battery back to life and was extremely happy with the results.
Does anyone know the difference between this one in the post and this one?
https://www.amazon.com.au/CTEK-Multi-Battery-Charger-CTEK-56…
Is it worth the extra money for this one?
one does max 5amp, the other one does 7 amp, so will be maybe 30% quicker to charge a battery up.. is it worth twice the price.. hmm depends how often you use it..
Thanks mate, not worth the extra price just to be able to charge a bit quicker for me :)
Would go for NOCO Genius 10 instead: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08D6W3K1L
10 AMP over 7, supports AGM and Lithium. in addition to lead acid.
Personal preference: prefer cables coming out from one side than both side dangling.
NOCO (American brand) is just as reputable as CTEK (Swedish brand).
A great charger if you already have one.
But sort of old tech, would look into GOOLOO or NOCO if buying one now.
What will the newer ones do differently? I need one of these to recharge a car battery that has recently been run flat (lights left on) but am not sure which to choose
be carefull with gooloo, they may say 10amps on the box, however the people that reviewed them have said that max of 2 amps was used, not once did it push 10 amps.. NOCO on the other hand have bad reviews on the getting bad battery going again.. seems ctek works okkay, just their button issue lets them down.
There are cheaper battery chargers and have good reviews too, are they no good for example https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07XYV4R1B/ref=ox_sc_ac…
Hmmm that does look good and looks like it has a "Repair" option. The biggest thing for me is to have the ability to bring batteries back to life as often my cars and motorbikes will sit there for months and I'm not able to constantly leave them on trickle charge.
Just noting that all the chargers that look like this one you linked that say they support LiFePO4 will only charge LiFePO4 at about 1.6A - 2A.
Because of this, they're definitely inadequate as a secondary/tertiary on-the-go charging solution for LiFePO4 camping battery+fridge setups.
Would I buy this if I wanted a trickle charger? Heading overseas for 3-4 weeks
Yes. And it's not just a constant trickle (overcharge), it has up to 8 steps. The last being like a monitor state where it sends a pulse charge to keep the battery topped up.
Have a very old car on this charger for last 3.5 years. In my case, charger plugs into connector outside car near.battery.
Car is rarely used, but starts first time, every time.
Bought it for 4+ week trips overseas.
Previous trickle charger failed while overseas, requiring expensive battery replacement!
Yes, I used this on a motorcycle with the included pigtail, before further retiring the bike and using on a car I have laid up. Overall, lasted more than 10 years as a battery tender. Button not an issue if not changing modes all the time. Mine has given up now and was looking for a replacement, so will go the same again.
Seems like a great deal. Alright really amateur question here but can you charge your car battery with this if the car battery terminals are still connected, or best to disconnect the terminals before using the charger?
No need to disconnect the terminals to charge
thanks Snapper.
Have car almost permanently attached to this charger. Just unplug outside car near battery to drive.
Yes! I sometimes connect mine to the remote terminals under the bonnet or the battery in the boot directly.
And I know dozens, and dozens, and dozens of other car enthusiasts that have done it this way for years too.
Better price than when I bought mine in 2015 ($98). Still works well to keep my car battery (lead acid) running/charged. As others have said, there are newer models that work with Lithium batteries… depends on your likely usage.
Any recommendations for a good jump starter?? (For cars). Probably looking for something around $150 or less if I can…
The Noco BoostX GBX45 looks ok?…: https://www.amazon.com.au/NOCO-GBX45-UltraSafe-Powerbank-6-5…
Just went down this path for a car I don't drive much anymore and gives me battery issues.
For those interested, bought the BM2 bluetooth battery monitor from Aliexpress ($25) so I can easily periodically check the battery voltage.
Also bought 10 amp bluetooth Victron smart charger ($147 recent Ebay sale). I've connected the eyelets permanently and exposed the quick connect plug in boot.
It's great to have the controls/monitoring on the phone. It's all working well.
Sidenote; Aliexpress have really stepped their game up re postage. Their '15 day delivery' is getting to Perth in about 9 days.
Out of curiosity. Does the battery monitor draw much current itself? Sounds like it could be handy.
Good question. I looked it up - "It consumes about 1mA; 1 Milliamp, or 0.001 amps. It can remain attached to a healthy auto battery for weeks, drawing much less power than car alarms". I haven't noticed anything untoward.
On clearance at Repco in a kit that includes the indicator eyelet ($19.95) and carry bag @ $111.20:
https://www.repco.com.au/globes-batteries-electrical/battery…
Bought similar kit for $89 3.5 years ago.
Find the indicator eyelet, attached to battery & fed outside car, is very handy. Has rubber cover to protect it when driving.
Drive into garage, plug into lead, can then see state of battery voltage on indicator LEDs.
Yep, such a good piece of kit.
Mine had no carry case (don't need as permanently installed), a few handy leads, rubber bumper to protect charger, & novelty CTEK battery bank…
@INFIDEL: I remember this kit, sadly I missed out on it. I think I'll pick this one up from Repco as I'm sick of disconnecting my AGM
@brommo: Repco CTEK Kit Nov 2019
@brommo: Kit's indicator eyelet has longer leads, which I fed outside car. Connector has rubber cover to protect it.
Otherwise included eyelet connector lead is much shorter!
Need to access near battery to connect / disconnect. A pain!
Glad don't have to open bonnet every time want to drive & return car!
Crazy $184 @Repco! Recently $99
But same charger is included in Repco CTEK 12V 5 Amp Battery Charger Value Pack with useful longer voltage indicator lead & carry case - brommo's comment
repco has this
https://www.repco.com.au/globes-batteries-electrical/battery… at $88 while amazon is $140+.
From my quick google search, that one is better for battery with start/stop feature.
But someone called out that being a marketing only. https://www.carguide.ph/2017/04/ctek-ct5-startstop-is-must-f….
Like its best-selling MXS 5.0, which has an 8-step charging process, the CTEK CT5 START/STOP delivers a charge rate of 5 amperes per hour, enough for most cars and SUVs. Unlike the MXS 5.0 though, it delivers a higher voltage of charge required by deep cycle or EFB batteries.
anyone knows which one is actually better?
Designed for different use.
Maybe discuss in…
CTEK CT5 Start/Stop Battery Charger - 40-166 $88 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ Repco
This thing is fking amazing. Saved us so much hassle, haven't had a flat since as most of the cars don't get driven much.
This or Gooloo 10A for $71.99
I needed one last week, so got one used on marketplace for $85.
So now I have a new one and a used one…
Cheers OP!
