Gaggia Descaler 250ml 5 Bottles for $50 Delivered @ Segafredo

20

I needed some descaler for my Gaggia Classic Pro. This seemed like a pretty good deal. The next cheapest I could find was Harvey Norman, which was $72.95 incl delivery.

Please note you must add 5 bottles to the cart to get the discounted price.

  • Do you really need this in Aus? What if you use filtered water?

    • +2

Yes! Check your heating element, or have a look inside your kettle. Filtered water is not ion free btw.

If it is RO filter you will be good 👍

If not install a 5 stage under your sink 😆👍

Yes you so, a lot of the water is pretty hard. Gaggia boilers are different too ( brass I think?).

I spoke with someone at shades of coffee and he said the brita filtered water doesn't really help as far as scale prevention (but tastes better to drink). Better to do some maintenance or be up for a fair few repairs later.

Pretty sure you can just order one at HN and get go Pick up, think the last one was 13$.

PS. Last time I just used half a bottle, a whole one seems a bit excessive.

      • I believe Gaggia boilers are aluminium. The Gaggia branded descaler has an additive designed to protect the boiler during descaling.

Some say pure citric acid based descalers are not recommended for aluminium boilers — but of course opinion varies.

Home water filters, while helpful (I use one myself) do not filter out calcium, which is one of the main things that cause scale to build up.

        • Ah yeah that's it, aluminium. I got the pre-2015 model before they messed with it

Cool that confirms what I heard then re: filtered water - I just put tap water in now, given it doesn't help, and just make sure try and desxale every one or two months.

          Cheers.

My wife exhibits various reptilian qualities. I hope this works on her.

    • Provided you are hot enough, she shouldn’t go cold on you

I buy bags of citric acid.

    • What any ozbargainer would do. No deal here whatsoever.

    • You just got citric acid in my eye…
      You'll pay for that Springfield!

    • Can we get this from colesworth or bunnings?

      • +1

Yes, baking aisle, not the cheapest version though. Iga and other green grocers may have on spice bags.
        ~$2-5 a pack

        • Thanks whodis. Need to clean the Nespresso machine so do I just mix in water n run it til the reservoir empties then rinse

I use Breville's Eco Liquid Descaler 1 litre is for $34 on Amazon. Not sure if it does the job or not as I cannot see inside the machine but first round of descaling process white residue comes out then all clear water.

  • Depends what brand machine you have. Should use Gaggia for Gaggia boilers (or puly caff/baby)

    https://www.roastycoffee.com/clean-gaggia-espresso-machine/

Also need some granular powdered stuff to remove coffee build up/stains too ,it's a different process.

  • Use Cafetto powder. You can buy it off Amazon. 1kg is about $25 and lasts forever.

You dont need to buy brand specific descalers.

Theres filtered water and theres filtered water. Theres a difference between the little Brita water filters that are in a jug, and a Brita C150 Finest that myself and many others use. Ive never had issues with scale using water from my C150 in any coffee machine or iron.

To help reduce scale in dual boilers, make sure you regularly use the water in the steam boiler. That is, make sure you use the hot water tap to dump water from it. I often pre fill cups with hot water from the machine to heat them up. Reason being: every time you use the steam wand, you are distilling water from the steam boiler, thus increasing the concentration of minerals in the boiler.

    • So confirming the brita jug filters do nothing to prevent scale?

I've had that stuff for years, A rapidly soluble and free-rinsing formulation that removes coffee oils, grounds, and stains. Use puly card, similar stuff.

Slightly different to descaling so I believe you need both.

      • Brita jug filters may reduce scale, but would be better than nothing

Cafetto make a descaling powder as well. And you do need a cleaning powder, which you should use regularly.

        • Cheers, I may as well use the brita water like i was anyway then, also got it for drinking water.
No worries - was just pointing out that one powder doesn't really do everything. For the Gaggia I should probably get more of these Gaggia descaling liquid, as purly baby isn't as easy to get as in the UK.

It's worth trying to maintain the machine - I let it go a year or two back the grouphead was almost completely blocked. I replaced and upgraded to a stainless steel dispersion plate, IMS Nanotech Mesh Shower Screen & silicone gasket which make it a lot better

Also had to replace the water pump quite a while back (maybe unrelated).
