Hi, I've seen on ozbargain, people recommending getting the Smart Oven Air Fryer, as opposed to the regular Smart Oven. However I read some reviews, and I see people mentioning that the air fryer function is terrible, and it's impossible to clean. Do they just not know how to use it, or are they genuine issues with it?
Breville Smart Oven Vs Smart Oven Air Fryer?

I already have a decent dedicated air fryer. I'm mostyl going for a benchtop oven to replace my old one. But if it had an air fryer mode, it'd be a nice bonus.
I have the Smart Oven with the Airfryer functionality and yes, it's not easy to clean inside after each use (although I don't have a lot of previous appliances to compare to).
I've had it for almost two years and I'm almost ready to throw it out and buy a new one.Given that "air fryer" is little more than a clever marketing term for a convection oven, usually small, what is the difference?
I guess the regular one doesnt have a fan, and the air fryer one does?
Nope, regular has a fan.
What I've noticed is the fan on an air fryer is much stronger than one in a fan forced oven. If I put a slice of cheese on some bread in the air fryer it blows the damn thing off and all over the place.
@yippy: Maybe not stronger fan, but the fan has to move air around a smaller space so it is more effective. A fan on a normal oven is equal to like 20 degrees more temperature, so it's no slouch.
Does the air fryer one have a higher max temp?
No

Wouldn't say that it's just purely marketing - air fryers are really a mid-point between a traditional convection oven and a deep fryer.
I’ve got the regular Smart Oven Pro, and absolutely love it. The house we bought has a large freestanding oven which takes forever to heat up and doesn’t seem to hold temperature well, so we didn’t often use it - bought the Smart Oven and use it all th time, most often for the Slow Cook function. Wouldn’t be without it.
yeah I do want a good oven. That's the main thing I'm after. But I remember seeing an ozbargain thread where everyone was recommending the air fryer one instead. Apparently it's the same, but with more functionality.
Yes, I think the Smart Oven wth the air fryer function was the model after the one I bought. At first I thought oh damn, should have waited, as I’d been thinking about getting an air fryer but ended up buying a cheapie one on clearance at Woolworths. To be honest, I hardly ever use the air fryer so I don’t think I missed out :) .
I have one with air fryer. Never use the air fryer mode as the results aren't great. All it does is it seems to change fan speed which you can do in roast mode. However, as a smaller oven, toaster, reheat etc it's awesome. Cleaning is a pain though. Wrapping the pull out drip tray with foil will save some cleaning time.
I have the air fryer version and use it all the time. I get really good results from the air fryer setting, using it to both cook and reheat. As others have pointed out, cleaning it is very difficult.
Sorry to revive an old thread, but can anyone comment on how hot the outside of these units get during operation?
I’m looking to get one to put in a van, but wanted to build it into a cabinet and was wondering if that’d be doable or not? Also, this or the Ninja foodi XL 10 in one?
CheersThe exterior does get quite hot, and you certainly wouldn't want to touch it. The manual that came with ours states that you need to keep a minimum distance of 10cm of space on both sides and 15cm above. I assume a similar clear space would apply for the back of the oven as well.
I had originally intended to use ours in a space left by the wall oven we'd removed, but given the clearance they recommend and how tight the space was, I just store it in there, and put the oven on a wooden board on the benchtop when using it.
I would recommend the Phillips air fryer, it’s easy to clean as the tray slides out and is removable.
