I like driving.. I have manual, performance cars… it seems most of ozbargain is trying to work out how to 'not' drive at all costs. I just don't get it.

      • +5

Because it a chore to drive sometimes. Imagine you work the graveyard shift and have to work somewhere far to your house. You are red eye dead tired because you have responsibility as a parent, for the safety of yourself and others you have a need for this feature.

        • +2

Probably shouldn't be on the road whatsoever. Assistance systems are no substitute for full concentration and reflexes.

          • @Techie4066: Yeah i know but some people don't have a choice on working night shift jobs due to their restrictive availability and how far their work is. Mortgage and kids expenses are non-negiotable in life.

      • +2

I've got family in Canberra and Melbourne, I rather not drive the 9 hours each from Sydney to Melbourne and back.

        • Quite the player just like Elon :)

      • Because in Australia over 1,000 people a year die in car in accidents (in the US it's over 40,000). Human's aren't great at driving - we get distracted, can only look one way at a time, and our cars can't talk to other cars and traffic devices. The sooner we get humans out of cars and let computers run it the better. Then you can really start to enjoy your manual performance cars - on a track or somewhere purpose built for fun. Even now, does a 110kmh speed limit really allow for a lot of fun?

        • Agree with you 100%. Just don't think Tesla will get us there first.

I suspect the Tesla truck will be available in Oz before they get L5.

        • Going to the track is fun - but on a daily basis I have cars that are enjoyable at regular speeds… so… yes.

      • -1

Gotta' love how this comment was downvoted 4 times because of an observation / different opinion to those 'other' people ..ahhh ozbargain

        • its because Mortal Krumpet goes out of their way to show that they have no ability to empathise. Not everyone likes 'manual performance cars' and if MK had to drive a long commute in traffic daily they'd also want to sell their manual car for something that can drive itself.

          • -1

@Keplaffintech: LOL - try assuming some more. OR something that has nothing to do with what you wrote haha

      • +1

        hobby vs transport

      • I enjoy driving too. Manual is much more fun, auto is nice for casual stuff or more "commute" driving/heavier traffic.

I'd like to have a self driving system - as an option, not for every drive. Similarly I'd like to be able to have a manual (with clutch) that can switch to an auto in traffic.

If it were 100% self driving, I think I'd miss driving myself - I realise I miss it when I get back from a long holiday and finally drive myself again.

      • I think it's useful for elderly people to go to their doctors appointments without their children having to drive them.

    • Or make it monthly subscription

  • +19

Can't wait to buy a car and have to purchase DLCs in the future. Nice.

    • +2

Just be broke like me, and only buy cars without any features to unlock in the first place

      • You can upgrade most cars….

    • +2

Dlc? In your dreams. Welcome to the world of subscription based features.

      • +4

We need Turkish VPN subscription more than anything and pray their economy keeps tanking lol

        • In other news, the vast majority of cars are now registered under a turkey flag of convenience.

      • +1

Unlocked from server end too im guessing. No chance of plugging in via OBD port and unlocking the feature yourself, which I did on my Renault and got android auto working :)

        • that's awesome. was it locked because you didn't opt to pay for it?

          • @GenghisGun: Was offered as a $480 upgrade. However apple car play did not work as its lacking the chip for that however the feature was unlocked in the console too.

    • Except there's alot of bugs and prone to hacking even with the subscription. Better to take your car off the net and jailbreak the software so you can have full autonomy and access to it's features.

    • Stupid BMW are making people subscribe for heated SEATS!!!

How reliable is the auto pilot at night and in bad weather? It kinda freaks me out they only rely on cameras and no sensors.

    • +2

Having had access to EAP over the holiday/new year break last year I got to experience it enough to know I don't need to buy it. But Night didn't seem to pose too much trouble, even on unlit roads, the cameras had some funky sensors that make them more suited to CV rather than a pretty picture for humans. However, heavy rain (or a well placed dead bug/bird poo) will cause the driving assists to be disabled.

Under no circumstance would I ever want to take my eyes off the road/take a nap with this driving. All that EAP does is change lanes for you and poorly self-park some times, the standard Auto Pilot is enough for most users.

    • Its sh*t in bad weather.
It can't cope at 110 and will first reduce the speed to 80 then cancel entirely.
Ever since they got rid of radar its been bad.

    • +3

Wouldn't that be the same way you rely on your eyes to drive?

      • +1

“Currently, the best cameras on the market have a dynamic range of around 15 stops on average. However, the human eye can perceive a whopping 21 stops of dynamic range. ” and ~ 300 Mpixels (counting eve micromovements) and an actual brain to process it.

    • +1

I’ve never had autopilot disengage in night. It’s worked flawlessly. In very very very heavy rain it has disengaged only 1-2 times in like 2.5 years of driving. It has been solid. FSD however has nearly driven me off the road on one occasion which was enough to put me off FSD for a while.

      • FSD beta isn’t available in Australia yet though, right?

        • I used FSD in the sense of enhanced autopilot with on ramp to off-ramp driving.

          • +1

@kipps: Ah ok, thanks for clarifying. Actual FSD looks very impressive on US roads so I wonder when it will eventually be released here.

  • +4

    I don't have any friends 😪

    • +3

Come visit my wife and I tomorrow night. We will organise your transport home and you'll need to sign a waiver. All good?

      • Oh daddy!

        • +2

We will take that as a yes. You ok with restricted spaces? How about, ummm, let's call it a leather ski mask with a zip. Our driver will pick you up at 8. We're excited!

  • +11

Enhanced autopilot isnt even worth it.

    • what you even get for Enhanced Autopilot?

      • +2

        You get the following.

        • Navigate Autopilot
        • Auto lane change
        • Auto park
        • Summon
        • Smart Summon

All pretty useless and/or they don't work very well. NoA is actually dangerous to use. I tried it twice during the trial period over Xmas and it couldn't negotiate a simple exit from the motorway without scaring the hell out of me.

Just don't ask whether enhanced autopilot is worth it to people who paid for it. They will argue until their last breath that it's worth it LOL

        • To be honest, auto park would be awesome for my wife.

She can't parallel park at all. This would make street parking much more accessible for her.

          • @scphotos: Unfortunately, Tesla's auto park is one of, if not the worst, in the industry. Same goes for their auto wiper.

            • @keejoonc: How about auto headlights?

Fan Bois be trusting their life on a car that can't get the auto lights or wipers right.

              • @Naigrabzo: No issues with auto headlight. Saying auto wiper is a risk to life is far fetched. My issue with tesla auto wiper is the fact that it's far too eager and sensitive which results in way too many wipes than necessary.

                • @keejoonc: Auto matrix headlight? If they can't get the auto wiper working how do they get auto drive.

          • @scphotos: There are plenty of cars you can buy with auto park as a standard feature

            • -2

@spaceflight: None work that well though. To be fair. Tesla however market it the best using their fanbois as free labour. It's clever because the fanbois read or see a video online and think it's gospel.

Don't get me wrong as I do like the Tesla overall. Their silly AUTO PILOT is just a joke.

  • +2

Recent discounts suggest they're desperate to clear stock before the onslaught of affordable EVs about the enter the market

    • +2

The onslaught hey? That onslaught has been coming for the last three or four years, still not here.

Tesla is ramping up production at a furious rate, it often prices cars according to demand. Tesla has a huge profit margin so can easily afford this, legacy automakers can’t.

Legacy automakers vary prices all the time. Look at the “offers” and special deals that used to proliferate. Now most car makers are having trouble with production due to supply chain issues. Not Tesla.

The smarties, tech enthusiasts and early adopters are also waiting for the Highland cars which are still months away,

      • More like the onslaught of cheap Teslas, sales turn down in China means plenty of cheap model 3 capacity looking for a home.

        • Maybe but production is increasing rapidly and the cars are being sold.

Tesla stock just ripped up in price because it surprised the market with robust production and sales.

So if there is a problem coming for Tesla they haven’t reached it yet.

Tesla 2nd quarter results just released, best quarter ever of sales.

I think they are clearing stock and making way for th 2024 Model 3 (facelifted).

  • +8

I'll wait for Zucks offering. Will call it Treads. Probably.

    • +3

Elon truly is an innovator - first and only person I know that makes Zuck appear relatively likeable.

    • +1

You are without doubt the champion of Friday. Probably

    • Zuck doesn’t want to make you a car, he just wants to know where you drive to, and what you did there, and who you spoke to, and what you bought, and what you were thinking at the time.

      You know, stuff like that!

  • Wouldn't mind 10,000 referral credits, just added my referral link to the Wiki!

  • +1

i recently ordered via referral. It would have been real good if it applied to inflight orders

    • +1

I stand corrected. Tesla just send me an email saying it will apply to my order. I am starting to like Elon

      • I thought the same when I saw this earlier, and just got an email and text confirming it would be applied to my order from early June. Looking forward to testing out EAP when my car arrives. This, combined with the recent price drop, makes it almost $5k cheaper than my original order price

        • Not to mention FBT benefit via novated lease

          • @mrTT: Anyone wants to get $750 discount, DM me.

  • +7

FSD sounds like a scam, at some point they are going to say that you need a newer model with improved cameras.

    • +1

The magic beans are expensive, but if you don't buy today they will cost even more tomorrow!

I will wait until it is a standard car feature. Glad that some people are willing to pay to be a beta tester.

    • +4

I've been following this and imo It has been a scam since its launch. It's impressive yes but no where close to being "full self driving" and claims to be in "beta" as an ongoing marketing tool to make potential owners feel like one day they will get a fsd car.

The fact that Elon wants to move away from radar/lidar and only rely on cameras alone, which are inaccurate in many situations including when rain, dirt, direct sunshine etc are involved, is proof that his aim is cost cutting and marketing and not real innovation towards a usable self driving vehicle.

You're correct that the current cameras on the cars being sold are outdated and poor quality. Easy to see in their dashcam footage. Updating the hardware would mean either developing software for two different technologies or abandoning old models and piss off thousands of people who "invested" in their FSD package and also spending more money on better tech. Both of which eats into profits and goes against their sales models.

      • The hardware has already been updated with HW4 this year? With higher resolution cameras and processing power.

    • I wouldn't even consider becoming a beta tester for Full Self-Driving even if there were financial compensation offered.

Upgrading infrastructure to support FSD capabilities will take years.
Implementing the necessary changes to roadways, signage, communication systems, and other infrastructure elements
can take a considerable amount of time. I cant see FSD is fully embraced anytime in the near future, probably not even in my lifetime lol.

      • Upgrading infrastructure for Full Self-Driving (FSD) does not require massive changes. Tesla’s FSD technology is designed to work with existing roadways and infrastructure. It relies primarily on onboard sensors, cameras, and advanced neural networks to interpret the road environment, minimizing the need for extensive infrastructure modifications.

Tesla’s FSD system is continually improving through the use of neural networks. These networks learn from vast amounts of real-world driving data, allowing the system to refine its capabilities over time. This iterative learning process enhances the performance of FSD without relying on significant infrastructure changes.

        • "When people are willing to pay a fortune to make my dream a reality, it truly becomes a dream come true." E.Musk 2023.

No matter how Musk is selling it, I refuse to stake my life on this technology lol

        • I suspect it is going to fail though. The experiment has already failed given the length of time it has been BETA.

Just need to accept and move on. Need to think out of the box.

    • "FSD" is fine with HW3 and doesn't rely too much on the new higher resolution cameras. The problem with Tesla's vision-only approach is that human intervention will be required when cameras get blinded by sun, dirt or heavy rain. Even the Cruise and Waymo cars in SF frequently require human intervention by remote operators.
It is possible that this is all "FSD" can do. Which means it works well in 99.9% of all driving situations. There will be that 0.1% that always require human intervention.

Robotaxi versions in the future may have options for remote interventions and probably some additional cameras as well.

  • +4

Damn good increase to the referral scheme. Hoping my link finally comes up on here haha. Would love to order a wall connector. Honestly though we love our Y and would become a 2 Tesla family with these price cuts if we didn’t need to tow. Can’t wait until we can get rid of the ICE.

    • Anything wrong with getting the tow package on the Y?

      • +1

Unfortunately we need 3T towing for our van. The Y towing is great but only 1.6T.

        • If you need 3T towing (more like 3.5T with everything you put in the van) then best to stick with ICE for now. At least until F150 lightning / Rivian comes to Aus market.

          • @hothed: Yeh that’s the reality and unfortunately Rivian or Lightning would be way too expensive if they ever came here. They start at $80k usd. We use our Y for 90% of our driving and then our 4WD for when we need to tow the van.

            • +1

@dwhes: Great feedback, thanks. Did you just get the RWD model? Very close to pulling the trigger but never heard from a genuine owner before.

              • +2

@WhatWouldBiggieDo: Yeh mate just the RWD. We’ve owned a lot of cars and genuinely it’s probably the one we enjoy being in the most. It’s just so comfortable to be in. Roomy, quiet, smooth and the instant torque is great. A lot of that is EVs in general but we’ve just found that living with a Tesla is great. The app functionally is so well done, we’ve used mobile servicing and it was excellent, the superchargers are great. Just the overall package and sheer amount of storage for us is what does it. And it’s nice continually getting software updates that add features to your car. Feel free to flick any questions you have my way.

                • +1

@dwhes: Thanks mate. I'm well across the numbers as I'm an account that specialises in fleet, I was just interested to know what they are like to live with day-to-day. I will be coming from mostly german cars so will keep my expectations slightly low, but the 15 minute test drive I did in a Model Y left me very impressed.

                  • +2

@WhatWouldBiggieDo: No need to keep your expectations low … the Model 3 is far better than my wife's 2022 BMW 3 series.

              • +1

@WhatWouldBiggieDo: Why not take a test drive and see how it feels like. I own it and it is one of the best car to drive. There few things I hope they improve on. Like ventilated seats, better quality cabin design, door handles. Again I still like it.

                • @ace310: Thanks mate. I've test driven one and was very impressed but was interested more in the long-term ownerships experience. I think i'm sold.

                  • +1

@WhatWouldBiggieDo: Enjoying it for around 8+ months and no issues. Long trips are so much fun and with eap so much relaxing. Yes you do have to plan it a bit but get used to it.

                  • +2

@WhatWouldBiggieDo: Coming up to a year with the model Y (just received my rego renewal which is coming up in 6 weeks). Have had no issues with the car thus far. If there's anything in particular you wanted to find out ask away.

Preparing pop corn to see Elon's world implode with more EV and Twitter competition. And they say go woke, go broke… Haha

    • +2

Elon is trying the exact opposite of "woke" with twitter. He wants to make it the bastion of "free speech" aka "I can say anything I want but you can't"

  • How much are referral credits worth?

    • +1

8,000 credits gets you a Gen 3 wall charger worth $750. So around 10c a credit.

  • Does anyone know when Telsa issue the credits to the referrer?
After the referee places their order, or after they take delivery?

    • +1

      after delivery

      • Thank you. I assumed so, thought I’d check.
