    Jetstar:

    Never again !!!

"The passengers were stranded at Proserpine Airport for 30 hours after the plane they were due to board experienced an engineering issue and was unable to depart."

Um, yeah, I'd take a stranding over flying with a plane that has an engineering issue any day.

Maybe Jetstar could have actually done something to make them more comfortable…

or, God forbid, kept them informed about the situation…

        • Very helpful jv when there are no hotels that had availability, nor JQ staff having any access to resources.
Operations was trying to land ferry aircraft into Proserpine, the lack of a CAT II/III/IIIb ILS system meant that the A320 that came in to ferry pax couldn't land due to minimum visibility standards as per the RNAV approach into Proserpine. And in my mind, JQ FCOM procedures would have the aircraft return to its original departure port or to a nearby suitable diversion field.

JQ's team in Proserpine would have been left in the dark waiting for information themselves as OPS would have seen the situation arise.

“A lot of people apparently lined up their own alternative emergency accommodation but Jetstar were still saying ‘No, hang on we’re getting a recovery plan together’ … and they just stalled and delayed and a lot of people missed out on their own arrangements,”

Hate to make your work harder, @beatthatflight, but given all my experience with Jetstar, also some recent bad experience, I'd say:

I'd pick an airline that doesn't have engineering or logistic issues that strands me or cause changing flights last minute. And Jetstar has a myriad of engineering or logistic excuses. Great prices, low reliability, surely still suits some.

        • +4

All good, I just share the deals ;)

        • All I will say is this - Great prices, low reliability doesnt go hand in hand. Bonza, Tiger Air and JQ has had lots of engineering or logistic issues, and 777partners is already considering Bonzas future position in the Australian aviation industry.
Flight operations and scheduling has 1 answer to fix it though, withdraw aircraft from service and have them on hold for any issues. But then your prices are going to go up.

Qantas did this to ensure reliability and the ABC got pissed off about Qantas airfares not going down due to this measure.

      • +1

Hi @beatthatflight, thanks for your continual service.

        In May, 2023:

Jestar had a reliability of 95.8%.

Qantas had a reliability of 97.5%

        97.5/95.8*100 = 1.8%

Qantas is only 1.8% more reliable than Jetstar.

        Jetstar costs $169.

        Qantas costs $359.

Qantas is 112% more expensive than Jetstar.

Is 1.8% better reliability worth 112% price increase, or should OzBargain boot JV for trolling already?

Don't want him to lose his full time job. I hope someone is paying him to spend this much time commenting….?

    • +3

You could probably pick any airline and find a similar story. It doesn't stop me buying tickets at these prices.

      • +2

Of course. But if you were betting which airline is goint to have "a story" today, Jetstar seems a safe bet.

Good luck and remember to have a spare day off in case you're not coming back to work on time :)

        • remember to have a spare day off

          or two… or three… or….

probably pick any airline and find a similar story.

Probably, just much, much, much more likely to happen with Jetstar…

If you are travelling on your own and don't really care about cancellations and delays, that is fine.
If you are travelling with family and/or have school/work commitments around dates, it is not worth the stress and anxiety of travelling with them.

    • Tell me another airline which had a sale this year from;
Melbourne - Honolulu return for $299
Melbourne - Bali return for $199
Melbourne - Tokyo return for $299
Melbourne - Osaka return for $299
Cairns - Tokyo return for $199
Melbourne - Souel for $399 return
Melbourne - Singapore Business Return for $899
Melbourne - Singapore Return for $299

Has a modern 787-8 fleet instead of a Virgin 737-700 for long haul operations.
Had the lowest cancellation rate of services on routes with only 1 daily flight serviced according to BITRE. (Excluding QantasLink and Qantas Mainline)
Beat a full service mainline carrier (Virgin Australia) on International services in both delays and cancellations when operated on an A321neo or B788 against a B738/B38M according to BITRE (Arrival ports into WADD, RJTT/RJAA).

You all expect a full service flexible fare on an airline thats a low cost carrier. If you want to fly Virgin or Qantas, be my guest but keep your expectations in line with what you pay for, especially in the aviation industry.

Bloody hell 2 weeks ago in Melbourne, I saw a bloody gate agent being slapped by some putrid bogan over a Jetstar seat assignment swap due to an aircraft swap. Good thing the (profanity) was swooped away by the AFP and probably being pressed charges.

      • You all expect a full service flexible fare on an airline thats a low cost carrier.

Nah, just expect them to actually fly you to your destination without stuffing you around and cancelling your flight 3 times.
First cancellation was 3 months before the flight by the way….

        • Wanna hear stuffing you around and cancelling your flight 3 times.
Singapore Airlines out of CPT in 2018. Pushed myself and about 30 pax around for 80 hours before pushing us onto alternative flights via the middle east.

Bonza has cancelled flights 30 hours prior to departure, refused to refund passengers and have them go out of pocket on QantasLink/Jetstar. Its not just Jetstar mate.

BITRE has not included Bonza, but according to flightradars monthly reports - Bonza has a cancellation rate of 19.5% and a delay rate of 39%

          • @AircraftFreight:

            Its not just Jetstar mate.

It is much, much more likely with Jetstar…

            • @jv: Go spend $3500 on your next Qantas Flexible Fare from Melbourne to Perth. At least you will be happy :) (Or $2800 with Virgin if thats more suited to you)

                • @jv: Only 1% more than Virgin though lmfao 4.2 vs 3.2

But is that worth 10, 15 or 20x the price?

                  • @AircraftFreight:

                    Only 1% more

It is actually 34% more likely that the next worse…

                    • @jv: Table 1: Total Industry On Time Performance for May 2023
                      Cancellations %
                      Jetstar 4.2%
                      Virgin Australia 3.2%

                      • @AircraftFreight: Yep, that's 34% more likely to cancel than the next worse airline…

I'm guessing maths is not your strongpoint…

                        • @jv: Dont put the difference lmao from 4.2 and 3.2%

If you buy a ticket, you have a 1% higher chance to have your flight cancelled by Jetstar than on Virgin

                          • @AircraftFreight:

                            lmao

                            Maths 101….

If you buy a ticket, Jetstar are 34% more likely to cancel than the next worst airline for cancellations…

                            • +1

@jv: Its a bullshit way of looking at things thats a direct comparison between Jetstar and Virgin not overall.
Overall you have a 1% higher chance of being canned with JQ than on VA.
Directly yes its 34% but its a bs way of looking at things

4.2% your flight gets canned, 95.8% it doesnt.

                              • @AircraftFreight: Agreed, @AircraftFreight, JV has an inverse way of looking at things.

Using your statistics, @jv, Qantas was only 1.7% more reliable than Jetstar in May 2023, in terms of % of flights that didn't get cancelled.

Considering Qantas can be 300% more expensive, is it worth a 1.7% increase in reliability? Only serious car enthusiasts would pay twice the price for tyres with a 2% increase in traction.

          • @AircraftFreight:

Bonza has cancelled flights 30 hours prior to departure, refused to refund passengers and have them go out of pocket on QantasLink/Jetstar. Its not just Jetstar mate.

"However, the ACCC found in its June report that Bonza’s cancellation rate for April 2023 was around 0.5 per cent, the lowest of all airlines measured and well below the worst offender, Jetstar, which sat at around eight per cent."
            https://australianaviation.com.au/2023/06/bonza-blames-pilot…

    • 10% of Qantas flights are cancelled.

12% of Jetstar flights are cancelled.

Idk if that 2% difference in cancellation rate is worth the price difference on domestic flights.

  • +1

Cancellations are over reported and exaggerated. You literally get the cheap service you pay for, people need to get over it lol.

    • +3

How do you overreport and exaggerate a cancelled flight?
If it’s cancelled , it goes on the cancelled flights numbers.

      • +1

How do you overreport and exaggerate a cancelled flight?

34% more likely to cancel than the next worse airline…

still never had an issue with jetstar other than some pain in the butt flight changes. just an anecdote, but so are those complaining about the cancellations

"I have travelled with Jetstar between Hobart and Melbourne regularly for the last 3 years. Last week I found out my booking was from Melbourne to Hobart instead of the other way around. I am not sure if I did this, very odd."

Sounds like this guy's had a reliable experience with Jetstar for years and then accidentally booked the wrong flight.

  • Jetstar charge oversize luggage for each leg if you're going to bring skis to Queenstown, take that into account on top of the luggage charge.
