I believe this dethrones the Tenda TX9 as the cheapest AX3000 router on market.

Ticks everything for me spec-wise, and supports meshing.

Unfortunately no review on this product yet but I do own a Wavlink docking station and it's pretty solid.

Interesting. Keen to see some reviews

would this work with the nbn box directly or do I need a modem? Also would I notice any differences over the archer vr1600v (speed, latency…) in a studio apt?
    cheers

The NBN box is the modem.

    • Yes it will work

Depends on the technology you have.

It won't work for FTTB/C or N (with these, you'll need a modem) but it will be if you are over HFC or FTTP.

This Wavlink router does work with FTTC. nbn give you a NCD VDSL2 modem for FTTC.

        • +1

Will work with FTTN/B too if you have a VDSL modem in between (just put that one in bridge).

        • Yeah, as I wrote above "with these, you'll need a modem". So no, it won't work, unless you have a modem.

      No difference.

  • Can these only mesh with other Wavlink routers? Or can you mix across manufacturers?

      Wavlink.

Compatible with our AX3000 and AX6000 Mesh WiFi systems for seamless roaming and whole-home coverage.

just bought Tenda TX9 for $74

That looks.. Ugly! I wouldn't take it for free because of that white ugly design, I hate it that much.. Probably functions well but jesus that's an ugly router!

      • My router is in my garage because of FTTP. I never see it, so design isnt an issue. Where do you keep yours?

        • mine is in living room but I won't notice it

      • Do not judge a book by it's cover~!

      • Who rattled your cage?

    • OOS there

Just be aware there's no proof that Wavlink closed the remote access exploits in their firmware.

I cant see an openwrt install for this model yet either.

Hardware is good value, but proceed with extreme caution. For most people on a flat lan, with default dns and such, this device is the "boss" of all your connected devices.

It should be fairly trivial to port, but I don't know how locked down this firmware image is. Their previous models aren't locked down as far as I can tell. May require a bootloader replacement if it's bad, but that unlikely unless they've locked it down or are verifying images.

For most people on a flat lan, with default dns and such, this device is the "boss" of all your connected devices.

HTTPS and HSTS would hopefully mitigate most attacks based on dns poisoning. Hopefully…

      • When there's a potential vpn running and your router is internal; MITM attacking a HTTPS cert is just 1 line of code away.

I love me a cheap router, but I dont love me untested firmware.

  • Most likely hardware configuration based on the firmware image (Which unashamedly is an OpenWrt sysupgrade format image)

    MT7981
    Probably 16mb SPI-NOR
    ??? memory

As for actual OpenWrt support: Not yet, but probably would be simple to port.

    • what router do you use?

  • I wonder can this be used as an Access Point with an ASUS 86U as the primary router?

    • The Wavlink can be setup as an AP. Personally I would get another Asus RT.

  • Looks great for the money but 2 LAN ports is where they have cut some costs.. If this came up last year when i was looking, I probably would of purchased

    • *Would have / would've

      • Thank you for educating me on proper English grammar. Now that you have corrected me, my life is whole again.

  • No USB port for tethering.

  • Jeez, cheaper than EOP devices, ha. Setup as a remote AP

  • do i need it ? do i really need it ?

    • of course you do… at this price

The Honor router 3 can be had for cheaper.

  • I only see a 10% discount option - no 40% discount :(
