  • Can I use this to charge my ipad?

    • +8

I don't believe so. You need to find an apple certified product that is 5 times the normal price but yet an absolute bargain because of the retina display.

    • +1

I think so because of 240V AC outlet at rear for powering laptops, etc..as you can see in the picture.

    • Yep, just plug in a USB car charger (Cigarette Lighter type)… easy. Will need to be a 2.1A vesion for the iPad though but they're common now.

  • This will be good if I can hold at least 1 months before recharging is required.
Any ideas on the time frame guys?

    • +4

I use a very basic version of this containing a no-name generic Chinese 17Ah SLA and leave it locked in a car at an airport for 3-4 months at a time to assist with starting when I get there. It definitely isn't a top-quality battery but it seems to hold a charge well and is never below 12V when I need to use it. I make sure I put it on charge as soon as I get to my destination and then charge it again on the trip back to the airport so I know it's chokka-block when I park the car ready for next time.

So, to summarise I'd say you'd easily be able to leave it for 3-4 months before charging it, just be sure to charge it up after you use it and never leave it permanently connected to the charger as that will dry the battery out and kill it.

Mine wont last forever though and now that it's pushing 3 years old I might look into replacing it with a better unit (like this 5-in-1) or just replace the battery myself. This deal would be the perfect replacement actually, hmmm. Good find OP!

you sound like some kind of spy…

        • a rich spy if he can afford airport car parking for 3-4 months :)

        • Ha… who says I pay ;)

        • Sounds like you need to post something in the forums about that

  • Thanks for the info SteveAndBelle

  • Great find OP, I believe this one is currently on sale at Autobarn for $124.95
I ordered one for my car :)

  • Read the previous thread. If you have basic electronic skills, for about the same price as this you can build a jumpstarter that can start a car on its own, and holds a charge for years, using Lifepo4 cells. You won't get the 5 in 1, just a 1 in 1, but at least it will do that one thing when you need it.

@Steveandbelle What kind of car do you have?

    • +1

The car I start with my dodgy jump starter box is just a small 4-cyl petrol so it's a small easy load for it plus the battery in the car is rarely totally flat. I have also used it to assist starting a 2L diesel Ute but the battery in the Ute was still OK, it just needed a bit of a helping hand.

I think the key here is the expectations of how you wish to use one of these devices… a basic, small, cheap model will be fine for small cars but probably wont last too long if you expect it to start cars with completely flat batteries so something like this 5-in-1 would be much better as it's a good all-rounder but probably not good enough for V8s and mid-large diesels.

  • Will it be possible to use this to power an amp/speaker? If not, what kind of gear should i be looking for?

    • Yes, this will do that but you could also make your own too and without the extra stuff you wont need (air compressor etc.). What's the application? Using a car stereo away from a car? Busking? Mini PA system?

      • Busking/Mini PA system :)

        • Is the mini PA system 12V or 240V?

  • I wonder how old DSE's stock is?
Gel batteries have a 5 year life cycle.

  • Just note that this is only just enough grunt to jump start a V6 petrol engine. It will not start a V8 petrol or 4 cylinder diesel.

    • Also consider this http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/car-sound/car-accessories/wag… if you want a bigger inverter.

    • Bugger! Got a 2.8 4cylinder diesel and thought this would be perfect.
What should I be looking at?
Something more than 900amp I guess? Sounds exy

      • Yeah, a 900 should do it as long as the battery in the vehicle isn't completely flat but I doubt it'd have enough oomph to crank a diesel over by itself. I'd recommend at least a 1200 or possibly rig up a dual battery system depending on your circumstances.

        • Ok thanks. I was wondering why it had a bloody great truck battery in the thing.

      • +1

I've had a 1200 AMP fail to start a 4 cylinder diesel Ford Transit, so your milage may vary. We had to use the 1200 and a normal car battery (One hooked to the battery under the seat, the other to where you are meant to jump it in the engine bay) to get it going. 900 probably won't cut it. I have used an 1,800 to good effect on a 4 cylinder Mercedes Sprinter.

        • Damn I guess that rules out my 5cyl 2.7l sprinter then.

  • Could anyone tell me how long they think this would last running a spotlight?

Thinking of getting it for the boat and just running a spotty off it so that the main battery isnt used.

Probably just going to use a standard halogen spotlight for a car…

  • A 100W Halogen Spotlight consumes about 7-8 Amps so you should get 60-90 minutes of decent brightness out of it assuming the internal battery is around 17Ah. You'd be best to go for an HID system as they consume less current and provide a much brighter light OR if you don't need to search for people-smugglers on the horizon maybe an LED spottie or worklight may be sufficient.

Alternatively, buy a cheap car battery, throw it into a box and you've got something better for around the same money… assuming you don't need the compressor and/or inverter.

    • Thanks SteveAndBelle,
Was going to go the old car battery route, but just saw this and got lazy…

HID is definitely better, but I don't want to spend that sorta money just for a spotty I might rarely use.

You can just buy the 17aH Gel batteries on Ebay ~$22 and hook those up.
        Same same you.

  • +1

Bought one today, it's pretty… pretty…. pretty….good (Larry David impersonation)
For some reason I purchased extended warranty for $22 (replacement warranty)

The unit is built well, the clips don't look the best, but It would suit very well for light/ medium duty. I have x2 4 cylinder cars. So this is good enough, plus I plan to use it on a boat for booster and/or secondary battery for lights, tv, charging stuff

Good packaging, very heavy but has a good handle and feels solid.
eBay has these for minimum $150 and over.
    Thanks op

"Prittay… prittay… prittay good" :) Always a pleasure to meet another Curb' fan!

      Thanks for the review.

  • Could someone that has bought have a look at the 240v inverter please?
It says 200W on the front sticker but most places advertising these say they are 400 watts - much more useful.

  • Just bought and i can confirm this is 12V 17Ah SLA Battery.

    • How much room is inside there? say like if you ripped out the compressor and hose could you squeeze in a second battery?

    • Whats the weight? Usually gives a good indication to the power. Technology may change, but physics doesn't. Based on the rating it should weight about 6kg.

      • +1

        8.6 KG. good quality unit

    • Hey theearth,
Did you crack yours open? Guess you must of.
Could you please measure the dimensions of the battery if its still open?

  • +1

Hard to tell stumo. i am sorry i can't give you the right answer. please see the dimensions provided. Have a good night

  • Dammit you guys. I finally caved and bought one.

I will probably try and crack it open and see if I can put more/different batteries into it. Its pretty much good enough to run our waeco fridge for a couple of hours, but the more power the better.

I doubt it would be able to jump start either of our vehicles, both being 2.7l 5cyl Diesels, but I'll see what I can do. Maybe rip out the jump start parts as well as the compressor to make way for more battery.

  • It's 600A, but not 900A

    • It's 900A peak, not sure how long a peak lasts though.
