  • Just cancelled the card 2 months ago. Can you get back in after that? Don't see waiting period in T&Cs.

    • me as well…

    • Messaged them on Facebook and got this..

Generally if you have ever had a credit card with us then you would be considered ineligible for “new customer’ promotions, but if your credit card account was closed over 5 years ago, then give the team a call on 13 37 39 and they may be able to assist.

      • Interesting stuff there is some conflicting information… I have also cancelled my card recently and was interested in the topic of "new customer". I gave the call centre a call and they have confirmed there is no criteria of who is a "new customer" other than the fact that you aren't currently an existing customer or you aren't "reopening" the closed account.

I was told, by submitting a new application, they will assess it as a new customer and even when approved, it shows up as a "new/separate profile".

        • Ok sweet, I just called up and they said the same thing, even though I closed my card in September if I apply now I'll be considered a new customer and eligible for the deal.

Got this back in March with $64 annual fee and the addition of 250 bonus status credits from Velocity. Just hit my fourth spend a few weeks ago, bonus points are always paid out the same day as the monthly bill is sent. This card has been one of the best cards I've churned in recent years.

    • Did you use it for any Rates, Water, Energy, Rego payments to qualify for minimum spend?

      • I did car and house insurance, and water I think. I paid my rates on an ANZ card to hit a spend back in Feb.

All of the above counted towards the spend.

  • +1

A great card for Velocity for the sign up points, points earn otherwise is average

  • What does a 100k velocity points get you on the best value gift card?

    • +1

      $1000 on ozb classifieds

  • +3

Forgot one of the other main points for anyone who keeps it - the earn rate differs vastly:

The Higher Flyer is 1 point per $1 up to $8,000/month and 0.5 beyond that, the Velocity Flyer is just 0.66 points per $1 up to $1,500/month and then 0.5 beyond that.

    • @Papeto you should add this to the OP

      • +1

        Thanks@sween64, added.

  • Hi All, im struggling to undertand what an eligible purchase is for the Velocity Flyer Card to get the 100,000 points.

I want to use the card to make payments of HECS debt.

At the bottom of the page in "things you need to know" it says at point 10:

"Eligible Transaction means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs)."

    However at point 16 says:

"An eligible purchase means any purchase excluding Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, refunds and chargebacks, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, and fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges."

Cant tell which to follow. Point 16 makes it seem ok. Point 10 says its not possible. Anyone know which is correct?

    • +1

The first, with more exclusions, is correct

    • +3

Ouch, I wouldn’t be paying any now. Should have done that a couple of weeks ago.

Might as well keep the money in your savings account until closer to this time next year

  • Applied and waiting for outcome.
Hope I can use this to make health insurance payments and life insurance payments.

Will payments made via paypal send payment considered towards spend amount?

  • What's best versatile frequent flyer for Asia+southeast?

  • I rang the other day to confirm if a payment to 'defence health' for private health insurance is an eligible spend. The first consultant said 'no' as it is a government transaction. I Explained it's not, it's just private health. Then my second call the consultant said it IS considered an eligible transaction. I confirmed that it is an insurance company, Not a government spend. I voice recorded the fact that she said that I have met the eligible spend for the month. Can I believe them?

    • Paid Bupa private health insurance and got points. MCC won't be a government transaction so hopefully should be okay.

  • Just got approved for a Suncorp card last month (Citi/Nab). Any point trying for this or am I gonna get the auto rejection?

    • +1

I was approved for a Bankwest and Citi card and rejected for AMEX and ZipPay (all in the last month), and gave this one a try.

      • @mameimo: Did you get approved for this one ?

        • +1

Still under review at the moment.

          • @mameimo: Let me know as well how you went

          • @mameimo: Let us know how you go, given you applied for the Citi card I am surprised you didn't get auto rejected already

    • +1

I've been approved for 3 citi/nab cards in the past fortnight and have just got conditional approval for this one (6k limit)

  • -4

I'm thinking of booking refundable hotel worth $1500+ each month to get the bonus points, then refunding them all at the end once I have received the 100k.
Does anyone know if bounus points can be clawed back from your VFF account in this case?
I know Qantas money are able to take points from QFF acc in the event of refunds, but can Virgin Money also do this?

    • curious to know too

    • +2

I've done this before with the Qantas Titanium card, bought a Flexible Qantas Return Business Ticket to New Zealand, Flexible Novotel Accom and after I got my 300k Qantas Points, cancelled the flights and accom although I still hold and use this card today. (Targeted offer)

      • they didn't take back any bonus points after the refunds?

      • How did you get 300k when the Titanium sign on bonus is 150k?

        • It was a targeted offer when it was first created by QF Money. The offer was issued to some QF Platinum/Platinum one fliers who had the previous Qantas Premier Platinum version.

The offer included a permanent reduced annual fee to $800, no Qantas Luxury Holiday vouchers, no FX fee, uncapped statement period for the 1.25 Qantas point earning ratio on all Qantas purchases, with a bumped up $25,000 uncapped statement period for non QF purchases and that any bonus SC earn would go to Lifetime status accrual.

          • @AircraftFreight: Wow insane sign on bonus.

            • @nightelves: Its insane but not really something of substantiation, I do travel a lot for work and have racked up quite the FFQ account. I ended up using the 300k to book a RT trip to Europe for my sister and her partner for their 1 year ann present from me ;)

The huge sell to me was the 20% SC going towards my lifetime status, holding onto 56k SCs and its helped a bit along with DSC. Will end up cancelling the card when I cross 75k in the near future.

Completely new to these CC points systems..
    1. Do you have to minimum spend $1500 p/m? or is this only to get the extra points?
    2. Do you have to have the card for a minimum time period? I.e if I have it for the 4 months, spend the $1500 p/m and get the 120,000 points, can I then use the points and cancel the card? Or do you have to have it for a minimum period to redeem the points (12m) ?
    Thanks.

    • +3
      1. if you make the the spend (1500p/m) you get 25,000 vff points when that months statement is issued. if you don't make the 1500 you just get what points you earned, no bonus.
      2. If you do the 4 months @ 100k vff points and then cancel it in the 5th month that will be fine. The points will be sent to virgin ff (velocity) you will hold those points with velocity until you redeem them or they expire, no matter when you cancel CC.
      • Thanks for the info!

  • i have been on amex velocity platinum for few years - never used the free return flight perk but wondering if i should switch to this instead

  • +1

    I’m confused by this deal

For the Velocity high Flyer card- is it $3.5k per month? Ie $14k over 4months!?

  • +4

You’ll end up on the phone to AFCA over these cards. Virgin Money is seriously not worth the stress. Their security is absolutely terrible and weak for internet banking. I had fraud occur on my card and it took 4 months for Virgin Money to do anything about it, it was like pulling teeth getting them to sort it out. Terrible customer service, and unresponsive to emails when they assign a case manager to you. I had to go to AFCA about it before they took the case seriously. Better to just stick to Qantas cards.

    • On the contrary I've had a Flyer card for a couple of years now and support has been pretty decent. I also had fraud occur on my car a couple of months ago (some transactions with Coles I didn't make), called them up and they cancelled and issued me a new card right away. It was a pretty smooth process, got the new card in about a week.

  • "International Transaction Fee of 3.3%". ouch, dont use OS or online

  • It appears it doesn’t matter if you’ve held the card in the last 12 months with respect to the bonus points qualification - condition 16.

Can anyone else see reference to the usual 12 month hurdle?

  • I still haven't had the guts to sell my 150k QFF points because of people losing the lot when they intercept the transfer and crack it that it's not family you're sending to

    • I have sent my "family members" points a few times without issue.
If you were particularly concerned perhaps a family member with the same surname/address etc. could sign up, you send them the points and then sell them from that account…

Hopefully that would keep your primary acct clean

      • How much do 500k FF points go for?
Asking for a, er, family member.

        • $5k at 1c/pt

Doing a 500k transfer in one go will probably get your account locked though.

          • @Outrageous: That's the thing, I'd rather just get rid of my 160,000 in one clean go. :/

    • If you are the one selling it, and do not have any tickets associated with your QFF account.
It doesnt matter, they get screwed and you get to keep your cash.

    • +2

Seems like the best way to do it would be to let the buyer book directly from your account, rather than transferring.

      • A bit like krisflyer…

      • I did that with my Velocity FF ones from Virgin or whoever (I dunno, I'm not a points guy)

Isn't the booking in my name then or something?

  • So annual fee wavied and 129 dollars of travel voucher to use?

  • +4

There are multiple offers for the Velocity Flyer Card.

    Offer 1: 100k points and 0% BT for 18 months - Annual fee $129
Offer 2: No points and 0% BT for 24 month - Annual fee $0 for first year. See point 39

The bonuses cannot be used in conjunction with each other, as noted in the T&C.

  • one card annual fee is waived (129) but the other one is not (289)

    is My undetsanding right?

  • thanks OP applied

the high flyer isnt really worth it, 3.5k a month, whoooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa buddy

  • Credit file in Australia is trash compared to America.

We still have no way to check for pre-approved offers without the impact to the credit file.

    • +3

America solely relies on credit scores to make judgement for approvals.
Australia more looks at the salary, minimum expenses, current debts and the overall future ability to repay the interest on said debt.

  • Is VFF good value for flights these days VS KRISFLYER?

I'm trying to decide to keep pushing QFF, or do VFF as-well.

Krisflyer expire in 3 years, and it's difficult to build them up. I already have 130k expiring end of the year, and I transferred another 130k from AMEX tho.

My last business class return booking cost 236k points to Europe return, however I booked that like a year ago.

    • Personally find it VFF valuable as it gives you access to Etihad and Qatar flights ex Australia. Kris Flyer has lower taxes though..

      • Oh Qatar through Qantas isn't ex Australia? Makes sense, because my mate flew with a different airline out of Sydney through QFF.

        • Qatar and Qantas had a long time fallout due to Qantas' existing partnership with Emirates.
Qantas has allowed Emirates to grow services into Australia and endorses thier 5th freedom flights to NZ, without any crying.
Whenever Qatar wants to grow into Australia. Qantas cries like a (profanity), and runs to parliament/CASA board to deny such requests.

          1) Qantas FFs cannot book any Qatar Classic Reward seats until 4 months out from departure
          2) Qantas FFs cannot book any Qatar Business Class reward seats into Australia
          3) Qantas FFs have severely reduced availability on Qatar Reward seats
          4) Qantas FFs when travelling on a Qatar cash fare will earn significantly reduced point/SC earnings

  • Their app is a copy of citibank (backer also NAB), beware if you get locked out of the app its a PITA to get app access activated (they ask for an email with you holding photo ID and then some more steps).

I lost access halfway through the promo, didnt bother anymore, used to check the statements/status for payments via web api.

  • It would appear there a so few worthy return flights from the Perth to anywhere of interest within the 100k limit.

  • -3

Medibank had a better deal if you have family. 150k points plus 6 weeks free after 60 days. This seems meh

    • +1

Yeah if you want to spend over 6k in health insurance..

  • $6K spend in 4 months for 100k points? Not thy great, is it? Why so many upvotes?

    • +2

It's great when you already have to spend 6k or know how to manufacture a 6k 'spend' at minimal cost.

    • Because some people spend that much regardless and get nothing?

  • +1

    what are the benefits?

    • The 100k pts for only $129

      • +1

        is100k points worth $129?

        • +1

          It's worth at least $1000

        • +1

Yes, you can usually sell them in the classifieds for 1 cent per point ($1000) if you want to take that risk.

      • Isn’t the 129 fee waived ?

        • +1

No, but you do get $129 flight credit.

          • @Outrageous: So this is incorrect?

39, Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer Card no annual fee waiver offer is available to new customers that apply by 31 July 2023. The annual card fee is $0 for the first year, then $129 will be charged on the anniversary of your card account being opened with Virgin Money.

  • Auto-declined on application, have churned Amex, Citi CC and Citi Readycredit in the last 12 months. Guess I’ll wait until end of the year before trying for my next one.

  • Do you guys use vff points mainly for domestic or int flights?
Whenever I have looked the flight redemptions to Europe, I have never found any decent options via vff. But never had issue with qff or Kris.
Otherwise very tempted with this deal.

    • When you've looked at flight redemptions to Europe via Singapore airlines, do you do this via the redeem flights (after you've logged into Krisflyer)?

I'm new to all this and getting my head around it. I've always read that it's more worthwhile to upgrade your booked ticked to business using points, rather than booking business straight up using points. However, when I tried to go down this route, I realised that I was only allowed to upgrade my ticket to 1 level above to what was booked, i.e. economy -> premium economy. The jump (using points) to business from economy could not be made.

      • Never tried to upgrade any of my tix, always redeemed them in biz straight away

    • The best is to use points that are 'native' to the airline,
so VFF for Virgin, KF for Singapore Airlines, etc.

As soon as you 'exchange' one airline points for another,
the exchange rate is not as good, as using the native points.

For Europe, VFF would use Qatar or Singapore, for the legs
but it's also up to those respective airlines to have Award seats available for point redemptions too.

  • Is the $129 fee waived in the sense that you get the $129 back as travel credit or is it just not charged?

  • Never had a credit card, is there somewhere that will show you on the statement or in the app if the transaction was a eligible purchase?

    • +1

Idk about this one but.. AMEX app shows whether you got the points once it's settled

My other Mastercard CC doesn't show..

  • income ~31K should I try anyway?

    • +1

If your payslips show 31k/year gross, then I wouldn't bother unless you have some other income you can substantiate

  • Great deal, thanks OP
