Plex Lifetime Pass TL₺822,99 (~A$47.67) with Oldubil @ Plex (VPN Required)

3000

A hero has emerged! So much praise to I Smell Pennies for their incredible work on helping our holidaying and migration to the beautiful country of Turkey. I thought this would be worth posting on its own, since it's great value.

For this deal, you will need to follow their instructions for the other deals to obtain a Turkish Mastercard. This can be used for their numerous other deals as well, so it's worth going through the steps (as a bonus, you'll be able to use it when you holiday/migrate also).

For those who have been holding out on Plex Pass, it's great to pick up a subscription whilst you're in Turkey, with the price dropping nominally below $50 AUD given current exchange rates. There are a few extra $$'s required for exchange fees, nonetheless this is a great time if you've been wanting hardware transcoding and app access.

Step by step:

  1. You will need an Oldubil digital card with sufficient funds to make the purchase (TL₺822,99)
  2. Once you have landed in Turkey and have access to the internet via your Turkish ISP (alternatively, you would be using a VPN. NordVPN works well in Turkey), go to the Plex Pass Upgrade landing page. If you are connected appropriately, you should see a prompt to upgrade at a monthly price in TL₺. If you see another currency, you may need to try another ISP/VPN.
  3. Click the prompt and create or login to your Plex account.
  4. Select lifetime pass for TL₺822,99
  5. Enter your Oldubil card details; as helpfully pointed out by kaneoriley the postcode 06700 is appropriate with default Oldubil bank settings
  6. You should be able to purchase the pass successfully.

Some users have had issues with their card transaction not working, so perhaps it is worth making sure you have something else you can spend your Lira on in case you can't get the transaction to go through. I had no trouble using NordVPN.

  • Is there a reason to use Revolut instead of a credit card to load an Odubil card?

    • +1

I just tried and you must send Turkish Lyra to Odubil. So I signed up for revolut, which does take credit/debit in AUD, then converted to TRY, then deposited to Odubil. Waiting for it to clear now.

This is my first time. Took 15 min to set it all up from scratch.

  • How is the currency calculated? if the price round up would it be TL₺823?

  • +1

What happened to Turkish Lira? Last time I checked a couple of months ago 1 AUD was worth around 12 TL but now it’s over 17 TL. Makes all these deals so much better.

    • +7

They saw what Erdogan has done to their economy and decided they would like more

      • +2

You sure it wasn't Erdogan who decided that Turkey needed more Erdogan?

    • Weird. It was like $1AUD was like 3YTL when I was travelling through there. Then a couple of years later Erdogan decides to buy the Russian missile system instead of the American one.
Then all of a sudden the YTL is in free fall.
      Linkable? IDK.

  • what if im currently paying monthly for plex? Would it still work?

Have never used flex before. Could someone explain what does it have? All netflix shows and tv channels ?

    • it's not a streaming service. you need to find content to stream. ripping blu rays is the best way but also downloading web rips is also good for stuff that's not avalible in Australia.

      • Technically it is a streaming service now. But I’m sure 99% don’t use it for that.

  • +1

Wait a week and it'll be at $20

  • Jellyyyyfiiinnnn 🤯🤯🤯

    • +2

I tried Jellyfin (a lot of folks rave about it) but it just showed all my media as an ugly and clunky list of files. No "continue watching", no artwork. Basically looked like a file browser with text size optimised for TV screens. Is this just how it is? Or was I doing something wrong? Plex just picks up the info for everything immediately, doesn't really care about file naming etc.

      • +2

Definitely doing something wrong, all my media gets detected with full metadata. The official clients aren’t great but there’s native ones for most platforms, swiftfin for iOS and macOS & Apple TV I think, or use infuse for apple tv, findroid for android. Try re-naming your media and folders.

        • That's good insight, did extensive googling and didn't even know third party clients were a thing. Main client device is Chromecast w Google TV (4K). Would you recommend using Findroid on that?

edit: and does Jellyfin include option to "skip intro" as Plex premium does?

          • +1

@eggboi: Pretty sure findroid doesn’t support android tv yet but honestly the official app isn’t too bad on android tv (i also use a chromecast 4k). Jellyfin has intro skipper unofficially using this https://github.com/ConfusedPolarBear/intro-skipper

If you have basic Linux knowledge it’s very simple to setup. Just a git clone, overwrite some files and install a plugin. Works great

Not as seamless as Plex but definitely like it better

Edit: if your trying to make the switch and don’t have the knowledge, please pm me I would be happy to help :))

            • @Leho: Very kind offer thanks! I don't have the time right now, and zero Linux experience (Windows and Mac user) but great to know options exist for future. Currently Plex free seems to suit my needs, nabbed a $199 Surface Pro 5 from the refurb deal recently and using that as a server. Been excellent so far, idle power usage is around 3.5W, and it's fanless so I don't feel bad leaving it on 24/7.

  • Awesome. This goes perfectly with the HP PC I bought from computer traders earlier today!

  • +1

Is there a way to lift up the Oldubil threshold which is only like 2500 TL?

What do people use Plex for?
In terms of streaming, why not just use Stremio+RD.
My understanding for Plex is that, we would need to setup our own small infrastructure and maintain it as well?

    • If you can't work out what plex is on your own, you're not going to be able to set it up.

    • Plex makes your own netflix out of your collection.

      • Still need a Netflix subscription to link it up

        • Huh? I’m saying that plex makes your own streaming service, like your own version of Netflix. You don’t need a Netflix subscription.

          • @MrFunSocks: Yeah similar but isn't Netflix.
Plex breeder used to include any content can in the day.

            • @G-rig: I didn’t say it’s Netflix. I said it makes your own streaming service out of your collection. Like Netflix but your own content.

  • +1

Never understood the need for plex. Recently got real debrid and Kodi on my Amazon Fire TV 4k. Plays everything you need

    • Why kodi and not Stremio?

      • Found Kodi has a better UI on Fire Stick, although runs slower

    • Plex is Kodi but easier and more user friendly, especially across multiple devices and households.

  • +3

Good job for taking it for the team and testing it out :)

  • Damn I was going to wait until the next 20% discount (September) to make the most of this. I wonder if they’ll patch it up now, as in add extra requirements or increase the price just like the others. Hmm to wait and potentially miss out or to just buy now.

    • I thought about this - only risk is that they raise the Turkey pricing to be a dollar to dollar match against US pricing.

  • What's the usual wait time for funds to appear in Oldubil account from Revolut? Still no funds 5 hours later for me.

Double checked Revolut transfer details and all is accurate with transfer confirmed as received.

    • +1

A lot of people have been sayings minutes but my transfer has just passed 12 hours so I'm not sure

      • Tedious wait, but funds have finally appeared in my Oldubil account. Purchased the pass without issue using Windscribe free VPN. Happy days.

    • +5

Paying money to pirate movies? You're really not as clever as you think.

      • +2

The best way to pirate movies and tv shows is by paying to use that part of the net.

        • People mention this but I hear paying for piracy and I've tuned out

          • @robeh: It's like $50 a year. Less than you pay for any of the streaming services.

            • @MrFunSocks: Paid 30$ for Disney
Can swap and share with other people.
Netflix $7 per month ultra 4k.
Amazon free if pay for free shipping anyway.

              • @G-rig: Cool, but you're missing out on everything that's not on Disney, Netflix, and Amazon, which is almost everything.

                • @MrFunSocks: I just don't get the anti streaming camp…. "You are missing out so much…","You are missing out on everyhing…"

SO WHAT EXACTLY AM I MISSING? And its so valuable that I need to spend time on building a media sever/NAS, get a usernet account and a fix line unlimited NBN. SERIOUSLY if one has to go through all this trouble to get these content that we are missing out, you guys MUST be able to justify and convince the streaming camp.

At the mean time I will just keep steaming from Amazon, Disney, Paramount and You tube anywhere in Zone 1 countries and don't have to look for a crappy WIFI connection. BTW I don't even use 10% of these content so again what am I missing out?

                • @MrFunSocks: Go on..
Should have mentioned HBO, stan, Kayo.

                  Some cnts just like arguing.

            • @MrFunSocks: I actually just very recently got into Usenet and think I’m gonna check out after my year is up. It’s more like $80 a year when you factor in indexer and provider and that’s only 1 indexer and 1 provider, people seem to suggest having more is a good idea. I have nzbplanet and drunkenslug and I’m a bit underwhelmed by the results. I was hoping it would fill in gaps for content in public torrent indexers but most of the time it has way less results. Maybe it’s better for the higher quality stuff but I’m not prepared to download NTb files that are like 8-10GB for 1 episode in a series.

              • @Castcore: I use NZBGeek for my only indexer, which was like $20 for a lifetime subscription, and CubeNet as a provider. I get 99% of the stuff I'm after, in x265 1080p at around 300mb for a half hour tv show or 600 for an hour show. I've looked at adding a second provider on a different backbone and also another indexer, but just don't need it with how good these 2 are.

                • +1

@MrFunSocks: Huh interesting, yeah I'm finding more stuff in x264 which I avoid unfortunately. NZBGeek is one of the best I think so that's pretty interesting you can get lifetime. For provider I got Frugal and looks like they're the same backbone as CubeNet. For an extra $4 usd pa you can get Frugal which includes their own usenet farm as well as a 300GB block to their other brand (Blocknews) which is longer retention. Or for $45USD pa you get a 750GB block.
Maybe I need to look into trying NZBGeek, although Drunkenslug is supposed to be great too. Yeah I dunno, despite setting preference for NZB my arrs are still pretty much only grabbing torrents because they fit my quality preferences more. Oh well

    • Welcome to 2007

      • Where the bitrate was still higher than these starved streams, so they save on bandwidth costs.

        • Yeah got my fair share of backups (720p and 1080p), looks pretty average on a 65" these days so deleted most. Pointless..

          • @G-rig: yup. now with 4k tv, probably we need to redownload all our 720p movies… lucky we have this x265 super small sizes. just make sure the hardware can play it.

            • @CyberMurning: Yeah 1080p x265 is the sweet spot IMO. Great quality at less than 2gb per movie.

              • @MrFunSocks: yup… or for documentaries probably worth to get 4k x265 the rest 1080 fine unless very very good movies

                  • @G-rig: I have never paid for online streaming. Not even netflix. Some free trials yes and stop after

  • I'd be tempted to get plexpass in order to use Plexamp.
Anyone here use it as their music streamer? I've got a raspberry pi running volumio but wouldn't mind a mobile app that is capable of accessing my music collection remotely (and or offline) from the pi location.

Have found this but don't want a dedicated pi OS as such. Volumio premium probably does what I want (about $100/y but happy with virtuoso for $46/y). Premium has a new UI that includes SuperSearch which sounds neat (plays own collection and steaming results).

    https://github.com/odinb/bash-plexamp-installer

Could always test on a new sd card..

    • +1

I use plexamp pretty regularly on my daily commute to work. Sometimes it can take a while to connect but once it's going it's great.

      • That sounds pretty easy given there's an app for plexamp now, assume you just need theplexpass.

My RPi4 screen is currently playing up (was getting a white screen on bootup) and now stuck at a volumio screen login..
I've done a fresh install and Volumio works if I disconnect the screen, so I believe something has gone a miss with the ribbon connector and it could be a warranty claim (have emailed Pi Aus). Trying to reseat it several times doesn't help.

So I'm tempted to try another OS as a test on a different SD card.

Is something like a Plex server on a RPi headless edition what I want?

Shame Roon Lifetime is so expensive, would be very neat especially with Roon Arc. I've wasted bigger money but not cheap at all. Could do a trial i guess.

        Cheers

    • +1

Yeah it works well and if your connection is good enough you can stream FLAC's outside of your house. Like with anything plex pass though it does depend on your home internets upload speed.

    • +1

Plexamp is fantastic. Simple and elegant.

I use it for music which isn’t available on streaming services. Has a great CarPlay app too

    • It is not bad. If you use iTunes, you can import your entire iTunes library into Plex (and thus to PlexAmp).

Of course you would already have most of your songs on your iDevice but it is useful to have in case there are some obscure songs you didn't transfer across.

  • Said that Plex Pass doesn't remove ads

    • Remove ads from what?

      • Plex has movies that are free to watch but with ads similar to Youtube

        • Isn't it free movies?

  • Does anyone use this as their stream portal? Or just NAS user buy this?

    • People do both. The native apps aren't too bad.

How many times are you going to watch the same stuff over and over.. digital hoarding. The cost of a decent Nas and 1-2 12TB Nas drives would be at least $600-1k.

Netflix 4k via turkey is only $7/month.

      • That's my point, I don't understand the need of a NAS video server in 2023…..

YTP is dirt cheap through Turkey
Prime, you are either having it free or you use it so much that you are paying for it anyway
Netflix again dirt cheap (but I can be border to go through the steps to get it
Paramount plus its like $4 a month if you get on annual special
Disney plus and Binge is not for everyone and neither are good value but depends on user preference.
Then there is 5 free apps from free air tv.

What you can't find above can usually be find on internet. so with all that content, a NAS server? You have got to be kidding me right?

Most streaming aggregator are free so I was just wondering for non NAS user, would they and why would they pay for this?

        • Netflix/Youtube/Disney/Paramount etc still probably has only about 1% of all the shows out there, and you're paying a fortune to subscribe to all of them.

More and more people are setting up their own NAS/video server these days because of how easy and advanced it's all getting with Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr/etc.

          • -1

@MrFunSocks: I have Youtube; Prime Paramount and Disney..Do'nt know exact total but at about $20 most. If that is 1%, are yo saying you need the other 99%?

And to who setting up NAS is easy? Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr? what is that?

Then there is the download content part? Where you going to get it? and if we are going to ignore the legal topic than everything can be find on on streaming sites. Yo just have to know how to look for it.

            • @syswong:

And to who setting up NAS is easy? Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr? what is that?

They're tools that make setting up a NAS and automated media library management a piece of cake, especially with Docker.

The explosion in streaming services has once again unfortunately made piracy explode. When it was just netflix many people stopped, but now with there being a dozen streaming services it's basically back to the top pay tv package prices for everything.

              • @MrFunSocks: May be for enthusiast, a bit like the iPhone vs Camera argument for photography.

The cost of the NAS set up is equal 4 YEARS of streaming cost assume I can keep it around $20 a month. No hardware software installation required and no need to look for stuff to download……. Just 4 Apps. For me streaming wins hand down.

                • @syswong: You don't need NAS for plex. I have it running on my home server pc which also hosts 2 linux vms and home assistant vm. So everything in one box. Linux vm hosts all the services like sonarr/radarr/torrent etc. PC is just i3 with 24gb ram and 20tb+ hdd which I built like 4-5 years ago.

                  • +1

@ace310: I know but my point is the days of media server are long gone now that you can get everything on streaming and internet.
I had a few gigs of file that I collect in the old days of BT and cant remember the last time I access them. In fact I can't remember the last time I watch download content on my PC.

Sure that is not just me….

                    • +1

@syswong: I disagree. I like to watch US crime tv series like CSI, Ncis, law and order or masterchef from around the world etc. Find a streaming service you mentioned that have those?

Secondly you have to keep jumping between different apps to watch a movie or series. In plex everything is under a section. You can also add streaming services to plex so it will take you there if not in library.

                        • @G-rig: Enlighten me? I have Netflix and YT premium. How do you get ABC US, NBC shows on google tv?

I do share my library to few of my family and friends, so they don't have to pay for it and secondly I don't think my parents can use multiple apps to find what to watch in which app.

I don't watch anything on my pc. I use plex client on Google tv, Samsung tv, apple devices.

                          • @ace310: Everything you mentioned is on Paramount and prime which is about $10 in total per month (Free on 10play with ad) and all accessible from Google tv. The n phone and tablet you can just use JustWatched. No need to switch apps.

        • I already had a fileserver at home so it was a no brainer. I use it for all sorts of storage(I am a musician and video editor so I keep backups with redundancy) as well as media storage. I probably wouldn't advise someone else to go this route unless they already had or wanted a server for other reasons.

In 2023 you probably wouldn't set up a NAS for hoarding movies… But you may also want a place to store your family photos with redundancy and set up auto backups of some of the files for the computers in your house, etc.

Some people may legit just want to set up a NAS or windows server, etc just because they can and are interested in doing so. It's pretty awesome only having SSD storage in your computers/laptops/etc and having a massive network drive that you always have space to dump stuff onto instead of having a bunch of portable USB drives with(or without) labels on them.

          • @FaceOfMutiny: For work I can understand. Chance are there are way to run a mini steam services to allow colleagues and customer get access to material.

        • I like making and maintaining by own server and being able to store family files - untethered to a subscription by a company that is scraping all the data - safely with parity.

If you want to try to avoid the need to Transcode on the fly, look into using Tdarr instead and do one-off permanent transcoding ahead of time. You can set up a desired granular output state, have it monitor a location and anything that comes in will be modified to fit the desired output state. You'll need a GPU (or if you absolutely must, a CPU) somewhere on the network to be a Transcoding node, but you can just have a PC do that when it suits you. If the node is offline, everything just sits and waits in the queue until it comes back online.

  • Years since I've used it really. Didn't realise they removed free hardware transcoding.

  • Tried registering to Oldubil but asking for mobile number, entered my AU number but now it says cannot deposit TL if number does not start with +90 due to regulation. Did anyone successfully register to Oldubil and how did you do it? TIA.

          • @I Smell Pennies: Thanks, may i know what's the step when you did the transfer? Is it deposit money or transfer money? Can't use transfer money because it's complaining about my Gsm not starting with +90

  • excellent post, awaiting for transfer now, walkthroughs were invaluable, been meanig to setup plex for family members to stream

FYI from the Xbox post linked in the description:

  • Great work OP and others, in presenting all of this.
I might be misunderstanding, but it seems a large part of this setup is just getting the OS funds ready - and at that point you are simply paying the amount required in reference to the Plex account holder info right?
My query being - if someone has done the funds setup already and it's worked for their own Plex Pass, would it be possible to do a 2nd payment for a 2nd Plex pass subscription?

If so, I'd be interested to leverage this… Yes it's the 'less effort' method on my part I know, but if this is the case and someone's willing to share the effort, let me know.

  • Hi all,

When I get to the login step it recognises my Plex account is australian and changes the price from Lyra to Aud, im currently subscribed monthly….do I have to cancel my subscription and then try? or do i need to setup a new account?

    Cheers
