FYI Mi Band 8 was released this year and they've done away with the friction based watch bands. I've lost all of my Mi Bands (I think 3 of them) due to the watch popping out of the wrist band.

    • +31

That's pretty anecdotal - I've had more than 5 of these, and I've never had an accidental friction popout from them - it's a very tight fit on those things, and you'd need a very intense sudden knock to be getting anywhere near the pressure needed.

      • +6

Why did you need 5 of them?

        • +20

At this price point it’s easy to justify upgrading every few models. I don’t think they meant 5 of the same models.

        • +26

          One for each appendage.

        • +5

I like the miband and I've had every model from v2 on up I think. Upgrade when it's on sale and it's no more than a coffee and cake price. No problem with it popping out of the band. Have had the strap come undone and I now buy a 3rd party velcro strap with the same silicone holder

          • @jebdra: Does the Velcro last with the taking it off and on regularly? Also do you have a link?

My hoop you thread the band through broke so need something new

            • +1

@Jackson: I bought this one for my Mi band 6 ( https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/195500011532 ) again as the velcro does wear out. I started buying these because the original band started giving me a rash. There are cheaper options, like 3 packs of the same band.

              • @Loopholio: Cheap, but no where near as cheap as the silicon and only ones. I haven't really had any issues prior to this one breaking, it took about 6 months of use at least. How long does one of these Velcro ones last you?

I think someone mentioned a butterfly clasp one (just below actuallyl, might last longer

                • +1

@Jackson: The first one I bought lasted me eight months. It still works, but the velcro is nearly worn out.
Not having a rash is my main reason for using these. My skin decided one day that it didn't like metal bands or the plastic Mi Band. It's happy with these velcro material based bands which must be made of a different type of plastic.

                  • +1

@Loopholio: Yeah I have had all sorts of responses to different silicon bands, the Xiaomi ones aren't too bad for me, the original LG G watch I couldn't handle, was painful as

    • +4

Possibly had it on too tight. Happened to me a couple times. I found a metal butterfly clasp style band worked better for me.

      • Possibly, but I found it wouldn't keep accurate readings throughout the day and night if I didn't keep it snug.

    • +1

i experienced the same, and i assume it happened because i always wear it during my shower.

Do you always wear it during any wet activities? swimming, shower?

      • +2

Nah I would usually take it off. And occasionally use that time to charge.

      • I wear it in the shower and bath and swimming. Never had a problem with it popping out.

    • My bigger issue/question is how supported is the Xiaomi software/app?

  • +4

Anybody tried this with gadgetbridge? Mainly just want stats without the botnet

  • +23

Imo the Mi Band 8 at ~$56.20 (aliexpress) is a better and worthy buy.

On top of the Mi Band 7, it has an Ambient light sensor (so you don't need to futz with brightness settings), and a slightly bigger battery. It also has some basic games on the bands too. The band style itself is nicer (although less OEM style bands for it yet).

In general, the watch band is pretty awesome, and I ditched WearOS for it - too many promises and too little battery life. The hardware would rarely last more than a year anyway, yet I'd still be paying hundreds for each model? Didn't make sense.

    • Any link for this one on aliexpress ?

      • -3

Just look it up and you'll find it, bought mine a couple of months ago and on the same store the price has already dropped cos they've sold sHitloads

        • NFC?

          • +2

@Ciderfizz44: the NFC doesn't work in Australia - only supports Wechatpay and AliPay and unlikely works outside China (region locked)

            • @stwongy: No to nfc. Even if the hardware is there, it wont work.

      • +15

This seems to be the most popular listing:
        https://aliexpress.com/item/1005005473193599.html

        • Thank you :)

        • Thanks, bought Mi8 for $49 @ AliExpress

          • @Iradio: Which link do you use?

            • @adn: The Link @TheFreaK shared above, the page displayed a welcoming deal, totaling $41 plus the cost of shipping and tax, resulting in a total of $49.

              • @Iradio: Mine is coming to $57.34 including tax and shipping

                • +1

@antik: The cheaper price is for new users it seems. You can check by either signing out of AE or opening an incognito webpage.

        • i notice that is the CN version - is there a way to change it to english?

          • @RoscoCheapo: Says it in the description:
If you want change the band to English , It need change your phone language to English .
Then you can Return to own language , The band can keep English.

    • +3

Band 8 has a 60Hz display as well which makes the interaction with the screen much more fluid.

    • Thank you - my old man has lost 4 of the various mi bands over the last 2 years, all just popped out of the watch band while he was out hiking etc. Bought the 8 from aliexpress instead.

  • -6

Not the same product but my poco watch suddenly died within a year. Xiaomi really changed, man

    • My MiBand (can't remember the model, but it had a shiny circle on it for the touch control) had its light go out. I think it's still working but it's impossible to use because you can't make out what's on the screen. If anyone knows a fix would appreciate the info

      • +1

I think that is the Miband 2. I have one with the same issue. I moved on as it had it's day and was old so didn't worry too much. Others reported the same issue with it (Google MiBand2 dark screen). None of the fixes worked on mine.

  • This or Huawei Band 7/8?

    • +7

Huawei is only the answer when the question is what company to avoid.

    • I own a Huawei GT2 watch, it is maybe 3 years old and it basically no longer functions because the app (that makes it work) was deleted from all stores.

      • +1

You can find the apk online probably

  • +9

Very inexpensive way to get a silent alarm. Still using mi 4 … feels like I only charge it every 3 or 4 weeks.

    • Lol.. That’s my only use case… my original fitbit flex 2 battery is end of life.. looking for an alternate that’s sleek and preferably no display.. but i guess the world has moved on..

      • +1

I have the display off unless touch it. And even then it’s dimmed.

    • +1

Yep. I got a 6 and the battery life was not nearly as good as the 4 and so I went back to the 4.

The Mi Band 4 has such good battery life and is so light.

I don't know what I'm going to do when my 4 dies.

      • The 5 is very good as well (coming from the 4), I change mine every 2 or 3 weeks. The 8 doesn't seem too bad either if all the fluff is not used.

  • +2

its fantastic, but get a new velcro strap. i lost mine within a few days. ended up finding it a week later because i pushed it out of my jacket sleeve when putting on my jacket.

i highly recommend getting a new strap. I have a garmin fenix i paid way too much money for, but doesn't fit what i wear all the time. it is made of metal so it is heavy wearing it all day. i just use it for endurance training and triathlons.

i always want to keep track of my steps and basic stuff and didn't want to spend a lot for a daily tracker. serious stuff i use the garmin, but for non serious stuff i use this.

  • +3

I have an old xiami mi band 2 or 3 I think.

Is there any cheap Chinese brands that do global NFC for payments?

I'm going overseas for 6 weeks and don't want to pull out my folding phone for payments.

    I don't understand this list: https://www.mi.com/global/support/nfc-bank?lang=en-001&tag=x…

Does global NFC work with all my cards and everywhere, or is it limited?

  • +2

Not wanting to change apps (using Zepp Life) for convenience, seems the 7 is the most current version available is we want to sync to Google Fit.

  • I would wait for the Amazfit band 7 (made by the same company) to go on special. Came out around the same time, has Alexa support via a mic on the band and has a flatter rectangular profile so it doesn't do that popout thing

    • +1

whats the difference generally speaking between amazefit vs mibands?

      • +1

Mi Band is Xiaomi's line of budget fitness trackers. Somewhere along the line they bought out Amazfit's company (Huami) but they still use different teams to release their trackers.

I like Amazfit's bands better because of the smart assistant at this pricepoint and it has more features. At the $40-60 mark you're probably choosing between Redmi Band 2, Amazfit Bip U Pro, Mi Band 7/8, Amazfit Band 7

        • +1

is the amzefit 7 their flagship? im looking for utlra long battery life and water resistance. tired of the smartwatches lasting 2 days

          • @furythree: Yes, Amazfit Band 7 is their main and latest band. If you're strictly looking for bands there's the Mi Band and also Oppo band along with the Huawei's own band. I think Kogan also released one with the rectangular watchface and it also has a smart assistant.

Battery life should be around a week for most of them but ymmv

            • +1

              @nGu: thanks

im liking the amazefit 7 but no sales lol

              • @furythree: Try ebay when next month's coupons come out. Looks like you just missed it for $55 a few days ago. And then there's always 11.11

  • does google pay work on these?

  • +1

Ordered mi band 8 for ~$47 from aliexpress using one of the comment above.

  • I too went with the mi band 8, even though it's not the global version I'm pretty sure a firmware flash could be done on it in the future to make it a global version anyway 👋

    I've had previously
    Mi band 2
    Mi band 3
    Mi band 4
    Mi band 5

I hadn't had time to discover 6 & 7 bands they even now have the pro 7..

    All previous bands amazing 🤩

    • u still have the old ones lying around by chance?

      • Mi band 2 yep keep it as a relic 😄

        • lol i pulled mine out of the box and the screen brightness is faded AF

          • @furythree: Least it still turns on 😄

My wife had the fit pro 2 from Samsung it lasted under 2yrs now it won't turn on nor any warranty.. think I paid around $170…

When you find these watches you soon realise which is better for not just price but functions 🙌

            • +2

@Gomo: i still daily drive my galaxy watch gen 1

its a bit of a lottery

samsung charges a premium because their ecosystem is still better than xiaomis speaking from global terms

like i want samsungpay and integration with smart things etc

just not going to get that with xiaomi

but with xiaomi, i want a dumb-smart watch that tells the time, tracks steps and last a super long time and can get beaten around for super cheap

they tick that box perfectly. no way im paying over $150 for any brand for those features knowing how cheap they are to make these days

7 years ago the tech was just starting out the costs to make including RnD were a bit higher. but components these days after so many years are mass manufactured that even $60 feels overpriced lol. youre literally just paying for brand and ecosystem

  • Do these have the option for audible alerts for SMS / notifications? I'm looking for one for my Mother and she has a tendency to wear watch type devices really loose on her wrist so the vibrational alerts get missed easily.
I realise this will affect accuracy of the sensors etc but I don't really want it for that, it's more about the notifications of messages etc.
I tried a Ticwatch GTH and the lack of audible alerts really prevents it from being useful.

    • +2

I don't believe so, I may be wrong though

Will only vibrate in the case of a phone notification/SMS

  • Any idea when the global version of the Mi Ban 8 is coming out? I prefer Zepp Life to the Mi Fitness app the Chinese version is tied too

Can't seem to find any definitive evidence of the date of the global version and I'm sitting at the edge of my seat ready to upgrade from my Mi Band 5

    Thanks

  • +1

These bands are awesome. Inexpensive, strong battery life and does the job. Battery life is about a month too.

  • Last one I had was 5 or 6 and cycling didn't work. Calculated the heart rate much lower than what it truly was which threw the calories burnt out.
    GPS tracking worked fine.

Has this all been fixed or for cycling is it still Garmin forerunner which dominates?

  • i have the 6 still. likely hokding oyt for mi 8 global ???

i noticed steps tracked are difference from 4 to 6

  • +1

    These devices aren't very accurate.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2akK9l0XGFQ

    • Confirms what I was saying. Undershoots outdoor cycling heart rate, I was never sure if this was because of gripping onto the handlebars or due to light entering the sensor. Either way something changed between mi band 3/4 vs 6 when they went from a cradle charger to just the magnetic charging cord. The sensor is definitely far worse.

Surprised to see Apple Watch the most accurate watch! Too bad I don't use iPhone :(
