In your blurb there halfway through it switches to talking about RT-AX88U?
Edit : seems that way on the JB-Hifi page though too.

      Thanks, I'll fix it.

      • +1

Yeah well careful, how you fix it. Seems like the 82U doesnt have 8 Ethernet ports for example.

JB stuffed up. RT-AX82U ports are..

RJ45 for Gigabits BaseT for WAN x 1
RJ45 for Gigabits BaseT for LAN x 4
      USB 3.2 Gen 1 x 1

ASUS spec is V1, this is V2, what is the difference?

    • +1

Doesn't seem like there's much information about it online but a poster on another site said this:

It seems the CPU is upgraded for v2 from my searches. If the info is correct then the V2 uses BCM6756, which is a quad-core, while the V1 uses BCM6750 which is a tri-core.

      • Thank you! I’m already on V1, so definitely not worth the upgrade. This is still very good price imo, I got mine second hand for $250 years ago lol

  • Anyone can comment on the wifi singal coverage please?

  • +1

Looks like a child's toy rather than a router.

  • Anyone know if this is worth the extra $100 over the AX58U for the average joe? Managed to get the AX58U before it ran out of stock but I can still return it for this.

Honestly hard to say, both should be able to do what you want…but not going to know if it's going to make a noticeable difference for yourself without a side by side comparison, and let's be realistic, not many people buy 2 different routers and tests them with like for like examples.

With the routers I have purchased in my time, IV noticed one thing, although high and low price tend to have similar functionality, the higher you go on price the more reliable they TEND to be.

That's not to say you can't get a cheap reliable one, but I'm just talking about personal experience..

By "reliable" I'm talking about less crashing, router causing outtages, and less need to restart the router.

i got 58u under the other deal , it has 160mhz channel and quad core cpu ……the big numbers are just what the router can handle across 5 and 2.4ghz … client devices e.g laptops or phones will operate on 2.4 or 5ghz but not aggregate both …..

Just remember this is one of the ones flagged with a vulnerability.

Update firmware as soon as you get it.

    • shame, I have an xbox so i'll have to give this one a pass

  • When I go fttp I will need to replace the dog egg awful tp link modem/modem. I was looking at the ax86u. How is this in comparison?

    • +1

      better

      • This is better? At half the price? Bargain! I'll pick one up tomorrow! Thanks @shroomish

        • No, the ax86u is better:
          https://dongknows.com/wi-fi-6-routers-compared-asus-rt-ax86u…

Specs-wise, the RT-AX86U is a more powerful router. It has more processing power, higher Wi-Fi specs on the 2.4 GHz band, and a 2.5 Gbps LAN/WAN port. As a result, it's generally faster, has a slightly better range, and can work as a much better mini NAS server.

          But…

Truth be told if you live in a small home that a single broadcaster can cover, either will give you an excellent experience. The RT-AX86U is only clearly better when you can take advantage of its single Multi-Gig LAN/WAN port.

Whether it's worth double the price is for you to decide…

@AncientWisdom: Thanks @AncientWisdom. I just don't want to get a lower spec that 'just' manages and find myself with the router as the weak link again as the modem/router for fttn is absolute rubbish and the ODFMA leasing locks one or more connections out even when reset each evening at 3am on the overnight reset cycle. As the household 'tech support" ' its "my fault" so I'd like the best I can justify.

Current, have the Tp Link ax1500 giving me full speed (52mbps) on tpg through 3 walls (lets be generous and call internal divides in Australian houses walls shall we!) to mobile and pc, so when I upgrade to FTTC with Aussie or Superloop I'd like the performance to make it at least that far.

And maybe be less laggy when playing xbox!

It's broadcom … i wouldn't buy this. Vote with your $ and only buy open source chipset networking gear, so you can keep it up to date with open source software.

Asus sell other routers with open source chipsets.

    Always check Openwrt before purchasing.

It's highly probable the Asus RT-AX82U V2 will be supported by an Official ASUSWRT-MERLIN Fork sometime this year:
      https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/about
      https://gnuton.github.io/asuswrt-merlin.ng/
https://github.com/gnuton/asuswrt-merlin.ng/issues/357 (scroll down to second to last comment)

I can picture gnuton repelling into Broadcom's R&D Lab and downloading the top secret FOSS drivers.

      • I still wouldnt buy BCM gear.

If they are allowed access to propietary blobs so Merlin can do it's thing, that's good.

I have a pile of BCM gear with Openwrt on it, but they are severely restricted as wireless devices by doing that. As a pure router they work fine though.

        • I wonder too If they have access to Broadcom's proprietary blobs for the wireless to function properly.

  • Can anyone advise if this will go well to replace my current setup of r7000 and deco m5 with
This router Asus RT-AX82U and mesh of $89 Asus RT-AX54HP

    • +1

For a worthwhile upgrade I'd put the $89.00 towards a second Asus RT-AX82U (although the Asus RT-AX54HP will be ok) and if possible when setting up your mesh connect (bridge) the two Asus routers to each other with an ethernet cable for best performance. It's worth the effort of running an ethernet cable between the two for a rock solid connection and increase WiFi throughput as the bridge won't be using wireless bandwidth.

For reference I have a Asus GT-AX6000 with a Asus RT-AX82U node setup this way and the Wifi is responsive and fast.
