  • Head Unit manufacturers can stick their 800 x 480 displays.

Can buy a Motorola e32 with a 90Hz 720p display for $179, these guys continue to take the piss.

Capacitive touch is a nice feature though.

Big numbers in resolution aren't really needed in the head units if you look at it pragmatically. CarPlay and Android Auto are limited with the resolution they can display, and it's illegal to be using the screen to watch videos etc. so why would there be a need for a resolution at or above 720p? Seems like it would just be a measure of having the best brochure numbers; similar to the Samsung 8K TV range… why go that high when the human eye can't tell the difference?

AA can go all the way up to 1080p, 5x the amount of pixels these 480p displays provide.

Readability at 1080p is massively enhanced, maps are clearer and even the album art on services like Spotify are far nicer.

Yes, 480p is usable but in this day and age, they've been charging the same price for crappy 480p displays for at least 6 years.

$400 for what you can buy in a $69 tablet is not acceptable in 2023.

Edit: And on the "Samsung 8K" reference, at 70cm from my head unit, I can tell the difference between the 480p display and the 720p display in my cars.

This comment is inherently dangerous to the car audio industry funnily enough. To reduce a source unit down to its only function being AA or CP is a gross misunderstanding of car audio and audio in general.

The AA and CP functions of these units make up 33% at best of the unit's benefit to upgrading an audio system. The performance of these units above and beyond a cheap tablet with a flashy screen is almost immeasurable. We've lost count of the number of customers that've fallen victim to the AliBaba and eBay perfect fit units with HD screens and AA and CP for cheap, only to have them completely fail and even cause issues to other systems in their vehicles!

@BankstownSoundMarine: But since you can get a decent brand 1DIN non-LCD head unit for a couple of hundred, it makes no sense that adding a shithouse 480p display that probably costs $5 onto that would add $200+ to the price. They are taking the piss.

@BankstownSoundMarine: I hardly care about my comments being dangerous to an industry that is obviously holding us hostage by seemingly agreeing to deny consumers of progress.

My comments about the cheap tablet are specifically around the cost of displays at this point in time. If Motorola can put a 6.5" 720p 90Hz LCD into a $179 phone it is hardly a major part of the BOM on a "$750" head unit.

I bought my XAV-AX100 for around this price in 2017 IIRC, if this is the amount of progress in 6 years it's time to give them a kick up the ass and expect better.

Some of the units you're selling for over $1000 don't even have HD displays yet phones at that price point have had up to 4K displays (Remember the XZ Premium?)

Cos Google Maps looks better in HD, also reversing camera footage. Not asking for HD here, but 800x480 is WVGA, which is a bit ancient.

Not only the display, but the hardware on these are generally slow as well. The only advantage it has over mounting a cheap tablet to your car is security and camera interface.

and it's illegal to be using the screen to watch videos etc

Bit of a non-argument there… if you take that approach, why have a screen at all?

There's very little reason to not go with a 720p screen in these devices… looking at it pragmatically of course.

      • The human eye can definitely tell the difference between a 480p and a 720p 6.8" display, especially at arms length away.

I agree it isn't completely necessary for the usage, but at the same time, it is a hard bargain to sell if the headunit is more pixellated then some factory headunits.

The average joe isn't going to care about the aftermarket headunit sonically, but more what it is visually

  • i know it's a tough ask, but are either of these splash/waterproof?

Cannot recommend them for that purpose, sorry mate.

      • Don't know why someone downvoted that comment of yours. I appreciate the transparency, you get an upvote back for that :)

        • This is OzBargain.
They're stupid enough to let people downvote without consequence (names not listed in downvotes).

  • I assume these are double DIN?

Do you have any similar head units (AA) as Single DIN? Its for an older car with single din metal dash and dont really want to cut it anymore than it is already

  • Cheaper model lacks wireless AA and CP fyi

  • Car audio has given up on headunits, use a DSP and feed it from your phone.

  • Pretty much agree with the commentors above but the car industry killed off DINN modularity headunits in favor for their own funky headunits. If this didnt catch on, i think aftermarket headunits would have been more advanced, but there just isnt enough of a market for them now. As a car ICE company you probably arent looking to invest heaps of money into a product lineup that gives you the fanciest of things, only to sell less than 100,000 units and not make any money.

The only cars that have DINN slots are old ones or very cheap ones, and even those now are coming out with funky LCD screens.

  • Used Supercheap site chat for a price match as I'm on the other side of the country. They agree to price match and eventually give you a voucher code via email for a $251 discount meaning I can pick one up locally for $498.
