Family Crest SA Shiraz 2022
93 Wine Pilot, 2024
"A deep purple, magenta colour here, this is powerfully aromatic. This is a concentrated and slightly earthy style of Shiraz. Big and bold with black fruit notes, chocolate, bay leaves and beefstock. As we move to the palate, the flavours of sweet mocha, coffee beans and dark chocolate move to the fore. There is good focus and intensity and the wine offers firm tannins with good length. It is one for enjoying now and for the next eight years. Really good value, especially if you enjoy the bigger, bolder and more burly style of Shiraz."

This is good wine. Have bought before.

    • @jareds83 thanks for the kind words. Just noticed 10 upvotes from just 39 clicks. Appears a few others think likewise. Enjoy the weekend:-)

  • Also works on Bec Hardy McLaren Vale Shiraz 2023 12pk $120

won't find a better $10 Shiraz in Oz. and honestly knocks most $15-$20 over as well.y missis calls it the Barry White Shiraz, it's big & smooth.& after a few glasses loosens the vocal chords (which actually isn't always a good thing ;-)

    • hahaha - the Barry White Shiraz. Love it.
Enjoy - just the last bit of that Shiraz so trying to make way for the new bottling coming up soon.
      Cheers! RD :-)

  • We're already overstocked on wine.. But will always vouch for this winery; great wine at the price!

    • Kind words - thanks @todayssawyer. Drink well this weekend RD :-)

  • I don't drink but have bought this a few times for the folks and they speak very highly 👍

    • Your folks have impeccable taste - and bloody lucky to have a son/daughter who buys them wine! Hope our daughter does that with gin and sherry when she's older. Cheers! RD ;-)

  • How does this compare to ~$10 wine from Aldi?

I don't know much about wine

@Tmark Whilst we don't supply Aldi (but I have bought grower champagne from ALdI previously!) but are a supplier to Costco in the US and here, it'd be around the same mark. Upside is you are knowing you are supporting a medium sized family business whereas from Aldi the prvenance might not be so readily identifiable though I do know some family producers that do supply them. Essenitally, here you're getting the wholesale price because you're buying in a box of 12 as opposed to single bottles, lowers our cost which we pass on to you. Hope that explains. Cheers! RD :-)

    • their cheaper stuff is hit & miss. Chilean red are fairly good. Their Taylors Shiraz is very good when aged a bit. Their Keepers Gloves port is excellent value @ $5

For me their star wine is the $20 Blackstone Paddock Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

      https://www.aldi.com.au/groceries/liquor/wine/wine-detail/ps…

      • @M00Cow $20 for a Margs Cab is worth a punt for sure. Unfortunately, we can't access them in SA, so Bec and I normally check them out in Ulladulla of all places on the way to Mollymook when we take a break :-)

    • Aldi wines are pretty hit and miss, but the hit ones are great value. My favourite Aldi wine is the el toro Tempranillo, which is a great every day just want an easy to drink red, great with pizza. The el toro reserva wins awards but doesn’t quite hit the spot for me

Bec Hardy is much more consistent, pretty much every wine I’ve had is good to excellent. The Shiraz (in this port) is a ‘’bolder’ wine that suits more contemplative days or to go with a heavier meal (eg red meat).

I pretty much only drink Aldi and Bec Hardy wines, after a few years of being convinced that higher priced wines were the way to go. And, sure, there are plenty of ‘better’ higher priced wines around, but you generally have to go over $20 at least. For me now, $10 wines are totally fine (not all of them - whoever made yellowtail a best selling wine is a genius cos it’s terrible!)

Long way of saying - at least as good as as a good Aldi wine. As long as you like the varietal style
