Can we upgrade Ram to 16GB?

They can solder RAM to the board but can't solder sockets? RAM is one of those things that does go bad. Then what? Toss an entire laptop into the rising landfill, and for no good reason. I despise this about laptops now.

        • Just run a VM with adequate RAM.

        • Yeah I've seen laptops at work that were near the end of their warranty.. They had to replace the entire mainboard for a singular Memory chip going bad. It's literally just planned obsolescence, it doesn't make the device significantly smaller in the case of a laptop I feel.

  • Thanks! How is Acer for longevity? Good build quality?

    • +1

Traditionally not, especially with the Aspire series, but it has got better on the back of trying to enter the EDU market etc. You could do a lot worse at this price point

Thanks. It's so hard to buy a windoze machine after using a Macbook pro 13 incher from 2015 (Got it for $1300! via OZB deal).

        • If it still works fine, why not use Open Core Patcher to get it on Ventura, and replace the battery? Could probably get another ~2 years out of it.

      • Traditionally is it even usable say at 5 years?

        • It can last 5 as long as it is not abused. However, coming from a mb pro to a budget laptop may be challenging

          • @shxhshzhz: I have tried to swap to windoze machines but never found one with a good trackpad. MBP track pad is so bullet proof. Almost never registers fake gestures etc.

I have tried a $1500 HP, $1600 DELL but got rid of them in favour of better trackpad. I can't carry a mouse around.

I don't abuse my computers but do need to open and close few times per day.

    • Mine's like 7 years old, and was 2nd hand.

I have to treat it very gently, the hinge will literally snap if i treat it like my Macbook.

With my Macbook - abuse it, and it can handle it, no problem.

With my Acer - treat it with GREAT care, or it will literally snap. This includes opening the lid, that is the most stressful time.

Other than that, the Acer was GREAT value.

Much better than the 588 at bing lee good find. Try matching at bing lee if you don't support Gerry, however Bing Lee online staff are extremely stubborn

  • Anyone know the sRGB/NTSC coverage for this screen? Not expecting miracles but good to know.

    • +1

Bit of a delayed reply, but for anyone still interested I've measured one: 56% sRGB, 40% DCI-P3. 400:1 contrast ratio and 214 nits max brightness. Viewing angles from hell. It's the worst sort of TN panel.

    That's the first ZEN2 under 7000 I've seen.

  • Need a laptop for my 14yo son purely for school work and light youtube.
This a viable option or a ~$700 lenovo chromebook?
I personally like the CB for simplicity, weight, and battery life. But a full fledged laptop has some small upsides.
    Any insight is appreciated.

Windows laptops and chromebooks are very different beasts.
If you have $700 budget, I would look for a refurbished 2yo surface laptop with warranty
      Like this for $630..

For this money you would be way better off getting a refurb ThinkPad or Probook.

He will most certainly drop it a few times. Consider that too.

  • Im sure he will. My concerns come from him not being tech savvy (only ever used an iphone, no pc or android). Pretty sure with pc he will get malware instantly.
I will be sending the pc interstate so i wont be able to fix or supervise. His mum has even less tech exp than him.
A CB would be a safer more rail road experience for a child no? Though a pc is appealing to me…. argh

Get the Chromebook so you can sleep at night

If this is the $700 Lenovo you are talking about, save $100 and get the Acer with the bigger screen

    • Chromebook is simple and great for younger primary kids but a super frustrating experience for teens. Tons of compatibility issues still. Go with a pc.

    • Time to learn … so scary to try something new!? … and he can have the joy of needing the hing(s) replaced or learn how to as these POS's suffer from that, not just one in 100, 50, 10 or 5 … literally every single unit!

    • Besides he will need to game as well. I have a few nephews and ALL of them game. It must a younger generation thing to game alot.

  • This deal or the dell deal is better?

    • I’m interested in this too. 15% cashrewards @ Dell, so price is basically the same.

As a AMD fan boy, its a bit disappointing to see them release a CPU with the AMD Ryzen 3 7320u naming but its using ZEN 2 architecture.

Broken ass hinges a norm on this and all cheap Acer rubbish at this time!

  • Anyone bought the care option from HN for this? Is it worrh it.

LPDDR5 speed is 5500 according to Acer, which is pretty amazing at this price point, and will help for any retro 720p gaming. Unfortunately this notebook has a TN screen, not IPS, according to info I received from Acer today.

Battery life, staying cool under load, and quiet fan noise are all standouts for this notebook IMO.

    • I don't think Acer support themselves know what the specifications are.Which is expected! It definitely has an IPS display as indicated by all the reviews.

      https://laptopmedia.com/au/review/acer-aspire-3-a315-24p-rev…

"Acer Aspire 3 (A315-24P) is equipped with a Full HD IPS panel, model number BOE NV156FHM-N48 (BOE0A56). It comes with a 60Hz refresh rate. Its diagonal is 15.6″ (39.6 cm), and the resolution – 1920 x 1080p."

      • +1

I've seen that (good) review. I'd love it to be true in this case, "what we are really happy about is the fact there is only one display option – a 1080p IPS unit. This kills almost every competition in its price range."

I just know that different markets around the globe can ship with different components, including screens, and sometimes the Australian market gets older stuff. If anyone has purchased or seen this in store, perhaps they can clear it up for us?

This Acer is not on shelves here in Darwin for me to check.

I did see an similarly specced Asus notebook for $719 here, which I loved except for the lousy TN screen. https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/asus-vivobook-go-156-inches-r…

If this Acer has an IPS screen for $500, I'd get one sent up.

  • OOS :(

  • ANY 3X USB A'S?

  • I bought Acer Aspire 3 in March, the display sucks, the color is bleak, and viewing angle is limited. You better check it out in store before you make the purchase.

    • The one I bought probably was not IPS, but it's the worst FHD screen I've seen so far.
