[Pre Order] Samsung 49" QLED Ultrawide Gaming Monitor - CHG90 $749.50 (Was $1499.00) Delivered @ Samsung

1000

Pre-Order - Shipping from 23/06/23 according to the link.

Essentially the equivalent of two 27" 1080p monitors side-by-side. Bit big for me personally but if you've got the room for it and can take advantage of it's size then not a bad deal.

Note: Reviewers have pointed out that the monitor has relatively low PPI. Should be fine for gaming (especially if you've got a lower spec GPU) but text and images might be a bit blurry. Also no USB-C.

This would be great if it was 1440 high. At 1080 high its pretty disappointing.

    • +5

Yeah agreed. I'll personally be waiting for the 1440p equivalent to come down a bit more, but this is a decent deal for those who don't need/care about the resolution as much.

      • -3

At this price? Its a no brainer! The only thing that's holding me back is I've already bought 2 monitors just in the last 3 years when as before, it takes me at least 5 years or more even before I buy another one.

It still so tempting to bang the gong. Must resist….

        • +1

Haha the PPI patrol will be coming for you now lol.

But yeah it's not a big deal if you don't mind some blockiness. If you've never used a 1440p or 4k monitor I doubt you'd even notice any difference. I'd be switching from a 1440p 27 inch monitor so it'd be noticeable for me, hence the hesitation.

          • @edgaritsthepopo: The ones I bought before were a 1080 and 1440 and for the life of me, I cant spot the difference. If there is, it must be very minute.

Heck. I can't even spot rhe diff between 1080 vs 4K when watching movies lol.

So I guess, I'm lucky in that regards. 🤩

@pacificstorm: Shoud have gone to specsavers

              • -3

@DeToxin: What and end my luck? No thanks. In this case, rather be blind 😎

Anyhow, Specsavers are antithesis of their commercials.

            • @pacificstorm: also depends on the size of monitor you are using between 1080 and 1440

and to an extent, yes that may be more visible when using productivity apps vs. gaming or watching movies.

              • @SNMP: Both monitors are ultrawides and they look the same all across the board. Maybe because monitors in general has more pixel density than a TV would? Dunno, please someone further enlighten us on this fascinating subject.

        • At this price it's a waste of money on a monitor that was discontinued 4 years ago…

      • -2

If the graphic is still sharp, I think it is a good buy. Specially graphic card is so damn expensive now.

        • If you're sitting less than 2ft from this monitor or will not be "sharp". It's essentially the same pixel density as a 1080p 27" monitor, which without question looks crap compared to a 1440p 27"

    • +6

Don’t know why all the negatives, in 2023 1080P at this height will more often than not exhibit some blockiness.

      • +7

People on here ain't too bright

        • +8

You can get rid of the 'on here'

        • +2

          Yeah they are lacking nits

      • agree! I had a 27" 1440p gaming at home which was way better than my work 24" 1080p x 2
Till work was throwing away a 4 yo 32" Dell Ultrasharp IPS 4K - now I cant get over how amazing the 4K is so when the Dell Gaming 4K popped up i had to get it.

Dual 32" 4K is incredible. I dont think I will upgrading any further until virtual reality or something

        • Right on, even 1440P offers enough sharpness at 27-28” to be “decent” at viewing distance. For 32” you’d definitely want 4k

    • +4

Needs to be 1600 high really.

    • +4

As someone who has daily-driven ultrawides/super-ultrawides for nearly a decade (2560x1080, 3840x1600, and now 5440x1440), I can confirm that 1080p is a pretty underwhelming vertical res. It was the cause for my first upgrade and I would never go back.

      • Can 100% agree with this. Moved from a 22” 1080p to 24” 1440p many years ago and could not go back. Now I’m on a 43” 4K and 2 x 27” 4K’s and I feel I could still go higher. But then, I do software development so have a LOT of different windows open plus a lot of staring at code and photoshop that all benefit from lots of screen real estate and high dpi.

  • +2

I was looking through the specs thinking "what's the catch, this is too good to be true!", yeah 1080p at this size is like putting a motorbike motor into a Ferrari. Oh well, good luck to those that actually buy this

    • -1

Seriously, it's ludicrous to be expecting anything else at this price point. It's not a "catch," it's just what you would expect.

      • +6

I was actually referring to the discount, what on earth makes this monitor a $1500 RRP monitor?

        • Definitely not worth $1500. At half price though you ‘could’ buy two and strap them together to have a crazy curved 53” 4K Franken-monitor (Frankenstein’s Monitor?) with effective screen dimensions of 1195mm x 672mm @3840x2160 total resolution! That’s a 1.2m wide 4K monitor. Might need to get the glue and angle grinder out to shave off some of the bezels….

    • +1

Less chance of the Ferrari catching fire…

  • -3

Just buy it now and think later…..be quick! It's 50% off and it's lowest ever…… This post will hit at least 200+ in a couple of hours.

    • +4

But you dont want to regret it later. I thought it was great until I saw the resolution. It is pretty poor for this day, but depends on what you use it for. I use my 49" Samsung 5120 x 1440 every day 10 hrs a day for work and the sharpness is fantastic. If using for productivity / work, I can comfortably work with 4 screens on the display (Mail, Word and a couple of Excel programs)

    • Just turned 2 hours and 27 people liked it

  • +2

Would be a great sim rig monitor. I use the CRG9 (1440p) but honestly for a cheaper setup that needs less GPU this would not be a huge difference I reckon.

    • +2

Yeah if you want a big ultrawide without having to fork out for a powerful GPU to go alongside it, this would suit that purpose.

However to be honest, IMO 1080p is unacceptable in this day and age. It feels like watching a VHS after you've become accustomed to DVD.

I think a standard size 1440p display would be preferable over this.

  • +1

Just curious, if this is a "preorder", where does the "was" price come from?

  • +1

I think this price… it should be 2 QHD not FHD ah wait it is a new product.

  • WQHD is a wide 2k resolution, not 4k?

    • +1

yes, quad HD, 4 times a HD (720p).

  • Good for city dwellers. Doesn’t deliver to regional areas (NSW)

  • +3

Waste of desk space with this large low resolution monitor.

  • -1

this is a very good deal, if i did not buy a dfhd monitor 2 months ago for 949, i will buy this.
    much cheaper and better brand.

4K is not that useful for a monitor, it makes everything very small, and i have to make them bigger use scaler…
it also consumes much more graphic resources.

4K is maybe good for a TV in my view.

    • +2

4K at 32in for desktop use is great.

  • +1

One nagging question, when playing games on it, would the images be stretched or more details would be viewed as opposed to non ultrawides? Does it depend on the game whether its been optimised to 32:9 or 21:9 wide? If so, any links to lists of games that support these aspect ratios? Thanks.

  • +1

yeah its not the 5K version. it would be worth it if it was teh 5k version because the resolution would be the equivalent of dual 1440p screens

  • ok if you wanna excuse not to buy this check out the reviews for this monitor.

    • what do you mean? most webistes im seeing are averaging 4.5*!

  • +1

IMO hard to recommend for a VA panel,
for either a IPS or a 1440p, yes definitely, but 1080p VA panel, no thanks

    • +2

VA is perfectly fine. I game on a 3422DWG and it’s excellent. And I say this coming from an IPS before it. It really depends on the panel.

    • Samsung actually makes some good VA panels regarding response time, also you will get no IPS glow. IPS glow is much worse the more angle there is (off-axis polarization) so you'll be dodging a bullet there on such a big display. That and the contrast.

You are right about 1080p though. It's basically for flight simmers or racers.

  • +1

Buying direct from Samsung can be a very his or miss experience. Countless stories of customers going through all sorts is sheningans.

    • Same can be said for most computer stores…

  • Looks like pre-order is done & dusted

  • For that size, they still do 1080p XD

  • 1080p yo

  • +3

Honestly i know people are criticising the 1080p aspect of this monitor, but for the price its quite the banger.
I downscaled my pc settings to accomodate my 3070 to play at 1080p on my Tv, i dont think its that bad honestly, yes you get less blur at 4k but the experience is perfectly fine.

  • All I see when you clicknin the link is to enter email for stock alerts. You cannot even order it.

    • maxed out

  • -1

Looks like people got baited into the 50% off advertising for a mediocre monitor.

  • -1

If there was ever something that was too big, this would be it.

  • Using this for about a year for work, it's excellent for the price. Not sure what others are on about being blocky etc

    • Not sure what others are on about being blocky etc

I guess you are just used to it, but it has a PPI of 81, which is frankly disgusting for text etc. I have a 27" 1080P (same PPI as this deals monitor) next to my 34" 3440 x 1440P which is 110 PPI, the difference is night and day, one is a pleasure to use, the 27" is just ugly as all hell with the blocky text. 24" is seen as the largest size for 1920x1080 which is a PPI of 92, and even then that's more for gaming. Ideally you want 110 and above for text.

At home I have a 4K 27" next to a 38" and I am reminded how bad the buy works IT did on the 27" all the more when I use this setup.

      • Actually it's fine with text and spreadsheets. Maybe my expectations are different from yours

        • My expectations are based on using monitors with a decent PPI. If I had not used anything but the the 27” 1080P then maybe I too would think it’s fine with text and spreadsheets.

Plenty of people probably think chuck steak is fine too, but once you’ve had a decent cut of meat you realise that it’s sub standard.

          Ignorance is bliss.

          • @snuke: If you know anything about cooking, chuck steak is awesome

  • Why does it say pre-order at samsung's website, makes it sound like a upcoming new release lol (other than it literally being a pre-order as oos).

  • Let me know when the G9 OLED is half price (yes I know it's barely even out).

  • resolution - 3840*1080

With 49 inch screen, essentially two 24" Full HD montor joined together….
