While the focus is often on Tokyo, it can frequently be cheaper to fly into Kansai Airport in Osaka, and then you can travel south west to Hiroshima, nearby to Kyoto or Nara, and up north to Tokyo, so it's quite well situated!
It's summer and speaking from personal experience it's roasting and humid at this time of year, but still wonderful and at least it's warmer than back in Aus!
