850

Similar deal to one posted here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/781602. But you are not locked into a 24 month(!) plan.

Samsung S23 128GB + Samsung Watch5 LTE 44mm for $798

How?

The catalogue states $400 off ANY Samsung S23 ($749 for 128GB model) if you go on $49 month-to-month. The critical information summary says that you can leave after one month.

Therefore, out of pocket is $798 if you leave after one month.

*Watch is via redemption.

  • The critical information summary says that you can leave after one month.

That’s if there’s no voucher issued. Since there’s a $400 off on Samsung range, it’s tied to a 12 month contract from what I’ve been told this morning via call to my local JB (Modbury)

    • +1

I am providing what is in writing https://www.telstra.com.au/help/critical-information-summari…. This may be store dependent. It would be good to see if anyone has taken this offer.

    • +2

$400 discount =/= a gift card being issued. I think the OP is correct in his interpretation of this one.

      • +1

Confirmed via another JB store (Canberra city). They quoted the 12 months if you’re porting Telstra to JB since they’re different systems. He said having a brand new number shouldn’t be a problem and the offer is 110% too good to be missed

        • So JB and Telstra are different system now? So they will treat Telstra like other provider if thats what you mean

      • +1

You are correct and so is OP.

As far as Telstra is concerned its a month to month contract. JB is actually the one paying.

JB hi-fi cover the $400, it would be unlawful to give you a critical information summary stating month to month and then to say you're locked in

        • Yes as far as Telstra are concerned there is no voucher to be refunded. The $400 is just how jb process the discount.

  • Might be worth seeing if they match the Harvey Norman $100 gift card offer, and if that's elligible for HN's S23 deal on their $69/month Optus contract. Whoever says yes is who you go with.

This also seems to work out as just over $1100 for the S23 Ultra 256GB if I'm reading this right?

  • it says min. plan cost $49, if its true, its a steal
for s23+ min plan cost $1656
    s23ultra $2136

    • I think they are different options. The greater the minimum plan cost, the greater the discount.

      • Yep. But the very important difference is the minimum term. 24 months for $69 plan, negating the discount.
Hard to tell if you could apply that discount to the other S23's

  • Bummer I'm on Boost so can't do it.

    • just sign up a new plan and use your boost sim in the phone

      • Says you need to port in?

        • I can't see T&Cs for the $400-off deal specifically online. But the catalgue just says "connect", and then excludes existing Telstra/Boost services.

For gift cards it seems to include new services though:

*Bonus JB Gift Card offers are only available to port-in customers and customers who connect a new service to Telstra.

        • I take it that will cost you $49 more as you can cancel after 1 month. That is just continue to use your boost Sim, sign up for a new Telstra account but don't use it and cancel after 1 month

          • @crazy horse: So by reckoning, back of envelope calcs. $749 for s23 can be had for approx $700 with discounted Coles MCDs and if you're really motivated by discounted TCN cards for a further 10% discounted bringing price down closer to $630.. + $100 Gift Voucher and + Value of what you could flog galaxy watch for.. $250 minimum? So end price could be sub $300 bucks?

            Nort bad.

  • +1

Website seems to say you get a $100 gift card as well as the Galaxy Watch….

    • T&C says gift card not valid with JB Mobile offers…but if you ask nicely you never know!

      • +1

Denied just now at Highpoint Vic

    • You also get a $100 gift card. Bought a s23+ yesterday from JB hifi Green Hills.

  • +1

Thank you OP, managed to get the deal. The $49 plan paperwork does not say anything about GC or 12/24 month committment, min is 1 month as far as i can see. I got th $400GC and got S23 for $750. Also got $100 GC after purchase (as advertised on the website) and claimed watch via samsung redemption.

    • Nice one!

    • +1

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like a deal I really shouldn't miss. Will definitely try my luck tmr

    • Sorry, I am confused. Did the $100 GC after purchase come from JB or Telstra?

      • +2

I was able to get the $100 GC also. It is from JB. If you go onto the s23 page, it says you can get $100 GC for purchasing the phone. My salesman even checked the exclusions on the offer listed here and said it was fine.

So i paid $749 for the phone + $49 plan (one month) and got $100 GC. Also claimed the watch.

Seems like a really good deal.

        • Cheers!

        • It’s really a bargain. Once in blue moon sort of deal

        • Do you know if you can sign up and get an entirely new phone number? I'd like to keep my current plan so would just cancel this JB plan after a month without ever using it.

          • +1

@Timbo94: I ported in, but they initally said there might be issues because I have an existing telstra account (it ended up being fine).

But I did ask about new numbers and Im pretty sure they said it was fine.

        • Can i ask, if you log into your telstra app, does it confirm that theres no contract for the plan? Like, theres no end date?

          • +1

@Bambini88: I dont see any end date. It definitely is no contract (but is post paid).

I dont have the option to turn off an auto renew or anything though. Just to cancel. I guess ill need to set a calendar reminder.

      • From JB.

    • How come you got a $400 gift card instead of a discount?
I'm keen on the deal but for $400 off, not a gift card.

      • +2

thats a gift card towards the phone

      • Yeah what BlackorRed said. Its technically a gift card you get (but must go towards the phone). The reciept has the phone as $1149, with $400 being paid off by the GC. I got an additional $100 GC for use on a future purchase.

        • I'm currently at JB and the guy is refusing to do the $400 off with a no lock in $49 plan. He says it's only for a 24 month plan. Sigh

          • @tdth99: Its pretty clear in the catalogue that its no contract (And minimum cost $49) to get $400 off any s23 phone.

            • @0lllllll0: I know right. I think I've got him on that, now he's quibbling on the $100 gift card, despite me saying I'm not buying a phone plan, it's outright

              • @tdth99: OntheMark below is saying there was an email saying the $100 GC isnt to be included.

On the website it does say "not in conjuntion with any JB Mobile offer". I think I just got lucky getting the deal on day 1. I wasnt actually expecting to get it when I asked. (Though, my salesman checked exclusions on something and said it was fine yesterday, maybe internal docs changed)

                • +1

@0lllllll0: Oh wow. I got lucky then! Managed to sweet talk them into it.
Absolutely incredible deal with the gift card, watch and discount.
You always know it's a good deal if head office has to send an email to clarify conditions ;-)

          • @tdth99: Some people had that issue with some staff. But it is technically $49 min cost and $400GC that JB has advertised

  • +1

How much out of pocket for the ultra if you leave after one month?

    • +1

      $1649 - $400 +$49 = $1298 (and u also get $100 GC and free galaxy watch 5 LTE 44mm which is between $600-450$ in market)

      • +1

Facebook marketplace is overwhelmed with watch 5 LTEs. I see prices as low as $300-350 for unopened boxes.

      • also $49 plan is on offer with S23 only, not plus or ultra?

        • so it works with any s23 phone. Just got one. No go with $100 gift card.
So final price for phone + watch + 1mo of Telstra is
          S23 - $798
          S23+ - $1048
          S23U - $1298

          • @interlocal: Interesting the $100 is the promo mentioned on s23 website and many got it straight away.

            • @dealhunting007: it says "not valid with any JB Mobile offers", and the deal they select in Salesforce is "JB Mobile $400 off".
Could be it was not the case yesterday.

            • @dealhunting007: Hello, can you give me the link for the $100 gift card on JB HIFI web? I'm at JB HI FI and I can't find it

              Thank you

          • @interlocal: @interlocal whats the Voucher Repayment Fee you paid? how much was the gift card
            Can you write the numbers

            Thanks

  • Does anyone know the cheapest esim plan going around at the moment?

  • +2

I just picked up my Galaxy S23+ from this deal - didn't get the $100 additional gift card unfortunately as others have reported - manager said that an email went out this morning to say that they weren't to give out the $100 GC in addition to the $400 discount :-(

Still a pretty good deal - I was going to post it myself after I confirmed that it was possible to get it, but Telstra stuffed around with my order and it didn't get approved until last night.

    • did you get the phone straight away after sign up?

      • +1

I went in yesterday afternoon to place the order, but wasn't able to grab the phone until this morning because of the Telstra delay - they said that it tends to only happen to about 1% of orders.

They did offer that I could pay the $1399 up front and go back to get a refund for the $400 from the online gift card once Telstra had processed the order, but I decided to just leave it until everything had been processed.

        • did they give you tax invoice for the phone?

          • +1

@BlackorRed: Yep - already used it to put in the claim for the Galaxy Watch5

            • @OnTheMark: thanks, im flying out on Sunday so will sign up tomorrow and get the phone on the spot to claim TRS

  • I signed up the $89 x 24months with $1400 gift card plan, from the T&C, it said if I cancel early, I only need to paid pro rata of $800 voucher repayment fee, it didn't mention any 50% of balance of monthly fee like my old JB Telstra plan signed few years ago. Is that mean if I cancel the plan immediately, I only need to pay $766.67? That didn't sound right that I can gain $544.33 by just sign up a plan.

    • Do they have this in store now? $1400 gift card on $89 plan? When did you get this?

      • yesterday, on the catalogue OP posted

        • Oh okay, but the $1400 gift card goes to the S23 Ultra right? Not to be used for other stuff in JB?

    • sounds like a good deal if they don't charge half of the the remaining plan for cancellation? Is this really the case or it might be just a miss in the T&C?

    • This works if the phone is outright with a $1400 gift card + your contribution, and the plan is not linked to the phone (like the $49 plan). Has anyone tried? Do you get a JB HI-FI receipt for the phones full cost?

      • yes you do.

    • Hi there, I have the same question too, today at the JB I asked for the s23+ 256GB, the staff keep saying that the phone itself cost $1399, or i can signup $89/mth plan for 24 months and pay nothing for the plan, but I can cancel anytime just need to repay the voucher. I didnt know what the voucher is at the time and I dont understand how it works.

so in this case, is it I can just pay $89 on the spot and I can take the phone away. then i cancel the plan and repay the $800 voucher only? i end up paying only $889 for the phone? :)

  • I was just told in store you have to pay the voucher back pro rata if you leave the 49 plan early

    • It doesn’t say on CIS

      • In store ad says min plan cost 49 and under says 24 month plan. So its actually a 24 month plan with 0 to leave. But thats for service plan, not phone. Phone falls under the leave section 6 in jb terms of service where it explains pro rata discount fees for leaving early.
Not arguing with you, its very misleading. Jb bloke said they had one a couple months ago you could do this for a 200 discount but rhei time they sharpened their pencils.

        • You pay for the phone outright in the store. Doesn't appear to be linked to the plan

        • Yeah it’s quite confusing, every JB staff has different answers. It should be across the board.

          • @AirJordan23: Definitely not linked to the plan. Just cancelled the plan 😊

            • @jm7: So you're confirming theres no pro rata fee for the $400 discount on cancellation of the $49 plan?

              • @poodlfat: Correct. Telstra have also confirmed no cost to cancel after 1 month. It's effectively an outright phone plus a month to month plan. Telstra can't cancel the plan at a later date so I am going to contact them at the end of my billing cycle.

                • +1

@jm7: I rang around and found another JB that confirmed that I won't get a pro rata discount bill so all good. Thanks for the conversation cos it pushed me to look further and now I'll pull the trigger. Thanks also @AirJordan23

                  • @poodlfat: No worries, I can say that you can get the $100 GC as well after paying $749 + $49 (1 month).

                    • @AirJordan23: Done. Got the GC too. Had another 5% off with gift cards from work and gonna get gst back next month. Ended up with a S23 256gb for the missus and a plus for me. Gonna sell the watches too so will end up around 800 out of pocket for both phones. This is by far the most mental deal i have ever done. One for the books. Unbelievable.

                      • @poodlfat: That’s a good deal, that is why I signed up as well for $798 - $100GC = $698 for a phone and a watch is not bad at all.

                        • @AirJordan23: s23 range are proberbly worth <$700 aud.

its such a rip off. no sdcard, no dual sims no charger and they have the nerve to charge > $800 for their phones?

                          • @shegeloaf: You maybe right, it is a <$700 phone. Last year managed to get an S22 for $350 after a discount and $500 off trade-in bonus

                      • @poodlfat: Based on other comments, sounds like you were lucky getting the $100 gift card as well. Nice job!

                      • -1

@poodlfat: first of all the phone is worth peanuts.. but i geuss its cheap when you add in the watch.

    • +1

I ended up having to speak to 4 different people at JB, and got 4 different answers for everything I asked.
I'd be very surprised if this was the case. You effectively pay the phone outright whilst redeeming a $400 gift card they do for you on the spot.
There's no avenue I can see for them to recoup that $400 gift card, that has already been redeemed.

I also managed to snag the extra $100 gift card for later use, by arguing I wasn't taking up a JB Mobile deal, I was buying the phone outright, then buying a plan outright. Which is true, you set the plan up first, paying the $49 first month.

      • have you cancelled the $49 plan yet?

        • Nah I figured I'd keep it till closer to the date. Use it in the old phone or try the LTE in the Watch if it arrives in time

          • +2

@tdth99: You need to wait until the last day of your billing cycle to cancel it if you want to use the service for the first month. Telstra have confirmed there's no cancellation fee. I'm going to cancel on 15 July as I joined today.

            • @jm7: Didn't you just say you already cancelled the plan?

              • @poodlfat: I was chatting with them. I didn't realise if I did it they were going to cancel it today and I want to use the data.

                Message from the chat person:
No need to pay anything while cancelling the plan. The services have been disconnected the payment details will be removed automatically.

  • What happens if I return the phone? Do I receive $400 gift card plus the remainder returned to my credit card? With a free watch?

    • Has anyone tried this?

    • The watch redemption is directly from Samsung so I'm assuming JB won't have visibility of the redemption 🤔

      • Having said that, I wonder what happens if I return the phone and someone tries to claim the watch using the same IMEI

    • -1

Why return. Just sell it at higher price on marketplace for cash.

      • I can get more than $1149 for a 128gb s23?

        • U can try, unless u want to buy something else from JB. They ll likely give u whole amount in GC for change of mind
