Ah 💩, here we go again.

In case there is anyone new to these prepaid gift card deals, here are some tips (and I will link out to the Gift Card FAQ page where possible):

    • +1

      Thanks for this comment!

Can these gift cards be bought with discounted Coles gift cards? The T&Cs in OP says you can't use these to buy other gift cards, but what about the other way around?

      • +7

        No.

Coles had their payment processing updated on 19 April 2023 to automatically block anyone from using any gift cards issued by Coles Group to purchase third-party gift cards at Coles.

        • can we use perfect eftpos cards to buy these?

          • +1

@ozbargainerlife1: It is pretty much a toss up these days.

I don’t think Coles has set up blocks for Perfect eftpos gift cards when you are trying to purchase a Coles Mastercard gift card. However, you could always have a staff member stop you from using a prepaid gift card as a payment method when trying to purchase a gift card. (It can happen.)

Having said that, Blackhawk Network (the Perfect eftpos gift card issuer) has implemented redemption limits for Perfect eftpos gift cards, Activ Visa gift cards and OnlyONE Visa gift cards at supermarkets. Generally speaking, trying to redeem more than ~$390 and trying to redeem more than one of these gift cards in quick succession is very likely to trigger error code 12 (Invalid Transaction) from Blackhawk Network, but who knows what the restrictions are nowadays.

            • +4

@WookieMonster: Just used eftpos card for $400 last week in some transactions and it was succeeded only for first card. Even i tried to use second card for another $100 in another machine(coles self checkout) immediately after that, it got declined. So maximum $400 or 1 card including different checkouts (did not try manned checkout). If someone used before you then bad luck.

              • +3

@R n b: Own experience: tried to use perfect giftcard to buy $400 worth Ultimate card at selfcheckout without any issues. Then tried to use another perfect card on the next checkout machine showed invalid transaction.

            • +1

@WookieMonster: Should we make complaints against Blackhawk Network to AFCA? Surely they can't just do what they want, especially when it's not communicated to the gift card holders.

              • @gengulphus: You cannot lodge complaints about Perfect eftpos gift cards (at least the ones with card numbers starting with 638947) with AFCA, because Blackhawk Network is not a member of AFCA.

You can try to complain about OnlyONE Visa gift cards or Activ Visa gift cards with AFCA by lodging complaints against Indue or Heritage Bank (respectively), but the terms and conditions for OnlyONE Visa gift cards and Activ Visa gift cards both state that they can implement spending restrictions for “security reasons”:

For security reasons, including where we suspect fraud or other illegal activity, we may restrict the number of transactions or value of transactions you can make with the Card, prevent a transaction, or stop the use of the Card.

          • +1

@ozbargainerlife1: Not sure why this was downvoted. It's a perfectly good question. I have one of these I'm looking to offload and this deal essentially allows you to use the money on it online and get $5 extra.

          • +1

@ozbargainerlife1: I ended up using my perfect eftpos card to buy it. Had $5.50 left over so I got some KFC. The coles mastercard doesn't work on much, but it did work on the DCS estore using paypal as the processor. Every other website failed or complained it doesn't have 3D Secure.

        • +1

Interesting, that's quite recent. Thanks for the information.

        • +3

The oracle or gift cards is in the house! 😊 Highly appreciate your wealth of knowledge with respect to GC's.

Coles Mastercard Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase any other gift card sold at Coles.

@WookieMonster Apologies if asked elsewhere - I tried to look but wasn't successful. Would this apply to Apple GC's being purchased from places like Woolies?

          • @KangaDrew:

Would this apply to Apple GC's being purchased from places like Woolies?

            Not necessarily.

I interpret Coles Mastercard Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase any other gift card sold at Coles as a Coles policy, not an InComm policy. I don’t think InComm are as bothered about their gift cards being used to purchase gift cards as Blackhawk Network is… I mean, Blackhawk Network printed in big writing on Activ Visa gift card packaging produced in December 2022 Cannot be used to purchase Gift Cards.

You should be using Coles Mastercard gift cards to pay for Apple gift cards at Woolworths (and BIG W), but:

            • You may have a staff member stop you if they notice you trying to use prepaid gift cards as a payment method and they don’t want you to do that.

            • Woolworths could one day implement automatic blocks (much like what they did for Activ Visa gift cards and Perfect eftpos gift cards last year when trying to use those to pay for some gift cards sold at Woolworths). I would be a little surprised if that actually happened one day…

            • @WookieMonster: Mastercard can use anywhere, why do you need to buy gift card?

              • +2

                @babeface:

                Mastercard can use anywhere

                Nope.

You can only use the Coles Mastercard gift cards in this deal at merchants that choose to accept prepaid Mastercard gift cards. That means:

                • The merchant must accept prepaid Mastercard gift cards as a payment method. For example, some online merchants (e.g. Prezzee, Woolworths Group gift card portal, Reward Gateway) may refuse to process payments from Coles Mastercard gift cards, because they are not tied to a specific cardholder and are missing security features usually found on debit/credit cards. Additionally, if you are instore and the staff member sees you wanting to use a Coles Mastercard gift card, they could always say no.

                • For card-present transactions, the merchant must accept swipe payments. For example, I was at a cafe earlier this week where they only accepted contactless payments, which means this prepaid gift card would not be accepted.

why do you need to buy gift card?

You don’t need to buy gift cards using Coles Mastercard gift cards, but there are two main reasons I can think of where someone may want to use Coles Mastercard gift cards to pay for other gift cards:

                • Prepaid gift cards - especially Coles Mastercard gift cards - are particularly vulnerable to fraudulent transactions. Some people really do not want to put up with the hassle of lodging transaction disputes and waiting a number of weeks for a replacement gift card to be sent to them.

                • You can use Coles Mastercard gift cards as a payment method for purchasing discounted gift cards at plenty of merchants, which allows you to stack the savings (or stack savings and bonuses). For example, the commenter above probably wants to use Coles Mastercard gift cards to purchase Apple gift cards the next time Woolworths runs a 20x Everyday Rewards points promotion on Apple gift cards in-store.

        • that's no good. i was only interested in these 10% off deals to convert gift cards i got from flybuys.

    • +4

Also, these card can be easily hacked,
follow the below steps to get a replacement card.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13264538/redir
you will get one, it just takes time.

      • +1

I'm awaiting a dispute resolution on a card but it may be declined as it was a little over 60 days in reporting. I hadn't used for a while before noticing.

        • Disputing transaction will result the remaining of the card balance block while investigation on going.

          • +1

@a1234my: That's just one reason to spend all the balance as soon as you notice a fraudulent transaction.

    • +1

@WookieMonster thanks for the tips super helpful! To activate the card can you just do that yourself at a self checkout or do you need a staff member to do it? Thanks!

      • +1

The checkout automatically requests approval for the gift card purchase from the gift card issuer after you successfully pay for the gift card at the checkout. If the purchase is approved, the gift card will be automatically activated, although there may be a delay before the gift card is actually activated and you can access/redeem the balance on the gift card.

    • Hey @WookieMonster , do you know if there are any issues with using these Coles MC to buy Ultimate/TCN Gift Cards at Woolworths 20x Points promo? Hoping I can double stack Coles MC > Ultimate for an upcoming purchase.

      • +1

I have not heard of anyone being blocked by a Woolworths checkout for using Coles Mastercard gift cards as a payment method for Ultimate or TCN gift cards, but it something Woolworths could implement at any time.

        • +1

          Nice one, cheers :)

  • +2

    oh no! out of $$$

  • +5

Past few similar promotion couldn't find any stock in 2 Coles around me

  • +1

Have they improved security on these against "brute force" attacks?

Had a couple compromised from about 10 I bought over time (been sitting for many months since buying). Eventually replaced but a hassle to deal with and you have to claim within certain time of the fraud happening which you won't know until you try to use the card.

You will see this advice in previous deals but best to only buy for immediate use.

    • +3

according to preceding deal seems theyve done (fukkall) changes

  • +1

Cool. Been using these for petrol lately.

Need 2 per month so thats another 6k i need lol

  • will wait for the online 10% off deal again. (I know they only just did it, but I can wait) Sometimes the cards through flybuys deals stuffs your offers for ages, so not worth it to me.

    • What do you use them for? I can’t use mine to pay for bills, eBay, PayPal, Coles online. Just seem to be restricted everywhere. PM me if you have any ideas.

      • not sure what you are doing wrong? Last time I used them to pay charities for eofy. You can use them anywhere? not sure what the problem is? I have used the physical cards in the past in pubs, restaurants etc etc. I just don't like to buy too many due to the possible hacking issues. As soon as I bought the ones online, I used them straight away. Others use them for ATO bills etc. Just add it like a credit card.

        • Yeah I used some straight away but now they seem to be blocked. Others are having the same issue. Bit of a pain.

          • @HereToSave: best to ring them and find out what the issue is. Have you checked the balances on the cards to make sure nobody else has used them?

            • @souths123: They’re online only cards. Balances are full. I’ve been trying to contact them. They’re phones are not accepting calls.

  • +1

This limit of 5 gift cards per flybuys account per day - is it a hard limit? Or if buying on store B and store C, the 10% discount will still show up?

    • +1

      hard limit.

      • Thanks… not great but again the good thing is I dont have to to take the week off work driving around entire VIC looking for stock lol.

    • +2

the system will not apply 10% discount if you reach the limit

      • Thanks!

  • +2

WoW someone desperate for money… !

Is it aimed to get cash from people at 7.5% interest instead of going to bank to get commercial loan at 12%…!

    • but that's still a risk for the business! Most people just tend to use the card immediately.

      • That is true but mostly they buy another gift card which they going to use for another year …!

I need to purchase some this time as running out of fund for utilities payment

        • Well, unless the other gift card that the majority buy are Coles gift card, then the Coles group do not necessarily raise cash at 7.5% interest

        • If they sell a gift card for a different brand thats a sale and they have a cash. The new company holds the liability

      • +2

Not everyone will use these immediately. Some hold on to them to spend at their own pace.

        • +1

Those will be hacked in the meantime so Coles will pay out that money to the hackers

        • Hackers love these people

  • +1

Don’t suppose you can buy these with Flybuys Dollars?

    • +1

      Nope.

      • sigh

Doesn’t matter, I have a method in place to liquidate the points already

        • +1

          getting wine?
          .

          • +1

@Nugs: Actually, yes… in part… how the hell did you know that?

            • +1

              @linkindan: tell me the way

              • +1

@capslock janitor: Redeem points for flybuys dollars
Use flybuys dollars to buy wine and other things for friend
Get cash for purchases from friend
Use cash to buy discount prepaid/gift cards

                • @linkindan: Use flybuys dollars to buy grocery
Get cash for buying grocery to buy discount GCs

                  • @bcYield: That’s also a part of my plan, but much smaller.
My freezer has about two months worth of meals made up in it, plus meats and vege ready to make more.

Groceries are minimal on my list right now aha

      • +2

not 100% NO but Coles credit card users can redeem $10 off each time.

  • +2

For sure getting a bunch of these

  • +1

@WookieMonster what to do if staff refuses refund on a failed activation

    • +2

I would contact Coles Customer Care for help. (You can call them at 1800 061 562.) If you explain the failed activation, the Coles Customer Care rep will probably tell you that the store staff should have sorted it out, and they may even call the store for you and instruct store management they need to refund you (or do an exchange).

You could also call InComm (the gift card scheme owner) for help, but that will likely take a number of days (or weeks) to sort out. I was told by one InComm customer service representative that a failed activation is usually due to someone attempting to redeem funds from that gift card before it is sold, so my guess is that if you wanted help from InComm, InComm would choose to send you a replacement gift card via snail mail, rather than try to manually activate the gift card you purchased.

    • +3

Personally I don't leave the store and ask them to sort it out and talk to customer care/whoever if they have to.
Usually the manager on duty is able to sort it out themselves without needing to reach out to anyone. So if in store, insist on speaking to manager on duty.

      • are y'all activating upon purchase?

        • +1

Yes, check your receipt before leaving the cashier. Each card will have its own line in the receipt as approved/declined.

      • +1

I'm with you 'Mav' after this happened to me twice and staff sent me off with a phone number. I will now stick there until they locate staff with the experience to fix it on the spot.

    • +2

Don’t leave the store and ask for the manager, once you left the store, they will have million excuses not to process the refund for you!!!

  • woohoo, more fruitless hunting for GCs!

    • +1

One of the benefits of living in regional Australia aha

  • Time to get free money lol

  • Jeez, again!

  • +6

Unlike the last online Coles mc, at least this can be used in physical store

    • Now I'm glad I held off on that deal.

  • Great. Need more

  • +5

I have one of these cards that I bought 2 months ago, used it once about $45 on Amazon, but now I can't check the balance and use it online or in store. I've called them twice and they said it would work again after 24 hours, but after 2 weeks I still can't use it. I then emailed them and they asked me to contact Coles because I bought it in store. I went to Coles yesterday the lady asked to contact who issued the giftcard. Now I don't know what I should do.

    • +4

Lodge a complaint against Heritage Bank through AFCA.

    • +2

Yeh this is another issue I encountered. 90% of the time the balance checking website is down. Pretty crappy.

      • +1

I dont know, like whenever i have tried its always working, used the website more than 20 times recently, maybe i was lucky idk

      • Are you using Chrome? It always seems to error out with Chrome. Firefox and Edge always works though

        • I didn't know this, yes I've always used chrome.

Also I use mine up about half a year ago so maybe they have improved?

      • +3

Never had any issue checking the balance or using it at all. Works like a treat for me!

    • I had the same issues here, got the same response, and don’t know where to go .
      So much trouble these days!

      • Do not use it on a website that does not ask for CVV unless you'll clear the whole balance after it.

99.9% fraudulent transactions do not have CVV entered so that your legit transaction can be easily categorized into it.

  • NSW again. I thought NSW had it twice already this year?

    • +1

      Yes,this is the 3rd time i guess

    • Lot of cash and loaded folks in NSW ;)

  • i still haven't got my $250 back from almost half year ago, their support always say contact back office, but i rang over 3 times already still the same answer.
If your card stolen your money gone.

    • +2

That sounds like you have grounds to lodge a complaint against Heritage Bank through AFCA.

      • Same with me - did their claim process. Nothing. Sealed card was filled with Tic-Toc purchases
Lucky I screen-shotted because once the process began the card history cannot be seen
Got ripped off + bad service from Heritage. Will take it to the ombudsman if necessary

        • +1

          I got tictok transactions too.
I already got the email saying they will email me replacement card on 21 April but still have not got anything

    • Sorry what cashback is expected?
I got 10% off upfront. Were you gonna get cachback instead?

  • Thanks OP!

  • -1

Can I use normal Coles eGiftcards to buy these?

    • +3

      Not since April this year.

      • Coles is always stingy, that's why I much preferred Woolies

        • +4

Well Woolies clooed that loophole way before Coles did. Wouldn't Woolies be stingier?

          • @t25: Aldi never allows such loophole. Wouldn't aldi be the stingiest?

  • bummer not for QLD.

    • +3

      Qld the following week

      • @ce5himm Is this confirmed or speculation? Just dipping my toe into the gift cards.

        • +1

Well, happened last time. Wait for one more week and let's see how it goes

          • @ce5himm: Beauty thanks mate!

            • +1

@IslandBreeze: Sorry to disappoint you but QLD won't have this promotion next week.

              • @VantageXL: My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. Here's hoping for the week after.

              • @VantageXL: Any chance WA is targetted next week?

                • +1

@t25: As far as I can tell, there is no Mastercard gift card promotion in any state or territory next week.

                  • @VantageXL: Any thoughts on week after I mean week starting 28th June

                    • @Shad: I will let you know if I hear anything.

                    • +1

@Shad: Unfortunately, it looks like it will be 10% off Google Play gift cards (excl. variable load) nationwide from the 28th. No Coles Mastercards on special in any state or territory from what I can see.

                      • @VantageXL: That's unfortunate
                        Thanks for the update

  • +1

something wrong with coles cash flow?

Thought they are well ahead with the crazy profit…

  • +4

Maybe not worth the headache for such small discount, you be wasting more time than gaining of issues occur

  • +1

why cant woolies release their promo 4 days early!

    • It may be outdated but still implemented here, unless the picture taken in a store.

    • which promo

  • How do you use the remaining balances on these in a part payment? Will most places accept payment split across multiple cards?

    • +1

I don't see why it would be an issue. At Coles or Woolies you can elect to pay specific amounts via card. If you go to the cinemas I'm sure the cashier would be able to also split payments.
