  • Is this just a PC? What can I do with this apart from access what I assume to be some app store with the most rubbish console games ever? I am into retro gaming but anyone who's tried to play a 2600 in the last 20 years is deluding themselves if they are saying it's fun

    • From the ad:

      PC MODE

A true “hybrid” device, the Atari VCS is a uniquely versatile two-in-one machine for the many advanced PC hobbyists and DIY hardware enthusiasts in the Atari family.

Looks quite versatile, can anyone comment on how much and equivalent thin form factor PC would be and how much grunt this has compared to competing products e.g. Shield?

    • Played my 2600 a couple of months ago, after having numerous gaming consoles currently (NES, SNES, Megadrive, Gameboy Advance, 3DS XL, X360, and XSX), and yes it was still fun. Each to their own.

  • Didn't this get cancelled back in December? They don't manufacture it anymore

  • Much better devices to spend your $200 on for emulation.

    • For example?

      • A potato and a good imagination? But seriously, one of those beelink Nuc things would be infinitely better. Looks like they’re on sale for about $270.

Limited-time deal: Beelink U59 Pro N5105 Processor Business Mini PC, Intel 11th Gen 4 Cores, 8GB DDR4 500G SSD, 4K Dual HDMI Office PC Mini, Auto Power On/Wake On LAN, 2.4G/5G WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, Type-C https://amzn.asia/d/b8bEO8I

Your example is more expensive and has worse single core performance? Also, stylistically more boring…

          Not convinced it's 'infinitely better'.

All those refurbished Dells that get posted here.

        • I'd imagine the power usage is a bit higher. Also, not as nice sitting under a TV…

          • @wryun: Negligible. It's not running 24/7. You turn it off when you're done playing.

        • All the Dell refurbs I see here are Intel 6/7/8th Gen.

The Atari has Vega 3 graphics. With Intel you don't get to that level of graphical performance until 11th Gen desktop processors with UHD 730/750 graphics.

    • Considering a 20 year old oc could handle these roms it's fast enough

  • I would love to have one of these for nostalgia if nothing else and this seems like a great price. Thanks op

Clear it for 50 and I'll throw it in my pile. Maybe even 100.

    • Under $100 it falls into the “interesting device, can play around with it one Saturday afternoon” level.
To be entirely truthful, I am happy it is $200 because I rarely have empty Saturday afternoons!

Getting down to the price of equivalent systems with price/performance.
I guess if the styling appeals this could be a good offer.
There is no issue with emulating Atari on any system that has been powered up in the last decade, so thats not a consideration.

Maybe it would be a lounge room friendly streaming box if you liked he looks?

    • Pi zero can emulate far more that just Atari and it's 20 bucks

      • +1

I don’t disagree, and easier to set up as well, but the Atari is a reasonably capable Ryzen system with 4 or 8Gb of RAM:
        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_VCS_(2021_console)

So a fairer comparison would be a Pi 4.

At 195 it's not too bad a deal for a custom bit of hardware that can be used for all sorts of things, but the RRP is nuts, 195 should be the RRP and maybe 150 on a good day to compete with shields

  • Back to full price now

    • $550, eek!
