Regarding 7900 XTX vs 4080 it is strongly dependent on what games you wish to play https://youtu.be/dnxXT2sx8nA?t=724 so best for buyers to carefully check performance in whatever they will be playing
It is speculative whether 16GB vs 24GB will become a major issue during the useful life of these two cards (unlike the issue with 8GB GPUs which is a major problem going forward)
Also the price gap between these two cards has been as low as $40 (with the $1499 4080 during eBay Plus weekend) so not too massive a gap
I can't see 16GB being an issue for the immediate future, though if console games strongly utilise the SSD speeds and your PC doesn't have an SSD that is fast enough, the PC port may want to use up more RAM / VRAM to compensate.
The upcoming PC port of Ratchet and Clank rift apart will be interesting. Will an SSD be a mandatory requirement? RAM might be less of an issue for PCs, VRAM is hard to tell.
Series X and PC5 use shared memory so roughly 2GB is used for system so VRAM is roughly 14GB.
I think game devs still don't trust SSD in the same way as RAM. Virtual memory with the fastest SSD is still painful on PCs and Macs due to the latency. Short bursts might be okay.
@netsurfer: I read 13.5GB is available to games on both the main consoles, as 2.5GB is reserved for the OS on both systems. The 13.5GB is split between game logic, audio, and graphics, so if the game uses 3GB for the game logic, that leaves 10.5GB for audio and graphics. That is why I feel confident about 16GB VRAM on a GPU, as long as SSDs on the PC is fast enough and the game can use the SSD effectively.
I agree, the Ratchet and Clank port will be interesting, I'd like to know what kind of SSD and settings we actually need for 60fps+. Eurogamer tested a significantly slower PCIe drive (3200MB/s) on the PS5 with Rift Apart. It worked almost as good as the on board storage with load times of 7 seconds vs 10 seconds and only on occasion would it drop the fps by 1. Still even at 3200MB/s that would be faster than many peoples game storage and the PS5 has physical decompression technology while PCs do not, PCs will use the CPU or GPU to do it.
@FabMan: Thanks for the info on the console RAM breakdown. Eurogamer / DF's findings on that slow PCIe gen4 x4 (which performs more like gen3 x4) NVMe SSD are interesting.
Will Ratchet and Clank port support DirectStorage 1.1 (which does allow GPU hardware decompression)? Also, will SATA3 SSDs be sufficient? It is interesting Sony first party studio PC ports seem to be pushing / lifting minimum gaming requirements.
how exactly is this better then 4080
I have a 4080 and VRAM is already getting maxed out at 4K. But it depends on the game and lowing to 1440p is fine too.
I'd be pissed if I paid that much for a card for 4k gaming and had to lower it to 1440p just because of vram (just my view on things 🙂).
Although I don't think it'll be an issue for the 4080 for a long while… But a 4080S/Ti next year will likely have a bit more vram and possibly on a better mem bus.
@scud70: Im hopeful the 4080s will be better value than the 4080 is. The additional vram and mem bus would a nice boost if they can offer it at a similar price to the 4080.
Edit: hopeful, but still assuming NVIDIA will peg everyone for a few extra GB of vram@DeToxin: it'd mean they'd acknowledge the fact they were trying to fleece the customer but the smartest thing would be to drop the pricing tier's at the time of their launch (since most would already be out a year +) then slot the Supers/Ti's in those pricing slots … we'll have to see, but seeing those rumours i would say no 50x0 till about 2025 … which based on their Ai run is how they'd approach it…
Yeah forget rtx lol. If I had to pick between dlss3 and vram I'd pick vram. Bottlenecks take priority over gimmicks anyday.
if the performance is similar and price. i would still go nvidia for compatibility…. unless you solely play traditional games, doesnt use any other software. but i do get the Vram is very tempting here, perhaps thats the only advantage here.
"for compatibility"
Eh?
Compatibility? I think you mean the software features like DLSS and RT right?
This is 2slot (at least the backplate) and will fit in some fairly small cases, wheres the Nitro will most definitely not.
Good card.
Bought the XT for $100 less two months ago. Good price. Great card
HODL
Until $1337.
Until $1,226
Around USD894 ex-gst which is $100 below launch msrp, decent price for a top end gpu despite what the hoodlors on this site would have you think
Believe it or not, a lot of people wont spend over a thousand dollar on graphic card.
Nah 4090 should be this price. Especially if proof of work is no longer kicking. The only reason they became so expensive over the last decade was because of crypto. As a pure gaming card this 7900xtx should be $800-900 max. You used to get 2 gpu cores on one card for that.
Sure thing buddy, tell you what, you spam the same comment another ten thousand times on Whirlpool and on OzB and papa Jensen may just listen and release the 5090 at $500 just for you :)
Whaddaya say, based off your post history it should take you no time at all :)
Well if katkoin or whatever bullshit doesn't take off this year he'll be forced to release it for $500
Does anyone know if this comes with the free Resident Evil 4 promotion? Can't work out if you get the coupon for the game from AMD or if it has to be a participating retailer
Just get the game on the high seas

I looks like they will.
I have emailed them about the game promotion. I will let you know.
Legend. If they are offering RE4 it's dumb that they aren't advertising it properly. Literally determines if I purchase it or not. I'm going to buy RE4 anyway so I'm factoring it into the total price.
(Regarding this promotion, we have yet to receive the codes from AMD. I'll keep this ticket on hold and let you know when we have them.)
That's a yes :)
Wow, having a hard time thinking of a 4080 with this price (keeps dropping).
4080 is $1599 and comes with free Diablo 4, very similar price
RTX 4080 is heavily overpriced for a 1440p card. Some current games already allocate over 16GB running 4k, and that's without rtx.
Just bought this today 😁 , I had been on the side line for awhile now and a bit salty with nvidia. 4k gaming here we come:)
If only the Nitro+ would drop to this price, still much better than a 4080 if you game at 4k.
