    Seems… expensive 🧐

Come to see post about 8GB memory.

  • has intel/amd chip catchup with m2 on performance/battery-life yet ?

    • Performance, yes. Efficiency, no.

    • +1

AMD yes for both, just look up 7940. Intel unfortunately they need a high TDP due to an inferior manufacturing node.

      https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/5454vs5183/AMD-Ryzen-9-…

      7940HS scores 30k
      M2 Max scores 26k

Again if you are used to the Apple ecosystem get Mac. If you want great performance per watt get an AMD based Windows, or Linux OS laptop otherwise.

  • +$1 at HVN, outrage. lol

great way to use those apple gift card balances for further discounts

yeah i wouldn't recommend any mac with 8 gb only of ram these days minumum shoudl be 16gb ram.

    • +3

I think any M1 or newer Mac is fine with 8GB unless the user is multitasking and/or using demanding software. General browsing, office work, students etc 8GB is more than enough generally. Good to upgrade to 16GB if you think you might get into things that are more RAM demanding or multitask heaps and want to leave apps open and keep heaps of browser tabs open.

Plenty of tests and examples on YouTube. Would highly recommend watching Created Tech.

      • Yes, this is my understanding too. The M1/2 chips are so efficient on memory that the amounts that we're used to seeing on the old Intel chip Macs are no longer relevant. Some of the benchmark tests seem to be showing excellent results with less RAM than I would previously have been comfortable with.

I saw someone getting the "Your system has run out of application memory" from running Cal, Discord, Chrome, Messages, Music, Safari, Slack and Term. You can nitpick those apps but that's not really anything heavy.

        • Hard to say, because the elephants are Safari & Chrome. I've had that message on my 32GB RAM Intel Mac due to something funny on a website in Chrome. But your point is valid & it's possible that there's a real issue.

  • The 15 inch is out now, starts at A$2,199.00 though. But 15 inch is pretty baller. I'm thinking of getting the 16 inch M1 Max personally, if I can find it for under $3,500.

Yeah unless you really want a thin 15" with a longer battery life, there have been plenty of base M1 Pro 16" MacBook Pros on eBay with near new condition/ under 10-20 cycle counts for $2100 ish. Which I find is a way better buy for the ports it offers, mini led 16" 120hz ProMotion display, better speakers, and if irc M1 Pro base is still better than the M2 base?

      • Plenty? Care to share a link? could not find anything even close to 2100.

  • Is it better to get it from Officeworks with the Repair Plan for $169, or through the Apple AOC Education Store with Apple Care plus which is $269 or price match at JB Hifi with the JB extra care repair cover for $179?

    • how long all of the plan cover? make sure the repair plan cover for water damage and accident damage like screen …
Apple care plus cover water damage as well but u had to top up extra fee to repair.
If ow and JB can cover those damage i will go cheaper plan

    • you can also get apple care plus after purchase with 30 days. it was $100/yr for my 13 air

when is 16gb going to be the standard… ffs my phone has more ram than my macbook

I have a 8GB M1 macbook and I haven't had any problems - it is liiterally 300 dollars for 8GB more RAM. I know people say it is necessary for future-proofing but for the majority of mac users/the average users, I believe their mac won't be bottlenecked by the smaller RAM.

Same goes for people saying 64GB is not enough for the ipad - no unless you have a lot of photos (theres icloud storage) or have a lot of games. Apple overcharges for the extra storage (what I read from online sources)

  • Genuine question: Is this good for music production/playing roblux for youtube vlogging?

    • +1

      With the M2 chip? Absolutely!

      • Thanks

  • Has anyone tested their Dell G3223Q on this? A HDMI 2.0 port limits it to 2160p60.

  • Absolutely ridiculous that Apple get away with charging so much on essentially all of their laptops with only 8gb RAM it doesn't cost that much more to add another 8gb smh apple. Disappointing

    • Yep , and it ain't going to changed anytime soon…
