  • Was thinking of this or the other one I saw on Gumtree:

    • +1

      Different purposes
I don’t own a macro but it is a different niche

85mm is good for portrait photos and some street photos

This lens also has a minimal focus distance of 80cm, pretty standard but not ideal for macro. You would be able to get great close ups

  • Just want to say this is an excellent lens for those looking to add a prime to their Sony kit. It offers very good image quality and is very sharp in the centre. However it is not the sharpest or best 85mm anymore but for the price, you won't find a better alternative.

If you want a better 85mm, that would be the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN and obviously the even better Sony GM variant but these are expensive options.

    • will go nicely with the 50mm f/1.8.. now to wait for an affordable wide 24/35mm option

If you only care about sharpness and IQ then the Sigma 85mm DG DN is the way to go. The Sony GM variant is showing its age and doesn't hold up to the Sigma sharpness wise (they really need a MKII). However if you know that you only care about the rendering of the image, bokeh etc, or you need Sony specifc features (breathing comp) than you may want the GM.

Yeah I would go with Sigma 85mm DG DN if I didn't have the FE 85mm F1.8 already. It is just better overall.

        • This Sony 85 1.8 is gold, it's super light and as sharp as I ever possibly need wide open.

        • Around double the price as well

      • This one isnt bad. But it's pretty much for portraits only it's autofocus is pretty poor.iys better than the Sony 50mm 1.8.

  • Pros: Excellent price (in this post), good build quality, fast autofocus, very sharp wide open (smidgen behind ultra sharp Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8, sharper and no colour cast compared to Samyang 85mm f/1.4 AF)

Cons: Average bokeh (compared to other 85mms)

  • Samyang 75mm f1.8 is better than this lens in my opinion. cheaper, smaller, lighter, tiny bit wider. still has beautiful bokeh.

Dustin Abbott does a good review on it: https://dustinabbott.net/2020/05/samyang-af-75mm-f1-8-sony-f…

$506 Amazon AU via Amazon Germany: https://www.amazon.com.au/Samyang-Quiet-Accurate-Clear-Resol…

  • Tempted to upgrade my 85/1.8 to 1.4, but most reviews suggest it is not as sharp/fast.

Better bokeh, yes, as you would expect from a larger aperture, but it is also more than double the price and weight, and considerably larger in overall size.

But I really want to get the 1.4 to match my other 1.4 primes. Then I will probably offload the 24-105/f4.
