Inspired by Orrelljet's post, here is another Silicon Power XS70 SSD listed on Amazon Japan, cheaper than elsewhere.

The Silicon Power XS70 uses DRAM-based Phison E18 controller and Micron 176 layer TLC NANDs. Tom's Hardware has a review on the SSD.

Quote from @netsurfer

FYI: Multiple OZBers have reported the 2TB version they received has Innogrit IG5236 controller + YMTC 128L XTracking 2.0 NAND. Multiple users at Amazon USA also reported the same.

Please assume you will get Innogrit IG5236 controller + YMTC 128L XTracking 2.0 NAND version of 2TB when making your decision. The 4TB version doesn't appear to have such component swaps yet (based on feedback from Orrelljet). However, there is no guarantee so you need to decide the level of component lottery for the 4TB version.

Since the Amazon Japan listings on AU site is on and off intermittently, if you can't see the sold by Amazon Japan option, I'd suggest using mobile Amazon app or Amazon Japan storefront to look it up.

  • Yeah, but it’s Silicon Power…

    • Pretty sure they’re all made of silicon ;)

    • +1

I had a bad experience with this brand, I rather paid a little more for a well-known brand.

      • What happened? Was going to purchase for my ps5 but uncertain so any feeback would be great

        • +1

Some people have multiple failed Silicon Power SSDs. Though, quite a lot of them are cost effective models. Technically, judging SSDs by brand is not accurate, but Silicon Power's SSD reputation on OZB isn't great unfortunately.

For now, people feel Phison E18 and Crucial 176L TLC NAND chips are good components and it is in a price point that Silicon Power doesn't need to heavily reduce cost. Obviously, Silicon Power's SSD firmware upgrade app isn't as polished as Samsung or WD. Majority of PCIe gen 4 x4 flaghship SSDs are too new to judge their reliability in the long run.

You decide. If you have concerns or doubt, don't buy. The FOMO is strong on this one, but SSD price is trending down. I am regretting SSD purchases from early this year.

          • @netsurfer: It does worry me that SP has such a high failure rate in their lower tier SSDs. But FOMO was too strong…

            • +1

@SkyFinance: You already bought so just enjoy it.

I had a failed Samsung SSD (Samsung RMA did replace it with a better model), a failed Kingston SSD, a Sandisk (now own by WD) SSD which has quite a number of reallocated sectors but not enough to get a warranty replacement. It is generally model specific, rather than brand alone.

    • Keep trying on app..it finally showed for me

  • Looks like it's gone

It's still available on my cart, keep trying or come back later.

Got it.. Just randomly appeared. Cheers.

Anyone used this for their ps5 and can recommend it?

    • Yeah would also like to know this.

    • I've used the Sabrent drive that read at 3800mbs you'll be fine with this one

      • This might be a dumb question as I know nothing about these things, but can this be used as an external for a ps5 with an enclosure? Thinking of selling the ps5 for when the new one comes out so don't wanna mess with the internals

        • Effectively overkill for any USB-c enclosure and port (eg playstation). The port would end up bottlenecking. Really need thunderbolt for both the port and the enclosure to justify it as an external SSD, but for best performance these are really meant to be inside a desktop PC connected directly to the motherboard via a PCIe slot.

        • Super easy to install….don't think too much into it..watch a few YouTube ssd install for ps5 and go for it. Just remember to remove prior to selling or trade-in of console.

          • @PaKoRa: Haha i usually leave these things to my husband but he just cleaned out the ps4 and ended up with an extra screw so I don't really trust him anymore 😂 so if I get one of these, I can open it up and just put it in? No need to get any casing or anything else?

            • @MeesusEff: yeah easy peasy…..even Sony has instructions - its for the masses to do. no stress. one screw left ps4 is impressive .. :-)

        • It wouldn't be able to install PS5 games via a USB only internal drives, it only takes a couple mins to install/remove anyway.. restoring the PS5 would take longer !!

          • @solidussnake: Ah OK. I do have a normal wd 5tb that I used for the ps4. Can I connect the ps5 to that purely for game transfer? Thanks, I just got mine this week for the Harry potter game 😂

        • For an external enclosure with USB, they only go up to 1000 MB/s. So anything with PCIe 2.0 or 3.0 will be sufficient.

The only time when an enclosure will reach PCIe 4.0 speeds is if the enclosure uses Thunderbolt as its connector and protocol, but those enclosures cost about $250 without a drive! The computer you use it with also needs to have Thunderbolt (usually Intel CPU or Mac)

        • If you can use it with your PS5, use it. Watch some youTube videos, do watch ones which give you pointers on how to avoid scratching the inside of your PS5, though it probably wouldn't matter.

The PS5 Pro news is quite iffy and personally, I think it is a load of ….. misinformation. With VR for PS5 just landed and the new streaming toy coming, it will be quite silly for Sony to release PS5 Pro next year.

Quality of life is a big selling point of PS5. If you don't want to put it into your PS5 and doesn't have a spare PCIe gen 4 x4 slot on your PC, then this is really a FOMO (fear of missing out) purchase.

  • Purchased. Thanks OP 💪

  • I believe it’s OOS at the price now

    • +1

      It's still available, keep trying.

      • Yeah I am. It was showing Amazon Germany as the cheapest at over $300. Now it’s showing Amazon Japan again.

Still in stock. Use your mobile browser.

    • Yeah I am. Have to keep refreshing the page - it’ll appear eventually

  • Got one finally, thanks!

  • Time to upgrade my PS5 storage.

    • It's $185 now, for 1TB

      • It's still $100.11 from Amazon Japan, refresh the page.

        • Yes, you're right,
but to get to that .JP page,
I had to visit the direct link
          and the deals are 'intermittent'
          with low stock.

If anyone wondering about removing the heatsink, only the top part comes off according to this article: https://www.overclockers.com/silicon-power-x-power-xs70-ssd-… "We could not remove the bottom heatsink as Silicon Power uses a very strong tape adhesive and nearly damaged the drive in the process."

  • Quick question; does this come with any software (Like the Samsung) to transfer your existing OS onto this drive?

    • SP cooperates with NTI to provide Echo. Never used Echo before, the reviews seem rather average.

Most people probably just use Macrium Reflect FREE Edition

      • Nice, thanks mate.

  • If you have issues buying the 2TB due to stock issues, https://www.pcbyte.com.au/p/adata-xpg-s70-blade-m-2-2280-nvm… is also a good alternative

    • What would be a good heat sink to pair this with?

      • Pretty sure the supplied heatsink should be adequate… Haven't received mine yet

        • Wait… is there a heatsink already? Looking at the pictures it looks like a sticker that covers the entire length of the PCB. Or am I looking at this wrong?

    • That's a good alternative. Local stock. Some people might need one without heatsink.

  • Think I just bought the last 2tb one until they restock. Seems like you can still order, just gotta wait longer for it to arrive

  • +1

    $169.14 now!

    • If anyones inclined to you can probably get credit if you purchased within a wek or so.

For anyone wondering, i installed this on my ps5 the other night and moved about half a tb of games onto it. I played GT7, GOW Ragnarok, Ghostwire, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, Thymesia, Sackboy, Death Stranding and Spiderman Miles Morales all off the drive and they all ran well. I didnt notice any stuttering. The reported speed was 6584mbs.
