  • Please add that it's for educational use only. Good stuff though!

  • Is it education version with limited features? Or full version but available only to students

    • Complete features, Entitled to anyone that is in any educational environment, from students, teachers and asscociates.

      • +1

But -not- for use in the classroom (go figure)

And - when printing - a banner makes it clear that it's not for commercial use.

      • +5

Every drawing associated with an Education version is Watermarked and the Watermark is unremovable.

I accidently inserted a block from an external consultant into one of my working drawings I use all the time and it converted my drawing into an Education version. It did display a warning but I just hit OK.

I will not touch anything from EDU version now.

    • +1

Full featured Autocad from what I have used. But if you print the item, around the border it has an "educational use" watermark

  • +3

    Wouldn't say "all users"

    Eligibility Requirements:

To participate in the Autodesk Education Community, you must agree to and comply with the applicable Terms of Use and also satisfy the following eligibility requirements. You must be one of the following: (a) a faculty member; or (b) a student; or (c) an Autodesk Assistance Program participant.

A faculty member is an employee at a primary or secondary educational institution or any degree-granting or certificate-granting educational institution or any learning, teaching or training facilities and who upon request by Autodesk is able to provide proof of such status.

A student is an individual enrolled at a recognized degree-granting or certificate-granting educational institution for three (3) or more credit hours in a degree-granting or certificate granting education program or in a nine (9) month or longer certificate program, and upon request by Autodesk is able to provide proof of such enrollment.

An Autodesk Assistance Program participant is either a veteran or unemployed individual who has (a) previously worked in the architecture, engineering, design or manufacturing industries, has completed the online registration for the Autodesk Assistance Program, and upon request by Autodesk is able to provide proof of eligibility for that program.

  • I am currently a student, and I've also been downloading many of these titles for years through this program. I believe it began in 2009. However, the education software from Autodesk is not for "all users", it is really intended for students and faculty. There is a third category of person that can also access this software, which is a veteran or unemployed person. The site says: "You must be one of the following: (a) a faculty member; or (b) a student; or (c) an Autodesk Assistance Program participant." So if you are unemployed, you can also use it through the Autodesk Assistance Program.

That being said, there does not seem to be a strict system that checks that you are indeed a student at the school, college or university that you declare you are from. Technically, if you disregard this matter of terms of use and eligibility requirements, Autodesk might not know that your declaration is false, and then you would be allowed to download and use the software. By the way, the keys that they give you only last for three years, and the software clearly indicates that it's the student version at the top.

    • +3

What happens after 3 years? Stops working? nags? blows-up?

    • The third category of user - in the drop-down menu, used to declare your category - was Coach/Mentor or similar.

  • +2

    .

    • No Sketchbook mobile, only Sketchbook Pro and Sketchbook Designer for Max OSX or Windows.

    • To those that gave a negative vote to ccwwayne, do you consider the Visual Studio to be a bargain?

I thought they had a point about it not being a bargain, since that is its going value. It is to entince people to learn how to use their software, then when they need to purchase a software later for their profession they are already skilled/knowledgeable in their software. It is a win-win situation.

Visual Studio express is free to use non-commercially, its been free for years, here are some links:

      http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-ed…
      http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/11/en-us/downloads#exp…

  • And of course we get 1 person unhappy. How is free not a bargain…?

autodesk aint freeware google how much it costs to buy

I didn't say it was freeware, i was reply to Moots post, not this software…

  • Been using these for a couple of years now, although legitimately with a student email address. I know that 3ds max doesn't have a watermark when published, but I'm pretty sure Maya at least does. When I signed up though an educational email address was required. Did this change?

    • I think any email address is fine this time.

  • yeah free is free, thx for sharing!

  • +5

Yeah student version has been free as long as I can remember.
Big watermarks in Maya when you render anything.
Use Blender if you want full featured open source 3D rendering for free.

  • +2

Educational has always been free. And when you print there will be a couple of labels along the sides. Can easily delete them through Illustrator or a bit harder with photoshop.

    • If you save a .dwg file as a .dxf and open it with a commercial version the border will be gone when you print it.

  • +2

I got all excited thinking it was full versions! tisk.

This has been around for AAAAAGES.

The licence expires, but they release a new version each year anyway.. I've used max, maya and toxik/composite and it's no different to retail version. No watermark etc.

When Maya was by Alias it had a watermark. That was PLE.

    I hate that '200+' graphic

    • Then you'll hate the 999+ graphic as well :) (yes it does exist)

  • I seem to be a dumb ass, why does it say "Protected Content - The content you have requested requires you to login to the Autodesk Education Community." and "This site requires cookies to be turned on!"

I have cookies enabled. Doesn't seem to want to go to the register page. I've tried all sorts of methods. Anyone getting the same problem?

Nvm, i seem to have gotten around that by going through the resend activation email page

  • Wow exactly what I am after and did not realise it was available for free. Thank you.

  • Just a heads up to everyone downloading the student version who isn't a student: you may as well be pirating the full retail version and getting programs that don't have watermarks. I'm not condoning this, but either way, you are breaching their rights.

    • +2

The spirit of this is for non-commercial reason. If I want to try out their software and maybe do a bit of self teaching I dont see why that would be bad.

As long as I am not making money off this I think this is a fair-go

      • +2

That argument could apply to any form of software piracy - "if I'm not making a profit, it's ok". I don't agree with that viewpoint at all. However, the fact that these software developers charge us Aussies nearly 100% more than anyone else for the same programs, damn near justifies the breaching of their copyright.

  • i'm just hoping alot of OZBARGAINERs here were smart enough NOT to put australia as the country, lest they suddenly suspect a SURGE from down under and ban us all forever and ever and ever! :D

but otherwise = two , three thumbs up! :D

    thanks heaps

    • I'm pretty sure they log your IP address anyway — they would surely get millions of downloads from all over the world with every new release.
actually the AAP is technically not available to Australians, and until recently Aussies couldn't even download Autodesk's software directly from their .com.au website, either trial or student versions — the only way to get them was from the usa site or by registering your personal details with a local Autodesk reseller.

  • Lets say you want to model something like a bookcase. What tool should I use? It looks like there are some pretty powerful apps here, but I just want to do something simple (as a start).

    • I recommend you use Sketchbook or 3DS Max, possibly Inventor if your PC has enough grunt.
AutoCAD would also do the job, but has a steeper learning curve, as do most of the others here.

    • Unless you are doing it to learn a specific program from the list, I'd actually suggest the free version of google sketchup (http://sketchup.google.com/download/)
Free version does pretty much everything, fast to get started, lots of forums to learn on - and can upload the sketch of your house onto google maps/earth!
      good luck!
