10 Days in Melbourne Next Month (Docklands Area)

Hey OzB Community,

Travelling down to Melbourne next month and was wondering if there is anything noteworthy I should be aware of?

Currently looking for some cafe, restaurant and activity suggestions in and around the area?

Wanting to purchase x2 tickets to the Richmond vs St.Kilda AFL match which is being played at the MCG on June 17, I'm not a member of either club, what's the best way to go about getting tickets that are affordable and good seating?

Thank you in advance for your input community!

    Gimlet. That is all.

    • +5

      +1 for Gimlet. Amazing brasserie.

      Whilst I'm tacking onto the top post - and I'm not entirely sure what kind of food and drink you're into as you didn't specify - but here's a number of other places I can recommend. Most of the restaurants you should aim to book (even during the week):

      Food:
      * Embla (Modern Australian - CBD)
      * Supernormal (Asian Fusion - CBD)
      * Tipo 00 (Italian - CBD)
      * Osteria Ilaria (more contemporary Italian by the Tipo crew - CBD)
      * Figlia (Pizza by the Tipo crew - CBD)
      * Cookie (Thai - CBD)
      * City Wine Shop (CBD)
      * Marion Wine Bar (Fitzroy)
      * Napier Quarter (Fitzroy)

      Coffee. You really can't go too wrong in Melbourne, but here's a few that I recommend:
      * Bench Coffee Co (CBD)
      * Proud Mary (Collingwood)
      * Terror Twilight (Collingwood)
      * Seven Seeds (CBD)
      * Vacation Coffee (CBD)
      * Industry Beans (multiple)

      10 days is a long time in any one place, are you there for work or something? If you have some time to explore outside of the city, you should try get to Brae.

      All of the above is from the perspective of a foodie. If you're not into that, then you probably won't care much for this.

      • Thank you so much for the suggestions and even cuisine type/ location next to them!

        Down there for work and reuniting with some family who I've not seen since before Rona!

    Docklands itself is pretty grim. It's always been a "low vibe" place but it really hasn't recovered from lock downs. Your best action will be in the city-proper.

    • +8

      You reckon it was bustling before the lockdowns? IMO Docklands never took off, it's just bumbling along.

  • I could assist in the purchase of tickets if needed.
    As for food, the Uban Alley in the District Docklands isn’t bad. Hardware lane in the city is filled with good options.

  • +1

    You can pretty much go anywhere around the CBD easily (not just around Docklands) as it falls within the free tram zone (otherwise get a Myki card if you want to venture further).

    For cafe's there's so many good ones to choose from, but maybe some options to look at:
    - Hardware Societe
    - Higher Ground
    - The Grain Store

    Other Stuff:
    - Hosier Lane: Street art if you're into that sorta thing

    • +2

      Just to add, the free tram zone doesn’t extend to the mcg, but it’s not that far a walk from the edge of the free zone

      • This PDF will more than come in handy!

        Thank you so much!

      If OP has an Android phone with NFC, they can skip buying the myki card for $7 or whatever it is these days and use mobile myki.

      • +1

        I found NFC tickets so hopeless I gave up on using them after I once had to leave a bus after missing one stop trying to tap off and then giving up at the next.

        This happens to me on pretty much all readers (maybe works first time on roughly 60%). And there is apparently a trick to get cheaper travel on the Androids so it's a big deal for me to forego them.

        Is this a phone problem? Energy-saver problem? Or are myki NFC tickets just terrible?

        • +5

          Probably your phone. No issues with mine on a Pixel 6 Pro.

      • ooooh handy to know! I have an S21 Ultra, $7 saving is still a saving!

      • I had no Idea…

        Thanks!

  • Do you like goat dishes?

    • I love goat!

      • Are you the OP?

        • +5

          I am not. But I can access Docklands and love goat!

    A few suggestions for you:

    Cafes and restaurants

    • If you're in the Victoria Harbour area of Docklands, you could go to Cafe Bambino for a decent coffee and a reasonably priced lunch (they have a coffee and banh mi deal). It's next to a small park called Victoria Green, and is open 7 days a week. Great place to sit outside on a nice day.

    • For Thai food, Thai Thani on Collins St, Docklands is good, though like everywhere else prices have gone up a bit recently. They have a robot waiter, which is always entertaining to watch.

    • If you're close to The District side of Docklands, then Cargo Bar and Eatery is a good place to eat. Can sit outside by the water if it's nice weather, or indoors in the warm if it's cold outside. Open late

    • Near the branch of Woolworths at The District, you can get a good coffee at Shall We Coffee, and there's also a newish cafe called Daybreak Cafe, which is good for breakfast.

    • Also, there's a good food court at Collins Square on Collins St, Docklands. Good variety of food, open Monday to Friday during office hours.

    Activities

    • I recommend a walk starting from Webb Bridge and following the Yarra River, along Yarra Esplanade. Finish just under the Bolte Bridge, which is an impressive sight.

    • Another good walk is along Victoria Harbour Promenade. Especially around sunset, you get great views back across the city.

    • You could sign up for a kayaking tour. I've only done it in the summer so not sure what it'd be like in winter, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Leaves from Victoria Harbour, Docklands. See https://www.kayakmelbourne.com.au/tours/docklands-kayak-adve…

    • Or if you have a free day and want to explore further afield, you could take the Port Philip Ferry from Docklands across the bay to Portarlington. Great day out.
      See https://www.portphillipferries.com.au/

    • If you want to do some shopping, DFO South Wharf is good for clothing, just a short walk from Docklands, along the river. And there are lots of cafes and bars along the riverside there.

    • Can also catch the ferry to Geelong too; nice trip and lots of jellyfish to see (and maybe some seals)

  • +3

    You could have lunch with @jv ?

    • +2

      on Fridays, esp. if OP likes goat

      • +2

        I'll be there. Are you coming this time? I'm bringing the sacrificial goat this week.

        • +1

          No nannies this time…

        • I've not been invited as yet! So rude!

          I'm bringing the sacrificial goat this week.

          On the tram?

          Now I've got 'My Highland Goat' in my head so if y'all live in the Grampians then it's even funnier

      • I've spent quite a bit of time on Ozbargain but feels like I'm missing a reference here?

    • +4

      I went escooter riding with jv in Springvale. She crashed and swore never to ride them again. That's why she's so vocal in deals now.

      • +2

        jv should stick with the Segway ;)

  • In Vic, train travel within the state is capped at $9.20. However most train service will have some sort of disruption or other!

    • -1

      As opposed to travel by road which famously is never disrupted with consistent travel times throughout the day.

    I have never been to Melbourne - but have suggested this to my nephews who absolutely loved it. Location is 542 Sydney Rd, Brunswick VIC 3056

    From their website:

    Every size, shape, colour and design
    The tiny space has floor-to-ceiling shelves stocked with jeans. Inside you’ll compete to get a shot in one of the change rooms, and you’ll vie for the attention of one of the ever-busy staff members. Dejour isn’t the secret it once was.

    Dejour’s real drawcard is on-site alterations. At $65 a pair (including alteration) they can only be described as a steal, making it perfect for anyone who has ever spent $300 on brand-name jeans.

    Philippe’s 2 course or 3 course set lunch menu.

    Get a croissant from Lune. Be prepared to stand in line in the city or go early during a weekday to Fitzroy.

    I would recommend drive down great Ocean road and do a hike in the Otways national park somewhere near Lorne/Apollo Bay and have a picnic by a waterfall with nobody else around you have the whole forest to yourself most of the time. It's breathtaking.
    For food in Melbourne CBD try a lamb souvlaki from stalactites on Lonsdale St. Delicious!

  • Good suggestions even for me for someone that lives here

  • Thank you so much to the OzB Community for all the words of advice, recommendations and inspiration you've provided me!

    Keep em coming through!

    More specifically if anyone has any food recommendations of places that do SERIOUSLY LARGE meals? You know like food challenges, or Burritos the size of your forearm etc.

      • +1

        The Dimmies are still there but there are a lot of options available.
