  • Is this a good price for a coffee grinder?

    • -6

      I use this

    • Depends on your experience level. For me it's expensive

    • +4

      extremely

    • +2

For espresso, yes. (Hand grinders notwithstanding.)

For filter or Moka pot or something more forgiving, nah.

      • Which one for a moka pot would you recommend?

        • +3

My responses are going to be terribly predictable, a bit like saying "Buy a Camry if you want a car that works" but a reasonable hand grinder or a Breville Smart Grinder. The Breville will do everything well all the way up to, but just short of, espresso, and that is just fine. Ignore the coffee snobs when it comes to only drinking espresso. Filter, moka, and cold drip will have you covered for just about everything tasty. And in my opinion all of them are far better than a shitty, unrepeatable espresso.

I did try my best to 3d print and mod my way into making the Breville usable for repeatable espresso, but honestly it's hard work and I never got it dialed in for anything beyond the darkest roasts.

I have since moved on to a Niche grinder for my espresso needs, but still own the breville and the handgrinder, and still recommend both if all you want to do is make a coffee in the morning that tastes good rather than go down the rabbit hole of espresso.

          • @henno: I could never get my breville to grind fine enough and when it did it wasn’t repeatable.

Espresso is pretty easy tho once you have done it a few times and have a decent grinder.

@Dtezy: Exactly my point. You can't out-talent imperfect equipment.

              • +1

@henno: Also those single booker machines will prob drive people crazy with milk because of the temp surfing and all that sheet.

            • @Dtezy: Curious why do you need such a fine grind? When I set my breville to the finest grind the machine almost chokes.. and the pour drips at times, not sure if that's ok?

              • @johnnytran: Maybe it was just my one.

These days I like to pull ristretto , that requires it pretty fine - 20g/20s sort of.

          • @henno: Why do you still use the breville if you have a niche?

I upgraded from a breville to a Eureka mignon and now it never gets touched. I guess I could set it up for a courser grind and start getting into moka pots, but I think my partner would kill me if I had two grinders taking up bench space.

            • +1

@whapkaplit: Because it was already owned and there is nothing wrong with it even after 5 years of use prior to the Niche, so I tend to have it set up for my pour-over and lighter roast needs, which my partner doesn't enjoy.

I would be perfectly fine with just the Niche, but the lazy man in me enjoys not having to mess with the grind setting for our daily espresso once the batch of beans is dialed in.

        • Moka pot needs coffee ground more coarse than what an espresso machine would use.

Timemore C2 or C3 would be perfect, probably better and cheaper than the Breville one linked above

      no

    • +2

Yeah, this is a flat burr grinder. Comparing to a Breville Smart Grinder, this is like a BMW M3 compared to the Breville's BMW 325i.

    <insert hysterical laughter>

Great price for a great grinder. If I didn't have the original DF64 I would get this in a heartbeat

    • This! I'm already down the espresso rabbit hole with a Lagom P64 but if I didn't have that then this grinder with SSP MU burrs and a few 3d mods would be job done for 1/3rd the price.

  • Anyone know where this grinders are made/manufactured from please. Thank you!

    • I am guessing China for this price.

    • China just like Niche and Option-O

What's the comparison between Eureka Mignon Specialita and this one?

    • +1

Single dose vs hopper , I’d go this

      • +1

I don’t use hopper on my Mignon Specialita, you can get the single hopper part 3D printed or Eureka sell them too

    • +2

Specialita uses 55mm burr and I'm not aware of any other alternatives beside the one from Eureka

DF64 uses 64mm burr which is probably still the most popular burr size for home use so there are tons of options for upgrade (SSP, Gorilla etc)

this is the sole reason why this grinder is so popular btw, it is by far the cheapest 64mm flat burr grinder you can get

there are tons of open source 3d print and after market parts for both, like bellow, hopper, stand, portafilter holder etc so you can convert DF64 to a hopper grinder and Speialita to single dose grinder and vice versa

      • I have Specialita, I just wanted to know if this would be an upgrade. Mine is 2 years going strong.

I have tried to sell this to two of my friends 😂 if they buy we can swap for testing etc

        • with the standard burr for DF64, I don't think it will be much of an upgrade, with SSP burr it will be but that's an extra $300 or so

          • @j03w: I think you need a lot of skills to change a burr, so I would probably pass this deal :s

  • lol….weighing beans
