Agreed on RMs, even if they are a stereotype.

    Aerons.

Any good quality camping gear, especially if your life depends on it (e.g. sub zero gear). Western Mountaineering, RAB, Patagonia. TNF duffels.

Logitech MX Master or MX Anywhere mice.

    Good quality keyboards- Topre.

Disagree with the Peak Designs pack mention though- nicely made, great for travelling, but crappy comfort because they chose form over function for their shoulder straps. I've had one sitting around unused for three years because it just isn't as comfortable as my other packs.

Aeon Closed X are not even close to premium.

If you want premium you get Focal Utopia headphones. https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products/focal-utopia-v2-refe…

    • They're premium for the intents of the thread but updated to the HD800S.

Anything that you use a lot yourself is worth buying quality. I'll say high end shower heads like Methven or anything to do with bedding. Tyres, buy the best you can afford

    • +2

Bedding is a good one and it's often neglected considering we spend roughly a third of our lives asleep.

Agree on RMWs, I bought one air almost 10years ago still look brand new and had to replace the sole once.
Before converting, other brands would give 1-2years max where I was paying almost 2/3 of the price of my RWMs.

    1. Fresh coffee beans that suit your taste (dark for me)
    2. Quality musical instruments, such as guitars made out of cedar and rosewood.
    3. Quality kitchen knives such as Global
    4. iPad Pro with Apple Pencil 2

    Can't think of anything else.

Honestly I cant really think of anything where you need premium. Mid to low to mid range is pretty good for everything except for a few items where I would go mid to high, but never absolute premium. I guess it depends on what you count as premium eg is a $1000 dishwasher premium given that you can get a $500 one, but you can also get a $2000 one?

eg: wetsuits - if you use them you need a good one, but you dont need top of the line; next down is what you want. But definitely not the cheapest. No need to spend $700 but you probably should look at $300 - $500 rather than sub $200

Running shoes/hiking shoes - no substitute for quality in these. Of course you may not need everything that a top of the line shoe/boot has (eg carbon plate or super goretex), but you should get top quality of whatever you do need

As with almost everyone else, pretty much what I want as premium are the things I do for fun or hobbies. I dont need a quality musical instrument but that musician perhaps doesnt need a good wetsuit and will be happy with an Aldi suit for splashing around. I dont need RMW because I dont wear boots to work. Bedding perhaps but I get to sleep easily so I can and do sleep on an under $1000 mattress. Good knives for sure, but people have mentioned Global and that isnt premium at all, premium knives are $500+++. Global is solid mid range and its all most people need (or pick your own choice for a mid range knife brand)

My feeling is products should either be made to last multiple lifetimes, or made & remade occasionally with natural materials.

In terms of cookware, I have some pieces from Riess of Austria, & I think they are worth the money. Excellent quality enameled steel. But it needs to be handled & used carefully. I also like simple clay cookware, some from Japan or Europe. Clay & fire is an elemental way to cook. Probably the best.

I have some clothing pieces from Ibex, although not the current 3rd iteration of the company which was revived from bankruptcy, but from its previous 2nd incarnation. They made some pretty good merino wool products in a sizing/shape that fit me perfectly. There were plenty of other higher premium brands that charged thousands of dollars for clothing, but I couldn't ever see myself paying that kind of money. Norse Projects is another brand I like a lot.

Cookware should be good quality because it should last a lifetime and be a joy to use. I went through a number of Breville Food processors before I got my Magimix. I had a few Multicooker options before I got my InstantPot. I have Wusthof knives that are over 30 years old. I have a good selection of quality saucepans and a non stick wok which is really a sauté pan.

I get good quality shoes that are comfortable and wear well.

It depends of if you are talking about quality or “prestige”. I’m beyond worrying about trying to impress other people.

Premium is going to mean different things to different people. I would imagine it's more the quality rather than prestige. The answers so far would fall into the quality category.

I have to admit I have always had trouble finding shoes that either fit well, or were made to last. The closest I've gotten to a good fit for my relatively narrow feet are Brooks neutral runners in their standard d width.

What brands do you find wear well?

    • For casual shoes, I like Ecco. I also recently bought a pair of Allbirds which are a good fit for me and wear comfortably.

      • +1

+1 on Ecco. There are shops in the DFO stores. Also I go to Montfords and Peter Shephards because they have a big range of good shoes. Of course I only buy during the sales.
